NeoGAF Games of the Year 2016 Awards

Make the case how that bias worked in 2014 vs. the two media GOTY games. Maybe you can make a convincing argument for it how GAF is wrong for choosing Bayonetta 2 over Dragon Age Inquision and Shadow Of Mordor.

And if you can't then what the fuck is the point. Is it just to say bias a whole bunch to make yourself feel okay because your pet favorite game wasn't voted #1? Mine wasn't either this year nor last year and I'm fine.

Bayo 2 was an exclusive game. It falls into the "exclusivity carries weight" statement. I never said anyone was wrong.

Looking the top 10 2016 and 2015,I don't understand how someone think last year was weaker than 2015

  1. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
  2. Doom
  3. Overwatch
  4. Dark Souls III
  5. The Last Guardian
  6. Final Fantasy XV
  7. Titanfall 2
  8. The Witness
  9. Inside
  10. Hitman

  1. Bloodborne
  2. The Witcher III: Wild Hunt
  3. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
  4. Rocket League
  5. Life Is Strange
  6. Splatoon
  7. Fallout 4
  8. Undertale
  9. Until Dawn
  10. Super Mario Maker

What makes 2015 so good is the top 3,TOP 3 2015 beat TOP 3 2016 for me,masterpieces (my favorites 1° MGSV,2° the Witcher 3 and 3° Bloodborne,but all of them pretty close,I am replaying Bloodborne and loving even more,I did not played the DLC yet)
But looking all the others games,they are so weak compared to 2016,I mean I love Life is Strange,but I also love even more the Last Guardian.

Uncharted 4 is my GOTY, but i gotta admit it's a chore to get through in my second playthrough. The beginning is so poorly paced, it takes almost 2 hours till you get to a good shooting sequence.

Breakdown from a YouTube playthrough at medium difficulty:

5 mins of set piece gameplay
20 mins of platforming
2 mins of melee gameplay
13 mins of platforming
5 mins of puzzle
10 mins of platforming
2 mins of melee combat
3 mins of platforming
1 min of melee combat
4 mins of platforming
40 mins of cutscenes, platforming, walking around, playing Crash bandicoot

After all that, you finally get some third person shooting. It takes 1 hour and 45 mins till you get to the first shooting sequence. Thankfully there's (almost) no platforming in Last of Us, so Part II shouldn't suffer from the same issues. I think the problem is Naughty Dog overestimated how much people actually like platforming over shooting.

Congrats to the swell folks at Naughty Dog!

And to everyone who put Uncharted on their ballot, love y'all. Teamwork makes the dream work.

Bayo 2 was an exclusive game. It falls into the "exclusivity carries weight" statement. I never said anyone was wrong.
Basically it boils down to the disagreement of:

Exclusives are voted higher because they are exclusive.

Exclusives are voted higher because first-party sometimes make games aimed at enthusiast audiences that vote on GAF.

I think it's the latter. All I can say to that is that maybe other publishers should make games aimed at GAF if they want to win GAF's GOTY.

Arkham Knight got robbed, it's definitely a Top 10 game. It pissed me less than Metal Gear Solid V but both are 8-9/10 games.

Well, slap my ass and call me Susan. SFV got fighting game of the year on GAF. Never thought I'd see the day. Looks like it's not as doomed as we thought.

Uncharted 4 winning is disappointing. Shows how strong the Sony fanbase is here at neogaf. Don't think it deserves it over Overwatch or Doom, and imo not the type of gameplay we should be rewarding,especially considering it's a poorly paced run of the mill sequel. But a message board game of the year list is not really anything to get worked up about, so it is what it is.

UC4 won the most critic awards, reader's awards and NeoGAF's GOTY. Time to get worked up!

I've been here long enough to be accustomed to being way off the median, but that was truer this year than ever before, with the highest appearance by any game on my ballot at #16 (Stardew Valley).

