Demon's Souls |OT2| Soulsuckingly brilliant RPG full of Demon's Crack

Don't you just need to talk to him a few times. He won't accept it through the talk menu option though but just by interacting with him after talking to him.

Man... I've completed 1-2, 2-1, 3-1. I can't go too deep into 2-2 because I don't use magic. I've hit a wall in 3-2 because the boss simply kicked my ass.

I'm level 30. Focusing on strength and dexterity and I play like a sneaky agile character.

Should I go to 4-1 and 5-1 for now? Am I screwed if I don't start focusing on magic?
What are you getting stuck on in 2-2 that you think magic would help with? Having a ranged attack might help with some enemies, but there's nothing in the area you need range for and you can always use a bow.

Ignoring magic is not detrimental at all. But honestly, you should be able to handle 2-2 just fine. You can technically beat it very quickly and be rewarded with a ton of souls for the effort but you'll have to have a lot of patience and practice (as in, git gud) for the boss.

Well in 2-1 I was able to pickaxe my way through everything. In 2-2 that's ok until I get into the lava area. I saved that dude from the big bug by just wasting a few minutes smacking its butt with my sword enhanced by Turpintine. But I can't really do much as I get deeper into the tunnels. But really what should I do with these fire thingies?

The bugs have a lot of HP, you can either chip away at their health or run past them. If you've done 3-1 there is a poison rapier as loot there, that can help.

2-2 is quite big but there is a quick shortcut to the boss (from the spider boss archstone go right to the big drop down instead of left past the exploding carts) if you want to just do that and explore for loot later when your weapon is upgraded more. 2-2 boss is kind of notorious though, it might help to explore the level for upgrade materials and upgrade your weapon sooner than later.

Run past the small, flying bugs. You can wail at the larger ones pretty easily though.

Just a heads up, the boss of 2-2 is very difficult - I couldn't imagine not using magic on him. Thankfully, if you die just use the shortcut to get back to him.

Re: Yurt
It is best to kill him where you find him, if not he will return to the Nexus and begin killing other NPCs. Now he's dead you can open up the full sidequest of taking his place which is black character tendency dependent and involves another, as yet unseen NPC - you might have seen her in the loading screens though! There's no time limit on this sidequest, so you don't have to go black character tendency until you're ready

Re: 3-2
There are two chains to destroy, after which the way to the boss will open. Did you take one of the cage lifts that Yurt was in down to the bottom? If not, that's the next path to take.

I love 3-2, I think it's even better 3-1, Latria is easily one of the best areas of any Souls game :)

Yes, IMO it is the best area in Demon's.

3-2 > 3-1 > 5-2 >>> all the rest

So oppresive it physically hurts your mind.

3-2 is fantastic. Great follow-up to 3-1, which was also fantastic.

Just need to face the boss, unfortunately my armour broke just before I was gonna face him.

Magic is the coward's path.

I didn't go melee only until Dark Souls. Been meaning to play Demon's again as melee. Some day.

You can definitely melee 2-2's boss. In fact it's a lot more fun to!

I did so and it was not that hard if you are cautious and have the right gear. Purple flame shield and ring of flame resistance definately help, but its also just as effective to make sure you can roll quick even if you have to use leather armor (which was what I had to do using a quality falchion +3).

Oh right, upgrading my sword is probably a good idea.

No wonder it was so weak.

3-2 done (I'm putting the boss in the "I-don't-know-how-you'd-beat-this-without-magic" category), 3-3 next.

Beat the 3-3 NPC boss.

The fight before this guy had a spear that broke all my armour, my sword and my wooden wand. Turned the game off right there.

Two worlds left. 4 levels total: 1-3, 1-4, 4-2, 4-3.

Start a new game as a Temple Knight, upgrade your weapons with Crushing or Quality scaling. For Crushing crank STR to 34, ignore DEX and 2 hand everything, for Quality, take your STR to about 26, and DEX to 30 or so.

Pure melee is viable in all souls games, but Crushing in Demon's has one of the highest yields on damage of the entire series. Pure Greystone isn't too hard to acquire, neither is Pure Clearstone for Quality. Both require online advice or trial and error luck, whereas going with Pure Bladestone for DEX requires both a Wiki and probably extreme farming.

Dex with a nice katana and/or bow is the path of the king. So much fun.

1-3 is really good, definately a highlight.

Have fun with 4-2! D:

Oh I did!

TWO LEVELS LEFT.

I never thought I'd get this far...

EDIT: Ok so storm king was hella easy - one level left!!

EDIT2: Allant is a motherfucker. The fact that he can take a soul level from you is cheap shit.

