What's the largest amount of time you've spent on a single short gaming achievement?

jetjevons

Bish loves my games!
So I finally grabbed star
242
in Super Mario Galaxy 2 after maybe 4 or 5 hours of continuous play dedicated to that ONE STAR. After about an hour or so in a voice in the back of my head was screaming that this just wasn't worth it but I stubbornly refused to give up. I felt like my gaming pride was on the line.

It made me think about some of the other ridiculous single achievement time sinks I've engaged in over the years (Goldeneye, beat The Facility level in less than 2:05, Mile High Club on Veteran in COD4:MW).

What's the longest amount of time you've spent on a single short gaming achievement? I'm not really talking about accumulative achievements (i.e. kill x thousand players in multiplayer) but more short, really difficult achievements that you have to replay over and over till you get it. Also did you think it was worth it afterwards?

Smile achievement in Geometry Wars 2 - Worth it cuz it's so rare and hard to get.

Wakka's Ultimate Weapon in FFX - Worth it cuz I enjoy Blitzball.

The damn Train summon in FF8 - Took forever (random battles for a dumb ingredient drop) but it's so f-ing powerful that it was worth it.

Combo Gold in Batman: AA - There was one Challenge map which was super hard cuz of the timer...had to retry alot.

Professional achievement in RE5 - I had to build up to getting Infinite weapons to get through it. That took a lot of time. I beat it solo btw.

Full Chaining Level 4 on Ikaruga (total playtime of maybe six minutes?) took me several months of training.

Totally worth it.

(Never did Level 5. Fuck that.)

Probably Mile High Club, but didn't take that long on Veteran, I would say about 25 attempts.

Still the only game to this day that I've got the full 1000/1000 on.

Oh fuck that achievement. I'm sure as hell not smiling while trying (and failing...a lot) to obtain it. :lol :lol

Trying to accumulate enough funds to get all the equipment in FFXIII for the Treasure Hunter/Platinum trophy. I'm too ashamed to say how much I played this game post game for the platinum
about 40 hours :(

oh yes, i understand. but it was super satisfying. :lol

Final Fantasy XIII's completed crystarium and all items trophy.

Complete crystarium took 2 days of my life and all items... 12 hours straight for 2 days.

Roughly 100 hours on the Wipeout HD platinum.
Bear in mind, it wasn't all spend on trying to get the trophy and I enjoyed every minute of the time spent.

I did the stupid kill 50,000 zombies thing in Dead Rising in one go. Pretty sure it caused my system to Red Ring like two days later.

Also, Insanity achievement in World of Warcraft.

Winning the first Blitzball game in FFX is the first thing that came to mind. You're really not expected to win it, but I refused to lose so kept at it at least 10 or 15 times. Think I even had to load an older save to get the Jecht Shot that I initially missed.

Was it worth it? I don't know. But Blitzball was probably the only sidequests/minigame in that game which I didn't completely despise, so it could have been worse I suppose.

Edit: Oh yeah, FFXIII's Platinum was also pretty time consuming, but I honestly didn't really mind, since I still loved the combat system in that game even 110+ hours later.

:O *bows*

Beat Zico for WipEout HD - You have to complete a track at a certain setting in under 1 minute and 30 something seconds... and it's not easy at all.
~1:30 x 100+ tries = over 2 hours of the same 1:30 minute race!

Do I think it was worth it? Yes, I do. I'm one step closer to my coveted WipEout HD Platinum, now! :D (just one big one left - I'm just too lazy to do it right now)

StarCraft II

ItÂ’s So Easy
Prevent the Protoss from capping a Tal’darim Altar in the “Welcome to the Jungle” mission on Hard difficulty.

As you can tell, the name of the achievement is rather ironic. Took me about 2 hours, abusing saves.

I spent a lot tries on Mile High Club, but never got it. Pretty much said "fuck it".

- Collecting shards in Infamous. On my first playtrough, I failed at this. I missed some and couldn't find them (without any help). On my second playtrough, I printed a map of these and done it sector by sector. Worth that trophy? Probably not, but I wouldn't stand that 96% or so.

- Killzone 2 on hardest difficulty. Finally beating
Radec
after a couple of hours was insanely rewarding.

- The Boss achievement in MGS4 :)

And this! I did it this year, finally :P I suck at Wipeout :\ Still haven't completed the campaign on elite...

COD4- Mile High club on veteran
GTA IV - Shooting all pigeons
Gears 2- Reaching level 100 (still trying to get Seriously 2.0)

Finding a Pure Bladestone in Demon's Souls took me somewhere between two and three podcasts. I also needed about six months (with very long breaks between each session) to get the Late Boomer trophy in Super Stardust HD.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm at a disadvantaged with d-pad steering. Therefor I won't bother anymore.

