I've been reading this afternoon a bit more...

In my build above, is my mobo going to create any issues when I opt to OC the CPU?

from what I remember Z97's are for overclocking the H were the ones that couldn't. I try to buy the popular Mobo so there are lots of OC guides for it, makes it easier and less guess work.

I can't find much in the way of reviews or user experience with overclocking using that motherboard, but it should be fine for something like 4.5GHz.

It is possible to optimize the cost of that build and go for a slightly more expensive motherboard like a Gigabyte. I looked around and you should be able to save $40 by going with cheaper but still good alternatives for case, graphics card, RAM, and power supply. That $40 could go towards a higher end motherboard.

I'll post an actual build for you later.

My GPU, 6950 2GB, is slowly dying. Overheating and it's throttling my games. I plan on buying a beefy card next year but right now I want to buy a decent card to replace it. Looking at spending about $150 but would prefer if it was something that outperforms my 6950 which of course shouldn't be hard at all.

Thank you.

In that price range, you could get a GTX 760 or an R9 270X. They're close in performance and price, and both are a decent upgrade over your 6950.

That said.. are you sure it's dying? If it's overheating, that could mean an issue with the GPU cooler. Perhaps it needs some dust cleaning. Buying a card now to just upgrade again next year seems wasteful.. if you're OK with the current performance level of your 6950, you can get a GTX 750 Ti that is roughly comparable to your 6950 for just a bit over $100.

Hey GAF: Good deal?

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 - $58.99 on Newegg ($27 off)

Or am I better off waiting for a really good deal on 16GB? I'm not in a particular rush, but this deal sounded pretty good and I don't think I really need 16GB. (I'm currently running 8GB of 1600 ram, but it's in a 4x2GB array which kind of leaves no room for upgrade in the future)

Unless you're doing heavy media production, you will likely never need more than 8GB of RAM. Even if you fill up all of the slots, it's not a big deal if you won't need to expand in the future. Check your RAM usage, if you hit 80% frequently, then that could be a need for more RAM.

If you do want to upgrade, then there's 8GB G.Skill DDR3-1600 for $55. Replacing two of your existing sticks with that will yield 12GB of RAM total.

If you're interested in just replacing all of it and shelling out even more for a 2 x 8GB set for 16GB, then there's Team Elite Plus DDR3-1600 for $115, which is a bit more expensive price per GB compared to that 8GB kit.

Or get two of these Team Dark DDR3-1600 1 x 8GB kits for $57 each, $104 total.

I'd have suggested 16GB Team Vulcan DDR3-1600 for $110, but that's out of stock.

what's up with all the nice r9 280s being out of stock?!?!

It's always interesting to see what avenues a new board opens up. I was dead set on a 512mb MX100 but seen the new M.2 SSD's and am now going with that as my main drive. Reads over 1000MB and writes over 800 are amazing.

Nice, I've been thinking of getting one since my mobo has the port. I would have had if i knew it when I bought my parts.

Yeah the temps are hitting into the 90 celcius range. Already cleaned it out and it has an aftermarket cooler. So yeah I am in need of a replacement, unfortunately. Thank you for your help, good sir.

Hmm, ~$250 for 512GB isn't too bad. Looks like Transcend and Crucial's offerings aren't much faster than SATA3 models, in some respects, though. Still around 500Mbps read/write.

Thwvorices for SSD's are starting to get comfortable. The M.2 drive that I want is a PCIE x4 which means I will have 4 more lanes for a potential future upgrade. I'm all about that performance but the MX100 is great too.

A stronger graphics card and power supply, cheaper faster RAM, and a case and heatsink that's compatible with each other.

You might as well sell them together unless someone wants to buy one of them separately. I see parts like that going on craigslist for $50 at most.

So I'm going to go with this build. I need it to have bluetooth and Wifi. What do I need to add?

You can add a USB or internal PCI-E card for that. I think some of the sales for those items have changed now, I know the power supply is no longer going for that price. I'll make a newer build when I get home.

Edit: Yeah, the old list of parts is almost $850 now. Oh well.

Here's the new build for about $700.

Same processor, but I had to skimp on some of the other parts. The great looking Corsair 350D case is gone, you'll have to settle for the not-so-cool but slightly more compact Cooler Master N200. Had to go with a more expensive power supply, but it's quality and well-reviewed. Dropped the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo heatsink, you can always buy and install that later if temps are too high, the case will fit it, and allows easy access to install a heatsink backplate.

On the other hand, I added an even slightly better (and more expensive) video card and added bluetooth/wifi. Not a lot of suitable and decent graphics cards under $200.

