Just to check, Dimps (who did Sonic 4 and Generations 3DS) have absolutely nothing to do with this, right?

If so, I can get excited.

Just watched the trailer agin, something looks off when sonic goes through the loops I can't put my finger on it.Also, what's up with the music, why no FM synth?

I thought the same about the loop. It's cos in the original he didn't rotate as smoothly. Now it's really smooth. No biggie though

Ok looking at that footage for Studiopolis Zone I'm as excited as I've been for a Sonic game in a long long time. The physics look good and it has classic Sonic style platforming with fun stage gimmicks and pinball type stuff. It isn't just Dimps style rush rush gotta go fast.

Love that the hidden giant rings are going to be back too as that means we should have stages designed for exploration like in S3&K.

But how do you reconcile Shenmue 3 is PS4/PC? only so far

Shenmue was THE game meant to highlight the epitome of Dreamcast.

Good point. I dunno, I just rolled with it. If PS4 is the console home of Shenmue, then so be it.

And actually Virtua Fighter went to PS2 long, long ago. While several Sega releases were Xbox only (the stupid Dreamcast Collection comes to mind). Or Nintendo, for that matter.

It's not a science. You can't get all Sega games on one console. I just like to keep my collection consistent.

I was at a fiends house recently and he had the whole Silent Hill series... but with no logic to what platform. PS1, then Xbox, then PS2, then Xbox, then PS3. I did nerd frown! lol

I entirely respect people who don't have neuroses like mine, make no mistake!

It's coming to PC though. Maybe I'm wrong but it doesn't look like you'll need too powerful a computer to run this.

True, but that's a different neurosis I have. I don't buy console lineage games on PC. #Crazy

Fantastic. Definitely the best thing out of that mess.

Sonic Team nor DIMPS are developing this. Isn't it great?

Sonic Team I wouldn't mind if they were, I quite enjoyed the Classic levels in the good version of generations. Classic Sky Sanctuary was amazing.

No Dimps is the megaton though. After Gens I was hoping Sega would continue with modern style on consoles and classic style on handhelds, but the obvious monkey's paw curse would be it would end up with Dimps. This looks like best of both worlds (though until we see game play I am ignoring project 2017)

Lets hope Sonic Team has a minimum impact in the development. They are shit so i'm looking forward to what the new devs can do.

As long as there is NO voice acting and the physics are good, the game will have potential being a worthy 2D Sonic game.

Let's look at the new badniks introduced in Studiopolis. The badniks are all appropriately themed for this movie/tv studio level.

AcrobaticImmenseBalloonfish-size_restricted.gif

Microphone badniks that hang from bumpers. They drop down and swing back and forth. They emit and electrical charge from time to time.

BlissfulAggravatingBangeltiger-size_restricted.gif

A new take on the classic orbinaut. This time the badnik is surrounded by 3 lights that turn on and spin around so fast that they appear to be a solid ring of light. The lights can be destroyed individually when not on.

UncommonNiceAnura-size_restricted.gif

I'll call this guy Shutterbug. An insect/camera hybrid that flies around trying to take pictures of Sonic.

GrossUncommonAcaciarat-size_restricted.gif

A snail/reel of film that crawls up and down walls shooting out squares of film that slowly float down. The film hurts Sonic if he touches it.

'Dat Nintendo snub. I wonder how Nintendo feels, knowing that they worked out an exclusive three game deal and got Sonic Lost World, Sonic Boom, and a Mario & Sonic game (which to be fair was clearly at high risk of going multi-plat).

But seriously though, this looks pretty good. I've been on a Sonic kick lately, so I'll probably buy it on PS4 when it comes out.

I mean, Wii U is dead, so it's clear why it isn't on there and NX is in a weird spot. I'm sure they do not have access to devkits and, since it's a small team, it might be asking too much. After all, XO, PS4, and PC are all very "PC-like" platforms while NX stands to be something different.

That said, I still think we'll see a port down the road or even right away (it might launch with NX even). It could go either way!

Dimps made some good Sonic games too.

Not recently. Sonic Advance was by them, and almost good enough to stand with the original trilogy, but that was a long time ago. Rush (and maybe Rush Adv) was good too, but that's still several years ago and isn't a classic style game. 4 and Gens 3DS make it very clear the current Dimps team do not know how to make a classic style sonic game.

But enough doom and gloom about the people NOT making this game.

Edit: Looking at the offscreen footage, wow these levels look kind of huge. Always a good sign.

Looks absolutely wonderful. Lovely of Sega to let Whitehead and Co take charge on this - and it seems to be paying off already.

Apparently there will be a boss after every Act ala Sonic 3&K.

Why we talking of Nintendo snubs when Nintendo has enjoyed at least 8 exclusive Sonic games over the years?

Because Nintendo specifically paid for 3 sonic games that turned out OK at best, then they appear to not be getting what might be the best 2d sonic since 3 & knuckles, while everyone else is.

I have to imagine the pool of people who wouldn't trade boom, lost world and a olympics game for this is small.

So, this is a remake with new levels?

"Re-imagined Classics" "New Zones"

Need to know if it is a remake or not lol

So far we have a Green Hill Zone with the old graphics but a completely new layout and boss, as well as a brand new Studiopolis Zone.

Not a remake, but a new game with a few old locales thrown in.

The reason why NX isn't getting this is obvious if you think about it. Basically, Project Sonic is a game which can be canceled if NX flops, while this can't. Sega is taking a wait-and-see approach with NX, and I won't be shocked if the NX version of Project Sonic gets delayed beyond the other versions since they may not start work on it proper until they feel it'll sell well enough. It's a dumb decision though, since the cost of porting Mania can't be that high and they're leaving money on the table by not putting it on NX and Wii U.

So watching that footage, it looks like we're getting sonic 3/&k style secret giant rings for the special zones:

Guessing they disabled it as they're not ready to show special zones (or they're just not done yet).

I'm happy about this, searching for giant rings was one of the best new things about 3, and by far my favouite way to access the special zone.

Yes, I loved them!

I hope they bring these back. They were almost as fun as the main game.

So excited for this. Just worried it won't feel right like Sonic 4, which didn't feel like Sonic at all and wasn't much fun to play.

But if they get those 16-bit physics right then this'll likely end up being one of my favourites of 2017.

Just wow. It looks so pretty! I've see it said already but when I thought o Sonic 4, Sonic Mania is more what I had in mind. It's incredible the amount of time it's taken SEGA to get to this point. it's like they've made so many mistakes on their own that they are at a loss for what to do next so they let the fans in to show them how to make a classic Sonic game.

Proper physics! Elemental shields! Bonus Stages! Bosses after every act (Ala Sonic 3 & Knuckles). It all seems so easy because it's everything that was in the last classic game but it's everything that SEGA have failed to capitalise on until now.

Also that title screen is a work of art. A literal masterpiece.

What were the early 3D looking Sonic games seen in the trailer?
I want to play those
Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic R.

Yes, I loved them!

I hope they bring these back. They were almost as fun as the main game.

Luckily for you!: http://sonic.wikia.com/wiki/Blue_Sphere

Doesn't do anything for me.

Not a huge fan of the 2D Sonics.
