Naw, he was smart enough to stay the hell away.

The good news was that 50SOG had a 79 percent drop. The bad news is that it may still win the weekend. FML.

It's weird to think that everybody expected such a big drop and they released absolute bullshit the following weekend. When the highlight is yet another Kevin Costner inspirational sports movie, you done fucked up.

I'm a bit late to the party this week. My daughter turns 1 on Monday, so my family was up visiting.

50 Shades of Grey collapsing is not really a surprise. Since FSoG had an inflated opening night due to previews, you would typically expect the full weekend drop to soften. However, last Saturday was also inflated due to Valentine's day. As such, the full weekend drop will probably remain >70%. The film will most likely miss $200M domestic despite the large opening.

China pulled all holdover releases from theatres earlier in the week to make room for 7 new local releases (in time for their new year). As such, Mockingjay Pt 1 only made it to $35M in its 1.5 week run, despite a decent opening. Those overly invested in the now moot Mockingjay vs Guardians showdown can take solace in the fact that Guardians will remain on top worldwide thanks to China (where GotG made $96M).

Does this happen every year?

I'm not sure, but China does whatever they want when it comes to movie release schedules and theatrical runs. The Government runs that, and they stack things in favor of local films.

Hollywood films having their legs cut out from under them is not an uncommon thing.

Wasn't the competition only Domestic though, since Transformers made like a billion?

Also I did not expect Hot Tub Time Machine 2, to do that bad. Sure it's a comedy sequel that no one wanted, but still. That's absoutely terrible.

Jackie Chan as Huo An (霍安)
John Cusack as Lucius
Adrien Brody as Tiberius

What?
Don't tell me you haven't been dying to find out if Jackie Chan can beat John Cusack and/or Adrien Brody in a fight.

I really hope we get that Jet Li vs. James Franco film I've been dying for now.