The R9 280X will get just under 60 frames per second on BF4's ultra settings, and should do well (just not sure how well) on WoW's ultra settings. Turning down AA and shadows or going to high settings will bring it to 60+ for BF4, I believe. As for WoW.. I'm not actually sure. Depends on the scenario and how much stuff is on screen, but it should be more than adequate for higher settings. It's hard to pin down specs, it apparently used to be that the 280X managed 60fps easily, but that was changed with an update. WoW is heavy on the CPU, so in the future, dropping in this $30 bargain CPU cooler and overclocking could be an answer.

Yeah, there were better deals to be had during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Lots of people say deals suck during those days, but that doesn't mean that retailers won't crank up the prices after those days pass..

I got my new pc working. Posting from it. Anyone try hooking two monitors up to a Asus Strix 970? I have one on HDMI and one on DisplayPort and it's not detecting the displayport monitor.

Hey guys, I was looking parts for my new PC and this one was on sale:

http://www.jimms.fi/tuote/GV-R929XOC-4GD

AMD Radeon R9 290X Windforce 3, 4GB GDDR5, 2xDVI/HDMI/DP, PCI-E 3.0

It's 349.00 €, making it cheaper than 970 or regular R9 290. Would that be a good choice for the Excellent build over the those other two?

Anyone? I tried to compare the specs online and it seems that this one has a slight upper hand on other cases and on others not

Oh boy. Let me regale you with my tales of woe as I tried to create a bootable Windows USB using a Mac. Actually, let me not. Long story short, you can't create a bootable Windows USB on a Mac, probably because of the way Mac formats the USB drive. It took me several days and tens of tries to figure this out.

What I ended up doing, and what you should do too, is create a bootable Linux USB on your Mac (I went with Ubuntu). Install Linux on your new PC and use it to download WinUSB, which is a Linux program that lets you create bootable Windows USBs. Create your Windows install USB using this program, and then restart your PC and use it to install Windows. You're going to have to format the drive completely in order to get rid of the Linux installation you did earlier.

In other news, I finally got around to overclocking my GPU. I managed to overclock my R9 280 from its base 850/1150 MHz to 1040/1400 MHz and it seems to be stable, with the temperature hovering around 77C. I ran the Heaven 4.0 benchmark for a solid 30 minutes and didn't see any graphical artifacts. I assume this is a good temperature for the GPU to hover at?

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH

Stock cooler aren't very good, it does not surprise me your CPU reached critical temp on a very stressing benchmark.

It's a bit ridiculous though that a product can't support itself the way it was sold. As long as the problem doesn't happen in real world use then I don't really care*. I don't need to run a CPU intensive benchmark again.

*And it hasn't happened in the 5 years I've had this PC.

My new PC won't give any video signal at all :( Neither on a 970 or the built-in GPU HDMI. It starts, all fans spin for fast, then slows down after a few secs, just as it's supposed to.

Asus Z97 AR
i7 4790k
Crucial Ballistix Tactical 1600Mhz (2x8Gb)
EVGA Supernova G2 750W 80+ Gold
2x Gigabyte 970 Windforce OC
Corsair H100i

But, the red MemOK LED on the Asus board is glowing solid red. The manual says to press the MemOK-button to test different timings so that it can boot, and that it restarts between each setting. I tried it once, and as soon as I pressed it, it rebooted once, then the LED started blinking very slowly, then it kept blinking faster and faster, until it went back to solid red again. No reboot though.

I've tried each RAM stick by itself, though only once. My old PC was picked up by the new owner while I was putting this together, otherwise I'd try those sticks first. Though my GF's PC has a stick of 8Gb DDR3, I'll test that later.

Also, I've tried switching the Ez XMP-switch on the motherboard as suggested in the manual, no dice.

Please, any ideas? I mean it shouldn't be a compatability issue with the RAM, right? It's pretty standard 1600Mhz RAM. Can both sticks really be dead (well yeah, of course they can, but christ what luck if they are..)..

Did you try booting with only a single GTX 970 installed and monitor attached to that GTX 970? How about booting without any graphics cards installed, plugged into motherboard video outputs? Make sure the water pump's CPU fan cable is plugged in?

If the memok is red, its probably your ram..

The fan connects directly to the power supply? Then yes. Plug the fan into the power supply, then follow this guide to turn on the power supply with a small piece of wire or metal. You don't need a switch, the person just decided to combine it with the bit of scrap wire.

Goes without saying - be careful.

