I wonder how much the migration away from "star power" driven films was driven by studios themselves. It gives them much more leverage in content creation, whereas before they were at least marginally at the behest of what the top actors wanted. The one thing studios didn't have complete control over -- acting talent -- has become much more of a fungible resource.

Kingsman should have been PG-13. Would have likely been much better counter-programming to 50 Shades at that rating.

Nice opening for the Kingsman and super impressive stuff from Fifty Shades of Grey. Should be interesting how well it holds next week.

What no and miss out on one of the best scenes this year.

how close is Sniper to passing Passion?

Domestically, about $70 million, give or take. No way American Sniper makes that. At least I wouldn't think.

What the fuck is this shit? A quality R rated action film -- a rarity in this day and age -- does well and people are whining it didn't do even better and needs to be PG-13? It will most likely have better legs than 50 Shades of Grey, so let's be thankful someone is still willing to make R rated action films.

I don't even care that 50 shades of grey is shit.

Feels good to have rated R movies crush PG-13 flicks like Jupiter Ascending. More, please!

I still want to see Jupiter ascending I heard it was bad, I enjoy bad movies so it's a win win for me. Kingsman was good. I have no interest in 50 shades.

Its running out of steam.
Passion had the month of April (Easter) to add in a lot of gross.

Ya, I doubt it gets there. Around $350M is probably a more realistic endpoint.

So barely the worst grossing of the three (although all three films made serious bank). Am a bit surprised it didn't beat Smaug because of it being the final in the trilogy.

Shitty exchange rates in Europe and elsewhere have lead to lower overseas grosses, even though attendance was on par or up in most places. China saved the film from not being the lowest grossing by a larger margin.

Eventually agents became Stars' worst enemy. Reese Witherspoon somehow commanded a $15-$20 million a movie price tag and she had a string of movies that just were not profitable. So some of these stars become hard to cast because they become one of the biggest production costs going into the movie. And many of them just don't work in blockbuster movies. the one exception I think is Tom Hanks, who does a incredible job selecting the right movies.

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
I won't lie, I'm pretty irritated at how well Fifty Flops of Grey did

Kingsman was great though, I hope the movie has legs, the lead (Taron Egerton) deserves a career out of this

It was a long time coming. Ever since the days that Michael Ovitz headed up CAA, the studios have been doing everything they can to try and cut down on the spending on talent like that, especially with the deals he pulled off. Who would have thought that this kind of thinking would have been undone by the very brands that they were supposed to help sell, rather than the other way around. The Marvels, the DCs, the Harry Potters, the Hunger Games; all of those are so much more important that the actors these days.

I hope so, I fear that it will have legs =/

I don't think 50 has a good shot at legs. I don't know a single female who liked it let alone would go see it again or recommend it.

Overseas will probably save it but domestically its probably done most of its gross already

I saw Kingsman last night and again this morning. Both times the theater was packed. And the switched from a smaller screen last night, to a larger one today. There was also a line waiting for the next showing. I'm thinking it'll have legs.

'Kingsman' was really good. I liked it a lot. Great lead (not annoying) decent script, great action. It was a really good popcorn flick. The scene when they
imply blowing up Obama's head
will sadly play really well some places in the US.

Otherwise, fantastic first entry into a series I look forward to.

I have recommended it to all my friends (and I am super tough to please with films)

Mostly from language I'd say. Not a lot of blood, but the action is brutal at times.

Yeah it's almost entirely the language and very small amount of nudity that drives it squarely into R territory. There's surprisingly little blood and a lot of the killings are directed like an action comedy more than a straight R-action (think The Raid) film. It doesn't feel like it wastes the R rating per se, but that the production didn't feel the need to go all in with the gore as it might interfere with the feeling that we're watching a slightly unhinged tribute to James Bond.

50 Shades is pretty terrible, Even with the crazy opening I can see it topping out at $150 million or so. Great date movie for obvious reasons but that won't stop the 70% drop.

Franchises have been the stars of Hollywood for quite some while. It started with Spielberg and Lucas, so yeah, a while back.

Is there a single person that like the in them role?

Honest question, I've never seen anyone irl who liked it at all. And I know very few of them who saw it, but they all pretty much universally agreed that those two felt hella out of place

I thought that Channing fit the role perfectly. I was hoping Kunis would evolve more info a bad ass, but that didn't happen. I still liked her in it though.

I liked the movie. What I think it suffered from the most was trying to fit too much into the movie.

Heading in to see Jupiter Ascending preview for Australia, not sure what to expect and I don't really like Tatum in anything.

Based on my anecdotical evidence, the legs will be horrible for Fifty. I have yet to hear a person who liked or wasn't Disappointed after watching it.

50 shades is gonna be massively front loaded imo. I think its gonna see a huge drop next week.

Does it matter? The film more than made back its costs, plus advertising, plus profit in the first weekend.

Even if it tanks from here on out, it is already a success for the studio.

Nobody seems to like ANYONE in the movie, but everyone seems to agree the worst performance in the film isn't even theirs, it's Best Actor nominee Eddie Redmayne.

So if Eddie Redmayne is shitting the bed twice as hard as the two leads, I'm betting it's not the quality of actor that's lacking, it's the direction. Choices were made that turned out to be bad ones. Sorta like how people are arguing over in the Nightcrawler thread about Gilroy having Howard compose the score he composed. There was a deliberate choice made to have the score sound like that, and it didn't work for a lot of people. The Wachowskis made a BUNCH of deliberate choices to make Jupiter Ascending play the way it played. They didn't land.

Now they're going to make smaller films. Hopefully this reinvigorates them, as Bound is still one of the best things they ever did.

Yeah, Jupiter Ascending suffered from both a bad script and bad direction (visual design kicked ass though).

It definitely matters if they want to make the sequels

If they keep the costs at the same level for the sequels (I don't see why it would go up in budget much considering there's zero need for expensive CG or special effects), the sequels are guaranteed to make money even if they don't do as well as this one.

Great for Kingsman. Hope for some more Millsr adaptions. Jupiters Legacy would be great.

I haven't read any of Millar's work before other than Superman: Red Son, but reading The Secret Service was almost painful after having seen Kingsman. The movie is so much better than the comic it's not even funny. I'm genuinely surprised they were able to pull anything good from that trainwreck.

Mostly from language I'd say. Not a lot of blood, but the action is brutal at times.

And that one scene that's def. not kid friendly.

I was happy to watch 50 Shades of Grey, and it was a fun movie. It won't likely be in consideration for my best of 2015 lists, but it's nowhere near as bad as people have suggested. Hell, I seriously thought it was better than Boyhood, although I absolutely hated that movie outside of Patricia Arquette's performance. I'll take Jamie Dornan over Ethan Hawke any day of the week.

I can see a 75% drop coming for 50 next weekend. I hope some of that crowd goes to see Kingsmen now that V-day is past us. Very glad to see it do well. Wasn't expecting my theater to be sold out for the showing we went to.
