iOS Gaming December 2016 | It's app-me, Mario

Actually, and surprisingly, I'm liking Super Mario Run much more than I thought.
It's like a cuter and slower version of Lost Socks (which is high in my GOTY list), but there are many tricks to be discovered and certainly it's not less difficult if you want to grab the colored coins.
I can see myself going down into the rabbit hole if, as I assume, once I add friends I'll see their records in each level.

I thought not, but after half an hour I'm already tempted to unlock everything.

Mario is really nice on the retina displays.
Now...I REALLY can't wait for Fire Emblem or, let me dream, a Zelda.

Super Mario Run is insanely good.

I got all pink coins on stage 1 and is 2nd on my friend ranking list, and it makes me really wanna go for the top place. And now there's purple coins to collect, and after that black coins. And they are placed differently. It's nice you can go multiple routes, but you can also choose to go route one, and then jump back and take route 2. And timing is everything in this game. It's not just jumping over goons automatically, it's also about doing tricks to earn toads etc.

Very impressive.

Guys, post your friend codes.

ADD ME on Super Mario Run!

I like it so far. It's not Lost Socks good IMO, but still a great start for Nintendo. I'll pay the $10 just to even encourage them to develop more games and keep them more or less "premium".

It's fun but hate the online thing. Connection dropped from 4g to 3G and it gave me an error.
lol non retina launch image on iPad Air 2. Nintendo pls.

Doesn't bode well though:

I've been playing this for 3-4 hours now. It's a lot better than Fifa mobile, but it has massive issues. Obviously it's missing licences, the menu interface is an incredible mess and it's slow because it's connecting to the servers all the time. There's only 1 mode FUT-like mode.

The controls are the biggest issue though, there are only swipe controls, no touch controls. And the controls are not responsive at all, when you want to play a through-ball there's 2-3 seconds input delay, so when your player finally wants to play the ball you already lost it. Most commands are done by swipes or flicks, it's not accurate enough. Then the defensive heading and sliding tackles are under the same button, that really doesn't work when you have to defend cornerkicks.

Finished first 3 free levels and i am failing to understand what is so special about this game, i don't get all the hype.

It's not bad but it's not anything new and fresh. There are only few levels in the game and i think that it's not worth more than 4 or 5$.

I prefer Rayman mobile games.

They're different kinds of runners. Rayman is about speed and flowing through the levels smoothly. This is more technical, with different contextual jumps and a focus on timing leaps and falling. I'm the opposite; beforehand I didn't see anything special, but having played, I can see the talent and craft in the level design and movement. It's very well designed.

Super Mario Run definitely has that Nintendo polish. Great game. Definitely worth the $$$

I really didn't like the Rayman auto runner games because they felt too on rails but SMR plays really great - it feels technical and polished and the levels themselves designed in such way you want to reply them again - the mastery is where the fun will be I presume. The gameplay is excellent however and I want more Nintendo franchises on my iPhone. Fully fledged Animal crossing would be amazing.

Then again I will leave the purchase until I get the apple gift card for xmas because 1) I just spent 20 quid on vsco x subscription (wtf)
2) I feel like tenner despite this level of polish feels like a little too much for amount of levels included - it loooks like you could beat the game faster than 1 world in NSMB on DS

It's almost got a parkour type feel in the way you need to do your jumps and moves correctly. Has a different feel in that regard in comparison to Rayman or Lost Socks.

Still think overall Lost Socks is a much better game than this, which is why it's #2 on my GoTY list and this may just fall in an honorable mention.

It's good and actually considerably better than I had expected based on preview video. I do feel overall that it probably still is "overhyped" when you have knowledge of what mobile platformers/auto runners are capable of.

I paid for it and will enjoy it. Just not what I would call an iOS classic by any means and certainly not a Nintendo classic. A good starting point though.

Downloaded Rayman Fiesta Run again to compare both games. The first thing to stand out are the controls: I hate when platformers don't give me control over the jumping. Let me control how high dammit. Criticize Nintendo all you want, but if there's one thing they get just right in their games is the controls. No platformer in the world feels as good to jump as Mario.

Rayman also feels a lot more on rails. You don't have nearly as much control as in Mario, even though Rayman actually has more than one button. Rayman is more about memorization than execution. With Mario, even if you know perfectly well the path you are taking, it will take a lot more finesse to nail the platforming.

Rayman does look a hell of a lot better though, that's for sure.

Mario gets MUCH better after you unlock the next levels, and it actually gets tough pretty quickly. 2-2 caught me completely off guard. It's a great game, totally happy I paid the $10. It's pretty clear that the game will be receiving updates with new areas, as well.

Add me if you like, I'll be adding everyone here: 1516-1375-7627 (my name is Eirikur)

Toad Rally is also a blast!

