Suikoden 2 -- The Best PlayStation RPG?

Suikoden 2 is incredible.

I have not had extensive hands-on playtime with any of the Suikoden games until this week when I have started playing Suikoden 2 on my PSP. I've logged 13 hours and have just finished the scene where all the Knights of Matilda turn in their badges to support Camus and Mikoltov (Molotov? I can't remember) in joining with the hero. I am constantly blown away by this game-- it's complex plot is both heartwarming and heartrending, the characters are all distinct and likable, its visuals are absolutely beautiful with tons and tons of animation and personality, and its soundtrack is simply superb.

I'm a huge Matsuno fan, and this game reminds me of his work a lot. The writing isn't his style so much (and the localization is somewhat subpar, with an iffy translation and a number of audio errors), but the plot and character relationships remind me so much of Final Fantasy Tactics with Ramza and Delita. The hero and Jowy have such a well-developed relationship. I can't remember the last time I've played a video game and had my feelings for all the various characters change so drastically and so rapidly. And that's what I really like about it: it's full of genuine, emotional moments that focus on these strong character relationships.

There's not a whole lot about saving the world or defeating a prehistoric evil, there's simply a conflict between two political entities and the struggle one side faces in uniting against a powerful empire and the crazed Luca Blight, who totally lives up to the hype as the darkest, nuttiest villain in JRPG history. And there are so many amazing scenes that I've been genuinely affected by: the hero's return home to his sister Nanami, Nanami, Pilika, and the hero's wait for Jowy's return home (and his subsequent "betrayal"), the hero being raised to Lord of North Window, the knights and their medals, and so many more.

The battle system is also great fun. The encounter rate is fair and battles are lightning fast. Formations allow them to be somewhat strategic and entertaining. "War battles" (think Advance Wars) are full on strategy battles between the two armies and often allow for some cool intertwining of narrative and gameplay.

I just love all these characters so much and the plot is so controlled and intriguing. The graphics are amazingly detailed and full of personality and life. I feel like I've missed so much by missing this series and I feel like a bunch of you probably have too. You should play Suikoden-- you'll like it!

I have S2, but I have yet to start it. About halfway through S5 (and I was halfway through S3 until my memory card died on me).

While characters and story are good, my problem is that the battle system really requires no thought whatsoever. Probably the easiest RPGs I've ever played. Not sure if S2 is the same at all. I will admit though, I still don't mind the battles because at least they make them incredibly painless.

One of my absolute favorites. I loved this game so much back in the day and is one game that I replay often which is very rare for me.

If you already like it after 13 hours you're gonna love the rest of the game.

Very awesome, and high up there. Took just about everything that was good about the first and made it great.

I'd still have to give the nod to Vaklyrie Profile, though. I think that's my favorite PSOne RPG. Grandia also scores very high.

I liked Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Grandia and Lunar TSS much more than Suikoden II, but that's just my 2 cents.
I liked particularly the combat playstyle of those ones, which is the first thing I look at in a JRPG most of the times since the amount of time you spend in battles. I liked Vagrant Story much more than SII too, but I don't think it can be considered the traditional RPG so I don't think it would go in that list.

(Yes, I really think so)

You broke it. (I disagree personally)

But yes, Suikoden II is the best RPG on the original Playstation. Actually now that I think about it it's the best RPG on ANY Sony console.

Lunar: Eternal Blue Complete gives it some tough competition though. On some days I might even consider it better than Suikoden II.

Love VP1, and I think it's one of a kind. Truly unique and I think tri-ace's best.

I tried Grandia but I don't like the dungeons. So I might move on to Grandia 3, which I haven't tried.

One of my favorites for sure.

I've only played it once (borrowed) and I have very fond memories of playing it. I wish it was easily obtainable today. Only psx games I enjoyed playing more were Legend of Man, Persona 2 and Chrono Cross.

Yeah, I agree. Tri-Ace has never been able to match or exceed VP, unfortunately.
Grandia III... now I liked it. Probably one of the few on GAF. It probably has the best JRPG combat system in the history of the franchise. And for a PS2 game, it's damn pretty, with some great cutscene direction as well. But holy fuuuuuuuck do the story and characters blow chunks. Atrocious stuff. The game literally feels incomplete.

This may actually be true. To me the only real competition for the title on PS1 would be Xenogears.

I agree that the Suikoden series as a whole is quite underappreciated (even 4, which is far worse than the others, is still not that bad a game overall).

Sony/Konami needs to get this up on PSN so everyone can enjoy it without paying ridiculous prices. They've got the first one up, wish they'd get the second one up. That or a reprint, but please, somebody, somewhere, do something!

Is Suiko 2 on the slate for a PSN Store release? Whatever happened to the re-release of 1 & 2 on the PSP?

Its out in Japan. Sony won't let them bring it over since its too much of a straight port.

Sony shot down a localized version of Suiko I & II, much like they shot down BoFIII and Tales of Eternia. I think the PSP versions also sold like ass. No hope that's happening.

However, considering that Suiko I has already hit PSN, it's only a matter of time until Suiko II does as well.

as someone who loves the Suikoden series, this game is ridiculously overrated

though I guess I should be grateful for that; I sold my copy for 108 (ironic number, eh?) bucks on ebay a few weeks ago.

Retronauts 67 says that Sony eventually approved the port but Konami wasn't interested.

Well that's just backwards logic... From what I can tell, Suiko is pretty much a straight port too. I haven't noticed any differences. Am I just not reading between the lines of your statement?

I never got a chance to play Suiko 2 so I'm really hoping one way or another it makes it to the store. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Fuck KONAMI

I fucking face-palmed.

That shit is so depressing. But yeah, S2 was and will always be the best RPG for the PS1 to me.

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
One of the best J series for stories and Suikoden 2 is the golden capstone. Many games with far less plot and character fall flat on their face where Suikoden succeeds.

Man I didn't enjoy the combat at all in this game. I tried it out for a few hours and couldn't get into it. I liked the story though...

Its way up there. For me i put Xenogears & FF: Tactics above it. But man Suikoden 2 is an AWESOME RPG. One of the all time greats. And what makes it really shine is playing suikoden 1 before it. There's so manny hidden gems with that feature.

I really missed out on this game when it came out. The reviews scored it all in the 8s so i passed it. Thanks to the word from message boards i picked it up Suikoden 1 & 2 on ebay (before a huge demand on the game) and was stunned how amazing the games were.

The best castle in the series, really fun battle system, awesome characters, great music, and villians you love to hate.

The game has it all.

I just forgot how much I love 2d gaming. Yeah, the handhelds have a lot, but it's been a while since I played a game with this much sprite animation.

what helps is how well animated suikoden 2 is. All the movement has a lot more life to it. And when you can easily fill up the whole screen with all these lively animated characters it really gives the game its pop.

I would say Vagrant Story but pitting one against each other..

VS is so different from S2 that it's unfair to compare one to the other(a good thing) and decide which one is a better rpg. Vastly different games but the best in their class.

I don't think it was so much "not interested" as it was a matter of the dev team having been disbanded, leaving no one to do the localization work. This is pretty common and I find it hard to come down too hard on Konami about it. If SCEA hadn't had their heads stuck up their asses about PSP content for so long it would never have been an issue in the first place.

Also, yes, Suikoden II is the best PS1 RPG.