EDIT 3: And thats the game! Allant was a really fun, though difficult fight. Couldn't have done it without warding. Amazing, amazing game. I'd like to play Dark Souls next but I may wait a few months. Maybe by then I'll have a PC to play it on for a more stable frame rate.

I finally managed to get my CT to pure white last night to get the friends ring from the monumental so now the only tendency related stuff remaining is the Mephistopheles quest which I want to do basically to get the foes ring and complete the full set of rings.

To get this I believe I need to kill a series of NPCs including Ostrava. Unfortunately Ostrava doesn't appear to have returned to the Nexus after I met and saved him in 1-1 (NG++ if that matters). Can I get him back (I haven't done any more of Boliteria beyond Phalanx) and kill him then? I can't remember if you also see him in 1-2 or whether it matters if he appears in the Nexus between 1-1 and 1-2.

If I can't get him back, can I start the Meph quest on this play through and continue it in the next so I can kill Ostrava in 1-1 even though he is the fourth(?) on the list?

If neither of the above work, what is the best way to approach this and ensure Ostrava stays alive long enough for me to find and kill Yurt (3-2) and start the Meph quest?

Thanks in advance for any help this one has me confused!

You don't have to kill Ostrava (unless you want to), just kill all 5 merchants one in each world (not the ones who come to the Nexus), and Crestfallen bro in the Nexus, that should be enough to get to PBCT.

Ostrava will be in the tunnel in 1-2 if you haven't done that yet (you see him behind the gate in the first room with the phallanx slimes and rescue him in the tunnel under the bridge).

You can also do everything in the game you want to, then release and kill Yurt and start the Mephistopheles stuff, there's no time limit on it thankfully. The last time I did it when going for 100% run I don't remember getting the request to kill either Biorr or Ostrava, probably because I left it as the very last thing before King Allant but I still got the Foe's ring just for killing Freke, Saint Urbain and Yuria, there's no unique rewards other than the ring - I'd completely forgotten she even asks you to kill Biorr and Ostrava.

Thanks Red, your help throughout has been much appreciated. If I could buy you a virtual beer in my imaginary Nexus bar and grill I would do!

That's good news. I assumed that for the quest itself you had to do each character on the full list* progressively and I would not get the next target until the previous was dead by my hands.

In my NG++ game I haven't freed any of them to return to the Nexus yet and I think Ostrava may already be dead so I was worried I would get to five of six and not be able to advance.

My PS+ runs out on Friday so time is of the essence to complete as much as I can as I'm really enjoying this game and don't think I can buy now I have downloaded it via PS+ (although I have already decided I won't platinum this as I haven't been lucky with Bladestone and I'm not much of a grinding loot type).

_________
* Mephistopheles quest objectives:
- Saint Urbain, Worshipper of God and Acolyte of God (Stone of Ephemeral Eyes)
- Sage Freke and his apprentice (Stone of Ephemeral Eyes)
- Patches, the Hyena (Colorless Demon's Soul)
- Biorr of the Twin Fangs (Colorless Demon's Soul)
- Ostrava of Boletaria (Talisman of Beasts)
- Yuria, the Witch (Foe's ring)

Don't worry about Ostrava not being in the Nexus the NPCs have a mind of their own sometimes, if he didn't die in 1-1, he'll be in 1-2.

Now I think back I killed Biorr after killing the Blue Dragon in 1-4, and probably Ostrava too since I was going PBCT, but like the wiki says if a mark is already dead it just moves along to the next character you don't get asked to kill them and don't get the reward. Mephistopheles definately didn't ask me to kill either of them and I still got the Foe's ring for killing Yuria.

And mine's a G&T! :p

I made it with an hour to spare! My licenses expired at 11:50 (though I ended up re-subbing anyway) and I got done at exactly 10:50! After I got the Foe's ring the relevant trophy didn't pop but after a quick look through the list I realised I was missing the Ring of Magical Dullness. Luckily Sparkly sorted me out in trade for black phantom Rydell's pole.

I felt a little bad killing NPCs that on previous play throughs had been either helpful purveyors of goods and magic or comrades in arms but the straight up sword and shield battles with Bjorr and Ostrava were really good fun so it made it worth it. I went full on knight style and put on the gloom armour to limit my movement, pulled out the little spiked shield and went at it with both of them with a simple short sword. I didn't realise quite how much health they had (or how much damage Ostrava's Rune sword can deal out) so it took longer than expected but clunking around the floor of the lower part of the Nexus locked in battle was pretty epic.

