So it would seem. I don't share that view, though (obviously). I enjoy musicals, and i love Moulin Rogue and Sweeney Todd, for example. Both of these films i felt had a far more interesting story to tell, better songs and better backdrops, sets and costume design etc.

La La Land was utterly forgettable for me. The instant the film finished i sat there with a feeling of having watched a film created solely for the purpose of showcasing the old days of Hollywood, and in the same time...BE about Hollywood. It's pure oscarbait. That's it. The characters were very generic, and i didn't feel the romance between Stone and Gosling were believable at all, and the general flow of this story was also lacking. I can appreciate the general plot/story concept, but i felt it was poorly executed. The ending was probably the only part i was somewhat happy with, since i'm a sucker for the more melancholic/depressing side of endings rather than the happy ones.
It's a date movie.
Did you see it with a date or an older person?
If nothing else the soundtrack was above average.

Arrival at No.1 ? I can agree with that. Would have been my favorite for Best Picture too but I can ultimately recognize that Moonlight is the more important movie and thus a worthy Best Picture winner.

Solid top movie. A little surprised Deadpool was only #10. I thought it would be higher here on GAF.

Of the top 10 the only one I was meh on and that I've seen is The VVitch.

I really need to see The Handmaiden, like right now if possible.

I can live with that top 10, even though i would shuffle that deck a bit. Lots of variety there which is always nice to see. Thank you OP and all those who voted.

Pretty solid list this time around... and, yeah, I knew Arrival had this won for a while although it swapped back and forth with La La Land for 1st place for the first couple of weeks votes were open.

Here's how GAF's list stacks up against my own rankings from last year...

1. Arrival - 6th
2. La La Land - 20th
3. Moonlight - 1st
4. Zootopia - 9th
5. The Witch - 34th
6. Manchester by the Sea - 33rd
7. The Nice Guys - 28th
8. The Handmaiden - 3rd
9. Captain America: Civil War - 93rd
9. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - 67th
11. Deadpool - 29th
12. 10 Cloverfield Lane - 64th
13. Hell or High Water - 14th
14. Green Room - 69th
15. Hacksaw Ridge - 21st
16. Hunt for the Wilderpeople - 4th
17. Moana - 41st
18. Silence - No Rating (I bailed when I found it insulting to my intelligence that all of these people spoke English for no reason)
19. The Lobster - 43rd
20. The Wailing - 31st

My own Top 10 that failed to crack GAF's Top 20 include...
2. Kubo and the Two Strings - 25th
5. Elle - 32nd (more people need to see this)
7. A Monster Calls - 57th (ditto)
8. Toni Erdmann - 28th
10. Paterson - 29th

At least they all cracked the Top 32 outside of my super sleeper choice in A Monster Calls.

I think it's kinda sad to see Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in the top 10. It tells me two things tho.

1. 2016 was a terrible year for movies.
2. The prequels lowered the standard for Star Wars films so much.

You're wrong about #1. You're absolutely right about #2.

To each his own, I guess. I saw over 70 movies released in 2016 and only two of them cracked 8 or higher while I had something like 15 films with 8 or higher in 2015. Same in 2014.