This game is about high score. Refining and perfecting your run to maximize your coin totals is the real game here. Wall jumping, vault jumping and mastering other techniques is mandatory for maximizing scores. If you are just playing the levels, beating them and saying "I beat the game" you are doing it wrong.

I like the fact everyone finds something different in games.

I too love Lost Socks and never really liked Rayman, they are both runners but the flow is totally different.

Mario is much more similar to Lost Socks imho, and that's why I'm loving it so much.

I generally don't like replaying the same levels...but I loved the hell out of it in Lost Socks and damn, it's almost even better in Mario in that regard.
The special coins idea is brilliant, and when you complete a set the level slightly changes too, so it feels fresh.

So far I'm having a blast, and it's not even my fav genre.
Level design is sooooo tight, glorious.

It's definitely got the replay value like Lost Socks. And I am definitely loving it.

Just the whole through the roof production values, animation, weapon variation, power ups and insane, branching level design will make Lost Socks very difficult to beat for me. It's also got a ton of content and lengthy levels.

They are much different games when taken as a whole with combat, etc. in Lost Socks. That game was also incredibly difficult at times even to finish a level let alone get everything in it.

But anyway, didn't want to belittle what Nintendo has done here. It's a quality game. Just hard to top Lost Socks for me at least.

Went through all the worlds in Mario, now trying to get the toads I need to unlock the houses and whatnot. You can pull the map a little and it shows more land, so I'm curious if there's more land to build on.

Also, I agree about the black coins. Those are tough and might require specific characters for specific stages, maybe? But it's fun, that's what matters.

I need me some Animal Crossing right now.

At least we won't have to wait more than 3 months for that one.

I'm really hoping AC is a buy-once thing and it's done. If they fill it with IAP furniture and stuff, I'm in trouble.

I didn't play all Mario levels yet but I think that levels in Lost Socks are much longer.

Actually I think that playing Mario which has behind Nintendo and some of the finest minds in gaming....makes Lost Socks even more GLORIOUS.
It really has nothing to envy regarding polish, level tightness and overall fun.

Super Mario Run is pretty great. The Nintendo polish and presentation along with game modes like Toad Rally and the black coins makes it worth the money for me.

I think that describes why Mario Run isn't clicking with me. I enjoy runners where the main goal is finishing the level. Where side goals just add to the fun. But with Mario Run the focus seems to be on repetition to get those colored coins. Eh, we'll see but it just doesn't grab my attention right now.

Why? Why not a premium game? Or am I missing some sarcasm here?

No, it's not sarcasm.

I mean, premium would be the best for sure, but I wouldn't mind having the option to pay for in-game items or tickets or what have you. I wish I could buy Toad Rally tickets in Super Mario Run already.

Reading some of the professional reviews of Super Mario Run is making me bit annoyed. Most talk about the limited on tap controls as if Nintendo was hamstrung on mobile.

Nintendo made the design decision but it certainly wasn't the only route that could have gone. There are plenty of awesome platformers on mobile with very good and accurate touch controls.

I do wonder in the back of my mind if Nintendo intentionally held back on trying to make it a full platformer to keep the "classics" on its own devices. Maybe not, but just know they could have made a traditional platformer with good controls.

Mobile isn't or shouldn't be an excuse not to.

It's a very good game -- more than some gaming sites give it credit for -- but to talk it down as if "well they had to make it fit mobile" is not accurate IMO. If that truly is the way Nintendo thought, then they didn't do their research well.

Okay, I think I might have misjudged Lost Socks. Because to me it looked ugly, so I never actually started up the game besides owning it. But this gif here, makes it look stunning:

Shaun's review for SMR is up - http://toucharcade.com/2016/12/16/super-mario-run-review/ 3.5/5

Super Mario Run is a decent game. It accomplishes the fairly difficult goal of feeling like a proper Mario game while also bowing to some of the trends of mobile gaming. But with the likes of Rayman Fiesta Run [$2.99], Wind-Up Knight 2 [Free], Punch Quest [Free], and countless others competing at a high level in this genre, decent isn't really good enough. A grindy town-builder isn't exciting enough. A couple of hours of fun with only coin-hunting to keep you busy isn't substantial enough. If you want Mario on your iPhone, Super Mario Run does its best to approximate the trappings. On the other hand, if you're looking for a top-shelf auto-runner to play, it's-a not him.

I should ask him to start posting here.

If it's an option, then there are ways to make it useful. I played New Leaf for months, trying to get a Modern furniture set, and I only ever saw two items from it. So if the options were "grind these out normally in hopes they appear" and "you can just buy it too, but it isn't exclusively behind a paywall" then I think that's probably ok.