Thanks, that's kinda what I had in mind. My ATX24-cable is all black though, so I can't find the correct pins by color. I'll go by this instead: http://pinouts.ru/Power/atx_v2_pinout.shtml

Pin 16 (PS ON) + Pin 15/17/18/19 (Ground)

This will be a good opportunity to test some fans and see (hear) how they sound before I start building!

I've tried with one 970 and none at all, just using the HDMI on the motherboard, still the same issue.

Yeah, but people seem to have had that LED come on even with working sticks of RAM. But I should definitely try a known working stick, will do as soon as i can.

I just puit an MX100 in my computer.
I can see it in BIOS and Device Manager, but not in computer?
Any ideas?

You need to partition and format it.

Open up Administrative Tools->Computer Management, then click on Disk Management and you should see the drive there. Right click it and partition it, then format it.

Ok, thanks.
Edit: got it sorted now, thanks a lot.

I think what threw me was the last time I put an SSD in my PC, I made it the C drive, completely forgot you have to format disks :V

Just replaced my old PSU with a brand new one in anticipation for my GTX 970 to arrive, and wow, my pc is so much quieter now, did not expect that to be a side benefit! Also, it is modular, so the amount of cables in my case has halved.

Just to make sure, is this the best way to install a new GPU?

1. Download latest drivers
2. Remove old drivers with Display driver uninstaller (shutdown option)
3. Remove old card and insert new one.
4. Start pc and install drivers.
5. Reboot.

My current card is also Nvida (latest drivers), but it is still needed to re-install the drivers, right?

Yep, just make sure after you uninstall the drivers you boot into safe mode and THEN run display driver uninstaller. If you're sticking with nvidia it might still be a good idea to do the whole reinstall process just to be on the safe side... I know I would.

I don't know for sure if it's "needed" but it's safer either way. What's your PSU by the way ?

When I put in my first 970 I did the whole uninstall drivers, replace card, install drivers thing, etc etc. But after I RMA'd it, I just popped my 660 back in without messing with drivers and everything was fine. When I got my replacement 970 I just threw that in and everything was still fine. Nvidia's unified drivers are great. I wouldn't sweat it too much either way.

Curious to know if Samsung sorted the slow read/write speeds on the 840 Evo. I noticed the 256GB model is priced less than the MX100 so I'm leaning towards Samsung.

I finally managed to get my displayport issues fixed last night. New build is up and running, and Steam is downloading and installing some games. I am excited to get home.

I need to install some more utilities and drivers though.

I was a little freaked out when I first booted up my machine yesterday. I didn't realize the Asus Strix GTX970 didn't spin up the fans until it was under load. Though I'd either installed it wrong or got a bad card at first.

Nice, just got my 500GB 840 EVO from Newegg a day earlier than anticipated.

It came with the free Far Cry 4 code, which I figured would just be emailed, but nope, they sent a physical code printed on a card in a nice little Far Cry themed envelope.

Nice! I was really close to getting that one. Went with the M500 instead though. Amazon is failing on my M500 delivery unfortunately. My guaranteed delivery date is tomorrow but it still hasn't shipped. This may be the first time I complain. Prime is $100 a year now and Thursday was 3 days to begin with.

I spent the last two days prepping my computer too. Backed up my mechanical to my 1TB external (took 16 hours lol), grabbed Win 8.1 and made a list of all the apps to reinstall along with my configs. Now just need the drive.

Whelp, just bought the Enthoo Luxe, so now all my parts are either here or en route.

I was planning on just upgrading some stuff on my old, 6 year old computer, but I basically ended up building an entirely new computer. Couldn't help it. I came in at a good price though, found some great deals. Didn't have to get new storage, optical drives or power supply, though.

Notes:
* Already bought an SSD storage so didn't include one.
* Will get the case from local store and I have no need for a DVD writer.
* Rebates are useless to me so the actual price is more like $1180.
* I want to connect this PC to the internet by Ethernet and WiFi, will I need to add a card?
* Really have no idea if the parts have compatibility issues or why I listed this GTX 970 instead of others. Even the power supply and the cpu cooler I have no idea about them. Just listed them cause I heard good things about them.

Thank you! I'm not really good with all this stuff and this will be my first build. I can spend a little extra. I just want it to be ready to go when I put it all together. Are the fans to keep this cool included in the build, or are they on the graphics card ect? If I need extra cooling to make sure it will be good, I'll get it now.

You don't really need any extra cooling. The case comes with 2 fans preinstalled, the graphics card also comes with fans. The CPU comes with the stock cooler; as RGM79 pointed out, if you want somewhat better CPU cooling, you can add a Hyper 212 Evo for around $30.
