Just received an iPad mini 2 and I've been out of the loop regarding iOS and iPad games. Any must haves for iPad owners, especially free/cheap?

I know it's pretty tangent to iOS but dying for infos about a new cool/atmospheric scifi tactical game (hoping in Rodeo's next) I discovered Deadnaut (PC/Steam) today and fell in LOVE.
It would be GLORIOUS on iPad.

It's like Alien and Space Hulk had a baby with a TON of well written logs and banters between the characters, and everything is controlled with a lo-fi interface I just adore and that would be at home in the Nostromo.

If you happen to be interested and have a PC, check it out, there is a demo (Win/OSX/Linux).
Then pester the devs about an iPad version as I'm going to do.
Daily :)

EDIT: forgot the link, of course... http://deadnaut.com

I'd love for Deadnaut to come to iPad, but I really like something would be lost in the process. A bit part of the atmosphere is feeling like you're sitting at a command console, switching between screens. I don't think that would be come across well on a tablet

Talking about PC games, did you ever check out Capsule?

I'm not sure it would lose the atmosphere...I get what you are saying but IMHO playing at night holding the iPad like a lofi screen interface (maybe swipe left or right for the side panels) would be great (just lost my entire squad after I activated an unknown power unit....which apparently powered a huge laser cannon :)
It would add a tactile feel with all those buttons I can't really feel using the mouse.

I tried Capsule and it's great (would be great on iPad too)....unfortunately I can't enjoy any game, no matter what, at PC or console for some reasons anymore.
I wrote the dev about an iOS version but received no answer, he doesn't seem interested.

where's the best place to keep up to date with iOS sales and iOS price drops/games turning free? Just upgraded to a 5s from a 4s and wondering... :)

Touch Arcade have an app where you can 'Watch' games and be notified of sales etc.

AppShopper you can create wishlists and get emails on sales.

Have you heard about Card Crawl? It's a "Solitaire style Dungeon Crawler", the art style looks pretty cool. Can't try it out myself though since I'm on Android but it's pretty popular amongst friends on my twitter feed. It's €1,99.

I bought this last night and tried it out. It's good, but it feels like it's lacking a little depth right now. There's not much variation in playing through, although you can unlock new abilities so maybe that'll help. Still, it's entertaining enough and the presentation is great.

There's no Android version (yet?) and for sone reason I can't play Solitaire. I don't know why, I just can't. I think I might be too dumb for Solitaire. But I'm a lefty. I'm artsy. *cries*

Age of zombies is back to 2d lol. That backpedaling. I think if they just made the 3d look better or made it an option....

Do you know anything about that gorgeous Advance Wars like iOS title? I even forgot the name, because I did not hear anything about it in a long time now.

I'm off to a plane ride in 5 hours, any suggestions for games to take on my new iPad mini 2?

I'm considering:

- Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies
- Bastion
- Civilization Revolutions 2

Any suggestions?

Picked up Paper Monsters Recut today as it was on sale and I had heard good things. Speaking peraonally, I wouldn't waste your time or money on it.

It doesn't do anything wrong (in that it plays competently enough) but it makes no effort to do anything interesting and has no real "soul" to it. If you're looking for a platformer on iOS I'd much sooner have somoen buy Leo's Adventure.

Is Card Crawl any good? It looks amazing at least.

I'm enjoying it. It's a little too heavily based on luck, however. I'll have one game that's a cake walk and another where I just get handed monster after monster and get killed pretty quickly.

That said, there's an option to play with ability cards that you choose (they need to be unlocked either through gameplay or coins earned) that can make it a bit more strategic.

The game kind of got me wanting a deeper poker or solitare based RPG game (aside from the obvious Sword & Poker).

Has anyone played Runespell: Overture? Reviews seem mixed both on iOS and Steam, but it looks promising.

Yeah, I played the original Paper Monsters and while it was good, it wasn't so good that it made me want to jump on the Recut version.

Now, if Crescent Moon was able to bring Shadow Blade: Reload to iOS (even if it were just for Metal devices), I'd be all over that without hesitation.

And, off topic but on the subject of mind-blowing platformers, if you have a Xbox One or PC capable of running it, get Ori and the Blind Forest now. It's fucking amazing and easily my GoTY so far.

Seconded. Ori is so fricking amazing. And last week was insane for PC/Console gamers :)

Card Crawl is great design throughout. Great, simple visuals and quick gameplay. As much randomness as Solitaire, but with enough strategy each round that you don't feel like it's always totally out of your control.

I can't stop playing this.

So chatting with Dead Mage on Twitter, sounds like they are indeed planning to bring Shadow Blade: Reload to iOS! Loved the original and have heard great things about the new levels and mechanics in Reload. Looking forward to it.

Card crawl isn't like solitaire, I'm not sure why I keep seeing it referred to like that. It uses cards, but the structure is very different. You have 13 hit points, two equipment slots and a backpack space. The cards you turn over can either be potions (restore hit points), enemies (take off hit points), shields (reduce damage), swords (reduce enemy's hit points) and coins (add to coin total). There are also special cards which allow different abilities like redrawing cards or doing damage to enemies etc.

You go through the deck four cards at a time, and you have to use three of the cards you draw. You can discard item cards for coins if you can't use them due to lack of space. The game is in trying to manage your health points and get through the whole of the deck. It's interesting to play and there's a little strategy but you can easily end up drawing four high-point monsters in the same round and have to take damage to redraw, or be left in a situation where there's no winning move. It's obviously random so there's no way to win every game. Still, they're quick to get through. Getting coins allows you to unlock more ability cards so that helps to add a little variety, but there's not a huge amount of depth. The design is great though and it's entertaining enough.

Oh, very cool. Reload is such a huge improvement over vanilla Shadow Blade. You guys are going to love it