Great game, I wish Dark Souls was available digitally for a Sony platform but as it's not I'm wondering whether to make Dark Souls 2 or Bloodborne my next purchase. I think I'm also going to try Dragon's Dogma as that was PS+ game at some point, Demon's Souls has made swords fun and I want more of that!

Well done Ted! I'm surprised DS1 isn't available on PSN. I think I would play them in order, not for story purposes but just because of how the series develops, try to get your hands on DS1 in the meantime it's really special :)

Actually using magic makes a hell of a difference. Whoda thunk haha. The boss for 4-1 sure was a pushover. All I had to do was
walk down to his level after finally realizing the big lug was downstairs and I guess the vibrations were hurting me or something. Practically impossible for him to do any damage as he is so slow and my character is all about maneuverability. Even easier than the magic lady in 3-1. Or maybe it was because at level 43 it's just that much easier.

Also, Patches... F U. I am bidding my time but I will likely kill you at some point if you don't just vanish. Get the hell out of here with an anti-bleeding ring. I already had one.

First, well done! It's a game to be proud of beating it.
Bloodborne is probably the closest to Demon's Souls but I would go with Dark Souls first. I'm sure you can grab the Prepare to Die edition for cheap on PS3.

Feel bad that I just cheesed the 2-2 boss by accident. He got stuck behind some bones so I went to town with the soul Rays on him.

Thanks folks! :)

It definitely felt good to finish it, there's something about it that drives you to improve and when you get that perfect fight, that perfect parry, it almost feels like you are making your character dance. I tried a little PvP so I know I'm a long long way from technically mastering it but compared to the very first time I tried 1-1 it feels like I've come a long long way!

Not many games get multiple playthroughs from me but this one I'll probably play through a few more times yet despite being essentially "done" with it. That 95% trophy completion is going to bug the completionist in me though.

I'm keen to play DaS but none of our household PS3s have working physical media drives anymore so I may have to skip straight to DaS2. GAF seems broadly critical of it as a sequel but if I've not played DaS I suppose that is ultimately irrelevant.

I think in the immediate term I'm going to play Dragon's Dogma and see how I like that. We're pretty broke at the moment so I the I'm going to rule out the newer games and playing one of the PS+ choices seems like a pretty sensible alternative.

Thanks again all, it's been a pleasure.

Woo! Beat the demon in 2-3. Some large struggles at first but once I got to the stairs portion of the battle I completed the task in one try.
Comical moment after I slayed the demon. I was thinking maybe it will explode so I run away and accidentally fall off the cliff. My face was -_____- . Thinking I may have to redo the entire battle but luckily it registered the victory before my fall.

If you're pure white for Stonefang, hang a left at where you begin Dragon God's stage. Happiness ahead

I'm playing through this now. It's been a while since I played Dark Souls, but I think I like this game better. The gameplay is almost identical, but it's the organisation of having levels and stuff. It feels more manageable and interesting to me to have distinct levels with their own set of secrets and stuff. I know Dark Souls basically has levels, too, but I like having the Nexus as a hub and branching out from there.

I've cleared:

1-1, 1-2
2-1, 2-2, 2-3
3-1

I've fought Adjudicator twice. Died quickly the first time, got him to half health the second. I'll try a different strategy next time. Think that's what I'll go for next.

I've also run through 3-2 and 1-3. Both levels are really cool. My favourite areas are Boletaria Palace and the Tower of Latria so far (actually probably Latria edges out Boletaria. I found Yurt, and I know his deal, so I killed him right away and I stood in his cell not expecting anything to happen and then it shoots me down to this totally disgusting swamp area which feels like a pool of disease. Really cool! The black phantom Mindflayer got me though.

This is a good game. I think I'll actually complete it.

Adjudicator is one of the easiest bosses in the game, are you using ranged attacks or going straight down and hacking at where his wound is? You can cheese him with ranged I believe, but I it's easier just to get stuck in on him melee.

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
I'd thought bumping this for the hardcore Demon's Souls fans to see is worth it!

Orioto just created this and he deserves all the attention he can get for a (imo) masterpiece.

I need to get a new character rolling for a friend's first time through(I so envy him).

I've done: Sorcerer, Ranger, and Temple Knight. What'll be fun?

Ok, i was playing this game, really enjoying it, then i decided to acquire the bladestone trophy... My character got 60 levels while farming double katanas skeleton but no pure bladestone looted.
This isn't funny.

It can take a long time, are you in PBWT, that increases your drop rate for rare drops.

Yep, i was in pbwt... Anyway, I'm stopping here for now (end of vacations)... I hope that, when i'll be back to this game, some kind player will give me one pure bladestone... I have very little spare time and i don't want to waste it in such boring activities. :-(
