Buy a 2nd Switch instead of another dock, joycons, and

Crazy idea here.

I am definitely buying another dock (I have two TV's where I game and want a dock for each). I also am definitely going to buy more joycons. Considering how pricey the accessories are, does it make sense to just buy another Switch for $300 instead of buying a separate dock and joycon (I also would get a non-charging joycon grip). A dock, joycon grip and set of joycons would run me $185. So I'd essentially get an extra main unit for $115 (which I could just have as a backup).

Thoughts?

It's kind of amusing that your plan doesn't sound all that crazy - it sounds downright reasonable, actually, helped in no small part by the insane price of all those accessories on their own.

I actually thought the same thing. But idk what I would do with the extra actual switch unit.

Problem is if I were to sell it, I'd have to charge not a ton because people would think the same thing. Once I get some Joy cons and a dock, well, I might as well buy one new.

Sure bro, just gift me the Switch and we can start a neverending cycle

Unless you really need a backup you're kinda throwing away $115.

Also your second grip would be the non charging kind.

Yep I'm probably going to buy a second one down the line for my GF instead of buying a bunch of controllers.

She can play mine in the meantime, though.

Thank you Sr. I was planning on buying extra joy cons and a joycon charger. pluses an extra dock down the road. this makes much more sense.

My wife and I are each getting a Switch, so thankfully I'll have 2 docks for the 2 TVs. But yeah, if she wasn't getting one, I'd definitely be getting a 2nd dock.

That said,I'm still buying an extra pair of Joy-cons. I want to leave mine in my Switch all the time, and just use another pair when I play docked.

You don't have to spend on a charge grip either, you just use one set and let the other one charge on the second switch.

I'd just stick with the second dock and extra Joycons. I don't need a second Switch.

I'd use the rest of that money on that sweet launch lineup!

Or just buy some 3DS games I've been needing to pick up for awhile.

I wonder if theres someone out there who would want to buy just the switch itself off you and just get joy cons seperatly if they are only planning on using it as a portable?

They would still need Joy Cons.

It's perfect for the one human being who wants to only play tabletop with a Pro Controller. They would only need the actual unit from the regular Switch SKU.

Not to be nosy, but why? Seems unnecessary and pointless.

Yesss! And then.... and then....everyone else will see the genius of this plan and start buying up more Switches so then all the switches will be gone and no one else will be able to buy them! HAHAHAHAHA!

You snooze you looooooze!

I can't get a frikin preorder...

I don't really understand the logic TBH. You want to buy another dock, so that means you should just go ahead and fork over the $ for joycons? No. Just keep your joycons with the unit and dock it on the other TV. Plus if you get another unit you're taking the memory card in and out and transferring between units? This is also assuming that the unit has an easy memory card insertion like the gamecard slot, which I don't think that stuff has been confirmed has it? I think it'll be more like 3DS. Seems like a hassle. You know there's almost no chance in hell they actually have a cross-play system too.

...why do you need a second dock, the system is portable?

1) Multiple TVs in the house where he likes to game (in the OP)

2) Not everyone likes playing games on a portable system

3) Moving the dock from TV to TV could wind up being a major pain in the ass depending on entertainment center plug setup

They would still need Joy Cons.

Did you.. not read the post you quoted? He says "If there's someone who just wants the tablet and will buy the JoyCons separately"

Yeah my fiancee and I did the same, the cost of the stuff separately is 200 bucks, so for 100 more you get the system again, so whatever.

Do we know how saves work? That would be my main worry.

The cartridges are read-only so saves will be stored to the system itself instead of the cartridge like 3DS games.

So unless OP loves swapping micro SD cards out and juggling saves around in storage getting a second Switch really isn't necessary.

They would still need Joy Cons.

The poster you replied explicitly said the person would buy the Joy Cons separately. So if they could pick up the unit for $120 off someone, add in the Joy Cons, that's $200 for a playable unit.

Not to be nosy, but why? Seems unnecessary and pointless.

It's just more convenient. I'm planning to do the same. When I want to go portable, I just pick up the unit and not worry about locking the Joy Cons in.

This is an alright plan, unless you want matching joy-cons for the neon SKU, in that case you'd still have to shell out cash for the extra joy-cons. I actually think the pricing for the joy-cons is fair considering what they are, even though I wish they were much less. The dock price is still ooof

I'd wait until they confirm they won't screw you on digital titles first, if you intend on actually using both switches, but otherwise , yeah, sounds good.

Now you're making me seriously consider not cancelling my backup preorder. Both games I've preordered so far rely heavily on multiplayer, so I could do with the extra Joy-Cons, and maybe I could just keep one Switch docked all the time and use the other one as a portable only. I'll probably cancel it anyway, though, since it's too much money to be spending at once for me.

After a price drop and depending on the game line up, I might get a second switch for my wife and we can have docks in seperate rooms. Kind of a cool bonus, really.

I'm moreso hoping for a "portable only" model though, since she loves her 3DS but almost never plays console games.

It's a console first and in this case, second as well.

What's stopping you from moving the dock to another tv? I move my playstation to another tv if I wanna play on that tv.