An odd year, I think, in that the actual voting thread flourished with variety and colour without a clear picture of the favourites, but the final tally, at least at the top of the board, verged sharply back towards the predictable. One doesn't place highly in a contest like this without also being widely played, and the statistic that stands out to me is how closely the Widespread Appeal rank tracks the final point totals. Almost a perfect match, in fact, apart from a few rank swaps in tight clusters.

Not surprisingly, my affinity list strongly correlates with the few others who thought highly of Star Fox Zero:

Notably, woopWOOP (1), HylianHero12 (2) and Linkyn (7) all return from my affinity list from 2015, which is surely evidence of good taste on their part.

Thanks to the organizers for running this, as always.

1. [XB1][PS4] Inside (Adventure) = 14 points - played it, extremely polished game, I can see why people liked it, but it didn't work for me
2. [PS4] The Last Guardian (Adventure) = 11 points - played it, boring, I am also an horrible human being that doesn't really like animals so that's maybe why....
3. [XB1][PS4] Overwatch (FPS) = 10 points - played it for a week end or two, didn't grab me
4. [XB1][PS4][PC] The Witness (Puzzle) = 7 points, 1 honorable mention - played it, it's good
5. [XB1][PS4][PC] Battlefield 1 (FPS) = 7 points - already in the pile of shame

8. [IOS][AND] Pokémon Go (Simulation) = 4 points, 1 honorable mention - tried it and nope
9. [XB1][PS4][PC] Watch_Dogs 2 (Adventure) = 4 points - Still need to finish it, it's good but it was not good enough for a top 10 spot
10. [XB1][PS4] Firewatch (Adventure) = 3 points, 1 honorable mention - played it, it was ok
11. [XB1][PS4][PC] Stardew Valley (Simulation) = 3 points - I hate animal crossing and can barely stand harvest moon, so no?
12. [XB1][PS4][PC] Dishonored 2 (Adventure) = 2 points - pile of shame, I also need to finish the first one....
13. [PSV][PS4] Dragon Quest Builders (RPG) = 2 points - maybe I'll try that
14. [XB1][PS4][PC] Furi (Shooter) = 2 points - It's great, also one of the best soundtrack of the year

19. [PS4][PC] Overcooked (Puzzle) = 1 point - it seems ok
20. [XB1][PS4] Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 (Strategy) = 1 point - I didn't like the first one, so maybe not

26. [360][XB1][PS3][PS4][PC][IOS][AND] Batman: The Telltale Series (Adventure) = 0 points, 1 honorable mention - maybe

I guess I could comment on my recommended list too.

1. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (Adventure) Yeah well, don't have a PS4 and never will. I do own PS3 but never tried any of the Uncharted games, maybe I should. I might like them.
2. The Witness (Puzzle) Definitely interested even when I wasn't a huge fan of Braid. Mostly worried about getting frustrated too fast and relying too much on walkthrough.
3. Doom (FPS) I haven't been into shooters for a long time now, even Wolfenstein felt bit like a slog, even when I truly can acknowledge it being a great game. Doom is faster and more agressive though. So will pick it up at some point, possibly.
4. Overwatch (FPS) Well like I said about shooters. Also trying to avoid multiplayer games for now. I was too stuck on those for about 10 years, that I missed on many great games and still haven't catched up on my backlog. I was interested enough to play this in beta and free weekends. But won't pay a dime for it.
5. The Last Guardian (Adventure) Would actually love to play this, never played any of Ueda's games. But as stated earlier, I don't have a PS4.
6. Battlefield 1 (FPS) Another shooter with multiplayer focus, pass. Though I was bit interested in this at some point, my CPU couldn't handle the multiplayer.
7. Ratchet & Clank (Platform) Yeah no, I've played one of R&C games on PS3. I don't need any more of that.
8. Dark Souls III (RPG) Yeaaah, maybe. Would prefer trying out Bloodborne in all honesty, DS has always seem very unappealing with it's aesthetics. And these are not exactly the kind of RPG:s I want. Will start with DS1 and if I like it, then sure I'll play 3 too.
9. Tyranny (RPG) Been on my wishlist for some time now, ranks high too. So looking forward to it!
10. Titanfall 2 (FPS) The shooter I'm most interested in, for the singleplayer campaign mostly. If there were a Steam release, I would get it at some point I think.
11. Oxenfree (Adventure) Already own it, but haven't played yet.
12. Yakuza 5 (Action) With PC version I would have played this already, I do have unplugged PS3 laying around though.
13. Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII (Strategy) Who? This needs an investigation. Sounded like some kind of waifu game at first.
14. Stardew Valley (Simulation) Already have it, but haven't given it a proper go yet.
15. Final Fantasy XV (RPG) Pass. I mean, I liked the franchise until 9. But after that I've had zero interest for it.