Longest? Veteran in COD2 and COD4.

This. What a fucking nightmare.

I almost tried bringing the gnome with me in HL2 on the PS3 version (yes, no trophies). Then I realized how fucking stupid that was, and shot him into an inaccessible area with my gravity gun.

:lol I'd have probably tried that too if I liked BlitzBall even a tiny amount.

On the subject of Final Fantasy, I spent hours collecting the full set of 1/35th statues in FFVII and then taking them all around the world with me to see if they did anything. They didn't.

There was an achievement in WSC2007 where you had to get to the top 16 in pool. I hated playing pool, HATED it. I spent I-don't-know-how-many hours getting it though, 'cause it was the last one I needed. I wouldn't be surprised if it was in excess of 25. 35. 40.

20 hours sounds like a reasonable estimate of how long it took to clear all the pegs in all the levels of Peggle Deluxe.

And then, back so many years ago, in Formula One ('95) on PSone I drove in excess of 3,000 laps of Monaco trying to shave thousands of seconds off my laptime. I can't even remember what my best time was, now. Arse.

I was determined as hell to get the Commander in Chief rank in KZ2, I'm now trying to get double the CIC rank at 200k points. I'm only 9k away and my disc broke :(

For reference I'm 625 hours into retail build. Don't know how many hours I've dedicated specifically to getting the ranks rather than just general play. ~40 hours maybe? Bit more probably.

BBE on MGS4, took me a few days and countless saves.
i still consider deleting a few for HDD space on my launch PS3, but am certain they'll patch in trophies or some shit that needs them like the next day:lol

Sapoteur in TF2, I grinded a bit on a CTF map with a load of turtling engineers.
It was fun wrecking their shit but I'd have much rather played dustbowl or something.

I think the achivement was 1000 succesful saps, I probably grinded about 300 on this instant respawn server.

Crackdown - Free Runner
Geometry Wars - Wax Off

Spend quite some time in both of these, fun times with the Free Runner but I can't say the same about Wax Off..still haven't touched Geo 2 since I unlocked this freakin' achievement. :lol

Vidmaster Challenge: Annual

rBnfpVEQx.jpg

0 gamerscore and fun as hell, it took us almost two hours :D

(EDIT) First time we tried it we played online and our connection broke. Cue rage. Second time (the time when the photo was taken) we played locally.

Trying to get the Z Saber on Dead Rising.
It took like 8 hours, if I remember correctly.
As I was about to finish, the game crashed. I wasted a whole day on that ;_;

I don't wanna be that guy, but I've heard to have Vidmaster achievements count towards Recon you have to be online when earning them instead of offline LAN?

Ikaruga
rlz59z.jpg

Good grade (20G)
Complete Chapter 1 in any mode with a grade of A or better

I don't remember how long it took me but so much fun doing it.

Halo 3 multiplayer achievements took me a lot of time too.

CoD3 General Achievement.
Receive 40000 total points in ranked matches. (Multiplayer)

I'm one of the few who actually enjoyed the classes introduced in 3.

I had one bronze trophy left in UT3, which took me approximately 200 hours.

I spent a lot of time going for the weekly ranking in KZ2 and all of the Halo 3 multiplayer achievements.

I was a title hunter in Final Fantasy 11. I actually quit the game over getting frustrated at the one particular object of my obsession. The monster in question is Taisaijin, and the only way to spawn this guy is to leave his placeholder monster alone and alive for 71-74 hours. The problem was that he was put in a noobish zone. So you would have random people running through killing the placeholders, and god help you if someone else was trying to make this guy spawn. After spending 4-8 hours each day for a good month, I gave up on the game for about 6-7 months. I returned to the game...and to discourage any other campers I killed the placeholders every day for a week. After that I was ready to camp again. At the time, my linkshell did 2 dynamis runs a week, so otw to Dynamis-Beaucidine...I checked...and there he was.

So in total...8 months just to get the title "Bye Bye Taisai"

Demon's Souls. On top of the time collecting stones in general, getting that pure bladestone took me about 10hrs of farming.

I spent 4 hours straight and about 500 tries on the final challenge room in Bionic Commando Rearmed ( the dreaded challenge room 56 ). My primal scream when I completed it probably woke my neighbours :lol

Most likely the first Outrun Time Attack one, to get a time of 4:30. Took like 4 or 5 hours for me to do it :lol
