Good article on why Black Panther could be a game changer for Superhero films.

Part of the reason many Marvel fans were concerned about BP even being MADE is because of that, and because there are certain implications about Black Panther and Wakanda in general that challenge stereotypes and just might make some people uncomfortable. It's not ultra contreversial, but there's room for concern and commentary.

My only concern about a Black Panther film being made was that risk averse studios don't like casting black people as the leads in their big budget action movies unless there name is Will Smith.

It never occurred to me that once we finally made it over that hurdle (12 or 13 films in yeah?), Marvel would suddenly break into a sprint.

Thanks. That's a interesting choice, I like it.

Can't wait until he summon elephants and shit

like mentioned, the phoenix force didnt change the people it possessed or forced them to do things against their will. it amplified their desires. thats why piotr tried to get kitty back. i dont see how they get praised for all the humanitarian stuff they did while possessed, but when namor took atlanteans to war to flood wakanda, it was the phoenix doing

but thats exactly what it does, its the phoenix force that is never supposed to be bound to a mortal for long, because of what happens when it experiences emotions. That retcon was ridiculous , Jean saved the fucking galaxy before she was about to burn it all down, the PHOENIX feels mortal emotions and then goes nuts. Its job is to guard the M'Krann crystal , its never supposed to be bound to anything for too long which is why it ultimately got Jean killed too.

Well, right, which is a larger issue I've discussed with people and is also concerning.

It's going to be interesting to see how people react to it. Black lead, black cast, high tech black society. Also no Will or Denzel!

It'll more than likely be this, though:

It's nice to speculate about the impact of a movie, but this is a Marvel/Disney movie and up until now they have always played it extremely safe in order to attract a big crowd. Black Panther won't be different.

But that's the thing. It amplifies our desires, good and bad. When you want to do good and you can do it the choice is pretty simple, like the P5 doing humanitarian stuff.

On the other hand people want to do bad shit all the time, but usually we manage to refrain ourselves. How many times have you wanted to punch someone in the face but you didn't do it? How many times did you wish you could kill some motherfucker who did you wrong but you didn't actually do it?

Colossus wouldn't normally do what he did to spidey but the phoenix made him lose control.
Cyke wouldn't kill Chuck even if sometimes he consciously or unconsciously wished to, but the phoenix made him lose control.
Namor wouldn't normally destroy an outside country and kill innocents just to capture a bunch of guys, but the phoenix made him lose control.

The story is pretty clear that these guys were not in control and where not their usual selves. Even the X-men who supported then in the beginning realized that and abandoned then.

You say people give a pass to the P5 for doing humanitarian stuff and is easy to see why. Doing good is in their nature, it's usually what they do. Attacking or killing friends and innocent people is not.

And a lot of the guys saying it was OK to destroy Atlantis and commit genocide were the same guys saying Cyclops should get a pass. If Cykes gets a pass so does Namor but mostly so does the Atlanteans who were just doing what they were told.

Namor's judgement was not only corrupted by the Phoenix, but he was influenced by Emma Frost. She made him do it. Without her influence Namor probably wouldn't do it.

Now, everything I said don't makes Namor innocent, and he certainly has to pay for what he did (I don't think BP wanting to get revenge is wrong or out of character) but I think this is enough to show how Shuri was wrong in attacking Atlantis like that. Even T'challa thought it was wrong, he wanted to make Namor pay, and no one else.

I may be wrong (and someone correct me if I am, I don't read many X-men comics anymore), but to this day I haven't seen Cyclops acknowledging what he did. He stills maintains he was not in control.

He did own up to it the same way Namor said he was going to own up to saving the universe a couple times by destroying alternate Earths with the Cabal.

In the end I'm just happy this story is so great that it generates such heated debates. Hickman is good.

Just because there are better Green Lanterns than him.

yeah, but we're not getting a Kyle movie

We still live in Geoff Johns's world, so it'll be Hal Jordan or nobody. Maybe we'll get Stewart to be Jordan's Diggle or something, but that's it.