Arkham Knight got robbed, it's definitely a Top 10 game. It pissed me less than Metal Gear Solid V but both are 8-9/10 games.

I have Arkham Knight here,I played a few hours and got bored by the goddamn it Batmobile(I never finished),ruined the game for me,I lent for a friend,he got bored and gave me back,but MGSV I played for more 250 hours in one month,I just stopped after the platinum trophy,my brother never played more than one hour of other MGS,I remember him saying "I will not play more than one hour",but he played until the platinum trophy too,more than 200 hours,the only MGS he really like.Different tastes.

I don't really get what this is (what do the numbers mean?) but these are my bro's I guess? :D
The higher the value the more aligned you are with their taste. (Same games on the list, same scores etc.)

In theory you could use this to look up their ballots and find a game (and reasoning) that you've missed for some reason. (Maybe misconception maybe unawareness.)

I think it's the latter too.

If anything, I think Bloodborne and Bayonetta 2 would have won by even larger margins had they been multiplatform.

I think you were #2 on my affinity list. Our Top 10s are almost identical. *fist bump*

I figured it was something along those lines, thanks! So I guess my numbers are quite high? Fairly in line. Was cool to see my name pop up in a bunch of other people's lists when searching through the data.

Seems like a lot of people from my list had Deus Ex so maybe I should give that the time of day at some point.

First off:

hbkP8Wi.gif

Some of yall some salty mofos.

Secondly: thanks to the Terrific Trio running this! So many games!

Thirdly: I think some of Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 2's votes ended up in its prequel's pile like this one, or this one, or this one.

Yes, it's THAT series with its wierd nomenclature again I'm afraid.

Fourth: holy balls I went hipster as fuck last year. Had a busy life for long stretches of last year and when I did play games, Rocket League and SF V was there for long stretches of time.

Mine -> GAFs

1 -> ??? (would be 74th if there was a rule change which is still my most hipster-ass placement for my #1 since I started voting)

2 -> 214

3 -> 49 (see above though)

4 -> 4

5 -> 149

6 -> 46

7 -> 382

8 -> 382

9 -> 382

10 -> 22

Lookit all this! lol

7. See 3
8. I'd watch a LP
9. Maybe.
10. I have the PS2 version which is almost eternally in my backlog it seems.

Yeah, Xanadu Next got shafted.

Eh, I picked it irreguardless of the officiality.

It was 2014. A new console cycle where all install bases were low and the games line up was weak on all other consoles.

Not my fault they couldn't get with The CRPG Rebirth and it's barrage of GOATs and just plain good titles.

Not a bad top 10 on the whole imo, can't say I agree with UC4 at all though at number 1 but meh

Big well done and thanks to the team for doing this again :)

EDIT: Oh damn i got quoted for Mankind Divided :O

Ayyy, hype. If you got a link to your list I'd love to see it.

I feel bad for anyone who got linked my trash ballot, I put no effort into it.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
So really, what is the ruling on how games got counted for platform awards?

