Kansas Now Only State in USA Not Recognizing Legal Gay Marriages

Despite the fact that state agencies now in Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, and Mississippi are moving towards recognizing legal gay marriages within their states, despite the fact that there is an injunction that hasn't been stayed on the state's ban since November, despite the fact that the working precedent in the 10th Circuit (and now the country!) is that gay marriage bans are unconstitutional, and despite the fact that now every single judicial district in Kansas is issuing marriages to gay couples, the Brownback administration still hasn't recognized any of those marriages!

http://kcur.org/post/brownback-still-not-implementing-changes-after-same-sex-marriage-ruling

The U.S. Supreme Court ruling last week on same-sex marriage has yet to spur Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback into action on the issue.

On Tuesday, Brownback’s office reiterated what he said after Friday’s ruling – that he is reviewing the decision — but state agencies reported that officials aren’t making changes based on the decision.

“Our office is fully reviewing and analyzing the ruling in order to understand the implications and policy changes in order to follow and comply with the law,” said Melika Willoughby, Brownback’s deputy communications director.

Willoughby would not say when agencies would begin complying with the law, if ever.

Brownback did much the same thing last November when he wouldn’t recognize the marriages already being performed in the state after a federal appellate court ruling.

Without movement from the governor's office, same-sex couples can’t get on a spouse’s state worker health plan, be eligible for Medicaid benefits or get their names changed on a driver’s license.

Tom Witt of Equality Kansas was furious about the delay, saying it was time for Brownback to recognize “that marriage equality is the law of the land.”

But Witt was hearted by news Tuesday that all Kansas counties were issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples.

“Every chief judge in this state recognizes this is the law of the land,” he said. “Now it’s the governor’s turn.”

HOLD ON

IT'S NOT MISSISSIPPI?

As far as southern states go, they've been (fairy) compliant.

Some shitty governor sitting in his office screaming with his fingers in his ears while the entire state is handed out licensees is not exactly what the title of the thread says.

You can get marriage licenses. They are recognized. Brownback whinging is actually a bonus just to see him act like a baby.

Terrible thread title.

All of this is spelled out in the OP.

And no, it's an entirely accurate thread title. State agencies are not recognizing legal gay marriages, again, as stated in the OP.

For an administration that has supposedly been bending over backwards to make a welcoming climate for business, they're remarkably slow to align with the overwhelming consensus of big business on this issue, thus far.

But not the gotcha title.

State agencies in Kansas are not recognizing legal gay marriages. That is not hyperbole.

I've provided evidence in the OP. This is literally the biggest complain that Equality Kansas has been rallying about since November and continue to do so post-Obergefell.

If you have evidence to the contrary that is thus far unknown to any advocates in Kansas, please provide it.

Fucking ugh. This state is so awful.

edit: maybe I should have read the article. This state is okay. The fact that marriage licenses are getting issued is fantastic. Brownback, on the other head, is the largest shitlord in the universe.

Which state was the one with the people cutting the cake celebrating banning gay marriage?

The title is wrong in that multiple other states are dragging their feet as far as things like allowing name changes on licenses and health insurance.

Louisiana is one such state doing the exact thing as Kansas. There is no "last state" as multiple states are still doing it. The title is wrong.

http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2015/07/louisiana_gay_couples_licenses.html

But the Office of Motor Vehicles is under the control of Gov. Bobby Jindal, who hasn't let any of the state agencies under his supervision recognize same-sex marriage yet. Jindal has said the state government has to wait for a lower court to issue a ruling that complies with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on gay marriage before it starts recognizing same-sex couples.
Multiple states are purposely dragging their feet. By all means go to town on Brownback. That POS deserves it.

No, almost every parish in Lousiana is issuing marriage licenses, and Bobby Jindal already signaled that state agencies need to follow the court order. Please read the OP again:

http://www.politico.com/story/2015/...ly-same-sex-marriage-bobby-jindal-119512.html

“We don’t have a choice. Our agencies will comply with the court order,” the Republican presidential contender said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” after being asked why his state is the only one that has not yet issued marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Unlike Kansas, Louisiana doesn't technically have an injunction against the state until they get movement by the 5th Circuit. They technically don't have to do anything, but have already signaled that they're making movements towards recognizing gay marriages at the state level, something Kansas is not doing even though they've actually been enjoined from enforcing such laws since November. And unlike Jindal, Brownback has given no indication of any movement towards recognizing such licenses.

Please stop shitting up the thread, honestly?

But it's still true. All of those states have said they are accepting the decision and will move forward. Only KS has said they are studying the decision.

Gah, Ivy answered, and better.

So the holdouts are like: "OK, gays can marry, but can we still at least discriminate against them compared to heterosexuals?"

I'm in MS, and this was a safe bet, and I'm not sure we're out of the woods yet. I haven't had a chance to look for an update today, but as of last night, we had at least one county turning couples away based on "religious beliefs". The best (best = saddest) quote was from one of the county staff workers who said their clerk said the ruling was against the clerk office's religious beliefs. Unbelievable. This is an extremely rural county, even by MS standards. But the State AG has advised all counties to issue licenses and failure to do so would result in a suit.

Also, we had one county clerk resign her position yesterday based on religious belief, which, is totally fine I think. Move over and let someone else do the job they were elected to do.