Marvel Studios is adding a third yearly release in 2017. Between GotG2 and Thor 3, that's $1.5bil without counting potential growth. Marvel can see it as an opportunity to take risks with Black Panther. For all we know the third yearly film has a smaller budget with lower expectations for that reason.

I think a John Stewart Green Lantern could bring some salt as well.

Believe it or not people asked why they made Green Lantern white for the movie. Some of the audience only knew the character from the Justice League cartoon.

I'm always interested in Black Panther ever since I discovered him as a starter in Marvel Heroes. Any good comics suggestion ? I'm really easily confused with issues and series so hardcovers graphic novels would be appreciated.

Also, obligatory badassery :

If they think Marvel is gonna push boundaries, they are crazy. Their movies are some of the safest movies being made these days. Plus, DC is already trying that grittier, deeper meaning angle, and its not working out for them, at least financially. Marvel knows this and isn't going to stop making big dumb popcorn movies that reel in a billion dollars, idc what the material is.

I'm just the eternal cynic though, I hope they prove me wrong.

But BP isn't dark and gritty.

It doesn't need to be grittier at all. I think it should be bright with African landscapes and architecture mixed with future tech.

It also doesn't need to be any "deeper" than how The Winter Soldier handled it's themes.

Mix in some really visceral hand-to-hand combat and a couple big set pieces and we are golden.

Personally, I'd really like it if they went with an approach making Wakanda look backwards and uncivilized, but as soon as they dig deeper they find out how much technology and knowledge they have available to them, and the audience finds out how unwise it is to make presumptions about foreign people.

That, and I'd also like to see an opening sequence of Boko Haram being cut to pieces from the shadows (think Ninja Assassin in an African village), and you find out it was because one of their kidnapped victims was Wakandan.

I like your second thing, especially how your second idea reminds me of how they 'updated' Iron Man's origins for the MCU.

Your first idea could be done well, but only if the charade only lasts for a minute or two of the quick 'action intro' of the solo BP movie. I'd like for some of the true Wakanda to shine through T'Challa's appearance in Civil War.

Yeah, the "turns out they're hyper-advanced" thing seems like it'd only work for a couple minutes at best. Having some ambassadors talking to the locals just outside of actual Wakandan borders only to go over a hill and see some big metropolis, etc.

Yea that second one sounds like it'd be awesome.

see, all this does is remove responsibility from the actions of him and others. would pete try to attack spidey? probably not, but what he did to kitty? all him. magik? that was all her. shes more than aware that shes all fucked up. both emma and namor have admitted to their actions. hell namor has even admitted to enjoying it. the phoenix force is like alcohol. it doesnt change who you are, it just reveals what you are really all about. if they have humanitarian aspects that shone through, than the other shit is just as much a part of who they are. hell, hes flooded new york with no sign of mental manipulation

I would definitely recommend The Man Without Fear. It was my intro to Black Panther and I loved it from the start.

I'm just glad he isn't American.

Too bad they are missing Namor and Doom to complete Marvel's wacky political adventures.

I'm still holding hope for the Atlantean. If Aquabore is getting his own movie the supremely cooler Namor can't be too far away

Have there been plot leaks? I just have a feeling that BP will spend all of 20 minutes in Wakanda and 70 in the US saying things like "Americans are so strange".

Name them. Kyle is mary sue trash by the way.

Hal is the luckiest man in existence. Guy just bashes his way out of every problem and it hasn't helped half of the time.

You just named all the Lanterns better than John Stewart : Anyone not named Alan Scott or Simon Baz

Wouldn't Hal be considered a Mary Sue since Johns starting writing the character?

Besides, Guy is the best Lantern.

Cool to see the infographic updated with Namor's shared rights. I imagine Man-Thing is in there too, as his wife was in IM3 and like someone said he was named dropped by Hill in AoS.

Once upon a time he was a big deal.

If Gambit can get his own movie, Nathan could too... maybe.

gambit was far more recognizable than nate. love him or hate him, you know who he is.

cable is known in the public eye as the dude who fucked up cats on genosha. he hasnt left comics since outside of mvc2 and bit parts in other games

Betting the infographic was made when Liefeld was spouting off on twitter about a standalone X-Force movie getting made.

ok, that makes sense