For Xbox One:
1. Rocket League (Multiplatform, Windows/PS4/X1)
2. Stranger of Sword City (Multiplatform, 360/Windows/Vita/X1)
3. NHL 17 (Multiplatform, PS4/X1)
4. The Walking Dead: Michonne (Multiplatform, Windows/OS X/PS3/PS4/360/X1/iOS/Android)
5. Raiden V (X1 Exclusive)

PS Vita
1. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (Cross-gen, PS4/PSV)
2. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II (Cross-gen, PS3/PSV)
3. Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book (Cross-platform, PS3/PSV/PS4)
5. Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate (PSV Exclusive)

I don't see how a list with 4 multiplatform titles for X1 makes even the remotest sense without games like Forza or Gears.

Yeah I looked at the Vita list and thought Shiren was the only "exclusive" (even though it's a DS up port that wasn't localized). Zero Time Dilemma is also on the 3DS list which is weird. That whole exclusives post needs to be sorted really.

It's really funny seeing the surprised comments about U4 being number 1, it took most of the press GOTYs, most of the readers picks as well in various sites, but sure EVERYBODY are just Sony/ND fanboys, nothing to do with the game's quality or you having a different taste than others :|

Yeah pretty average year.

GOTY 2017 should be more interesting.

Hell I finished Gravity Rush 2 hours ago and I already think it's better than at least 9 games in my top 10.

You've kind of been a little grumpy about TLG for a while now, don't you think? You really think it "probably" sold less than Bayonetta 2? Is that a position you've thought about?

Lol seriously.

Persona 5 is going to win GOTY 2017 GAF bar a well received Zelda. Mario has no chance since I believe a more cinematic, story driven game is always favoured when done well. I also think Horizon won't be strong enough in such aspects to compete.

i think partly why p5 didn't top zelda in the anticipated list this year is because it was already out in japan. it's a small amount, but it could affect the final rankings this year. zelda has a worldwide launch and way more exposure going for it, plus it's starting to crowd persona 5's anime space a little.

horizon will do well - i assume the 4 or 5 slot. mario, zelda, p5, horizon, and mass effect will probably be the top five games unless there's a surprise like doom was this year, or one of those isn't that great (i'm looking at you, mass effect).

Bayonetta 2 barely broke 1,000 points when it won.

The Last fuckin' Guardian released the month of the voting, is super niche/artsy as hell, probably sold less than Bayonetta 2, and STILL got 1300+ points.

like it doesnt even matter what the metacritic on Horizon is, its 1500+ points is written is stone

Hell no and not even close.

I'm happy to see UC4 take the top spot - well deserved!

Yeah I'm surprised that some people are still complaining or outright hating on it.

Or ya know, it's actually a good game...

Also, comparing points instead of placement is stupid since a different amount of people vote every year. Also if exclusivity matters above metascore, why wasn't Knack a top 10 game?

Yeah i dont understand why people are upset. Its going to win by far the most GOTY votes critically this year and both casual and core gamers love the series. 2nd place wasnt even close to it.

Color me surprised at Doom being that high up. Wow.

Great year for games all around. Was rooting for Overwatch at #1 though!

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Uncharted 4 didn't even crack my top 10 but c'mon y'all need to relax on the Uncharted 4 hate.

Y'all need to understand that people voted it #1, it didn't get there by some default advantage. By shitting on it, you're shitting on others opinions whose Top 10 lists are just as valid as yours.

i'm surprised that there even is backlash towards uncharted 4 at this point. disliking uncharted 2 or merely thinking it was okay was considered the equivalent of trolling in 2010.

...and i think uncharted 4 is a good deal better than uncharted 2, which makes it even weirder. like, i think it fixes most of the problems i had with that game, and winds up being kinda good. as far as action-adventure games with strong bonds between main characters, creative world design, and storytelling that is best done in video games, the last guardian is the one i think gets it done. i don't think there's a lot of crossover between those two games though.
