I don't need any useless bloatware. Since I'm not going to install the "NVIDIA Experience", how often will I be able to get new video drivers? How will I know they're available?

I currently have "359" installed, downloaded only a few days ago.

At the moment, you will miss nothing as Nvidia has cancelled their plans to do this shit.

However, if Nvidia would change their mind again and go with this plan, you would get 3-4 new drivers a year from their website. Geforce Experience locking was meant to happen for "GameReady" drivers, which are specifically designed to make a certain game work better. GameReady drivers come out all the time for big AAA game releases - one came out two weeks ago for Assassin's Creed Syndicate and another one came out today for Just Cause 3.

I'm one of those casual peasants that updates my driver through GFE. Then I close it out, run services.msc and stop their streaming service. That seems like the only thing that impacts game performance for me.

Oh my god we are back to this utter bullshit.

Having your (few) driver engineers working on a new API instead of improving your support for existing and commonly used standards and then performing worse when those existing APIs are actually used as specified (while pushing out marketing material claiming that this specification doesn't work) is not "sabotage".
It's a resource allocation decision.

Intel was busted sabotaging AMD.

AMD didn't exactly arrive at their current situation because of internal happenings.

I've personally had more issues with Catalyst Control Center than I've ever had with GFE, and GFE was just straight up fucked on my Windows 7 install. Once I upgraded to 10, it's been perfect. At worst it's mildly useless if you don't see the value in its auto-configurations, at best it's a (generally) low-impact service that lets you know when new drivers are out and other management tools.

The worst part of "signing up" for GFE is having to sign up to anything, since it's always just a matter of time until "huhu sorry we got hacked change all your passwords." As software it's negligible.

I have two rigs. One with an R9 290 and the other with a gtx 760. Geforce experience crashes,hangs and makes driver updates last for half an hour. I have never had any problems installing the drivers through CCC, nor has it crashed or froze on me, ever.

I hope they changed their mind for good, i never install geforce experience when i update my 980 drivers, cause i don't care about its features and it always takes a bit of performance away from the GPU running in background

Sounds like a terrible idea. Hopefully they renege on that. Also it would be nice if sli, gsync and dsr worked together (it's been over a year), or if more releases had SLI support.

Generally the tip in regards to stuff like this is to use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to completely clean out the drivers, then reinstall.

Ya thats sort of why I pointed out this particular issues as its not a DDU fixable problem.

There was some bug like this a few years ago. There's a chance the solution for that one will be useful here. The problem was caused by the password expiring for the account that the nvidia update service used. The solution was to check the account properties and make sure the password is set to never expire.

i looked up the error. seems to have a lot of frequency in development related applications (VS, Silverlight etc) but also some tie-backs into the .NET framework. if you don't use dev apps maybe try un/reinstalling .NET 4.0 and see if that helps?

OT: i accidentally installed GFE with my driver package a long long time ago. it only ever caused me distress the day after the w10 upgrade where i had to reinstall it and other than that i'd say it's a nice way to keep your drivers fully up to date. my only issue with it seems to idle with more RAM than i'd think was necessary; ~150-200MB (<1% of my system total). nvidia's plan is a shady way to force ppl to use it though and i can understand the pushback.
