Wonder if Shulk is the best Smash Run character because he can adjust to Run/Climb on a whim.
Pretty much. Also important is Monado Speed/Jump letting you sweep the map looking for chests and doors faster in the early game when you don't have much speed/jump boosts.

My brother is a Wario main (mained him in Brawl too) so I know all too well about the horrors of being picked off in the air via the waft, haha.

Remember in Brawl when the half-charged waft was had even more KO power than the half-charged waft? Good times.
I think it's the opposite in this game. I noticed a half charged waft dealt more damage in this game but not as much knockback as a full one. Need to check it out on training.

Also my favorite thing about the new Wario: wheelie kills. Sooo satisfying to land.

I have no idea how to play. Literally just mashing buttons right now. Never played a smash game before.

Can someone point me in the direction of a tutorial that can show me how to play the right way? Good beginner characters, etc?

Also, here's this for once you get the hang of the controls and feel like moving on to deeper, character-specific stuff: a Mario breakdown.

You have two buttons to attack: One button is for normal attacks, and another button is for special attacks. You can modify these attacks with different directions, at different times.

For example: Most characters can hit once, twice, three times by simply standing in place and hitting the normal attack. If you run and hit the normal attack while running, they'll do a dash attack. If you push forward and hit the normal attack, they'll do one attack. Tap up and attack, and they'll do another. Tap down and attack, and they'll do yet another.

Same when in the air: Tap attack while free-falling to do one move; push forward and attack while in the air to do another; push back and attack while in the air to do another; and so on. Different moves have different properties. For example, some characters can launch airborne enemies downward by jumping above them and tapping down and attack.

The more damage one takes, the farther they'll fly when hit. If you hold toward the stage when hit yourself, you'll reduce your knockback and survive longer!

You can charge moves on the ground, which is called a Smash Attack. Thrust left, right, down or up and HOLD that direction while tapping the attack button. Your character will flash, charging up. When you release, you'll hit with huge power and knockback.

As for special moves, these are moves like Mario's fireball (neutral special), cape (forward + special), watergun (down + special) and coin punch (up + special). Most characters can jump twice, and use their up special for a "third jump" that helps them make it back to the stage. So when you're knocked off the stage, jump once, jump twice, then use your up special to get back to the stage.

Also, you can use the shoulder buttons to create a bubble shield that blocks most hits. You can grab others in this state by tapping attack. They can also grab you when you're shielding. Once you grab someone, you can tap left, right, up or down to throw them in that direction. While in your bubble, you can also roll left and right by tapping in that direction. This allows you to safely dodge attacks. And in the air, you can tap the shoulder button to dodge there, as well.

These are just some beginners' tips, applicable to most characters. I hope it helps! There's also a tutorial video on the title screen, if you just wait a moment when you first boot up the game.

Yeah, Shulk's really fun to use in Smash Run because of that.

I also enjoy Robin, because having strong projectiles really helps.

well, starting with Mario is always a good idea, he's the "Ryu" of Smash, basically.

and I think the tutorial video of Brawl makes a very good job explaining the basics. They are still the same.

WOW just what I needed! Thank you!

This game is clearly incredibly popular. It's sold out everywhere in my local area, big city.

So I just looked through a full trophy list and I noticed Nintendogs has more trophies than Yoshi, Shulk, Wario, Duck Hunt, and ROB. Clearly we need to cut all these third-rate characters to make room for a truly deserving playable Nintendog. Nintendogs already even has 1 stage up on all those characters except Shulk.

I definitely think one of the reasons Duck Hunt was added is Sakurai really wanted "Nintendog" (as mentioned in Brawl alongside Villager as being ones that wouldn't really work), but couldn't really use a normal dog, so went with the...uh...original "Nintendog".

I don't think that's the case at all. Reason being, Duck Hunt's moves are all so unique to light-gun games, and I have to imagine that style of play was the "seed" of Duck Hunt's character.

However, I do like how Sakurai acknowledges Duck Hunt as the "original Nintendog" by depicting him in the Living Room stage. :-D

I can believe this if the dog gets good treatment on the Wii U version, like a stage and an original medley.

Okay. So I've now accidentally killed myself with Greninja four or five times by accidentally sticking to the edge of a stage and them being unable to jump back up. Dumb.

Tell me about it. You cannot break the 9.0 Classic Mode panel either. Sakurai is the devil indeed.
Is it 9.0 with every character?

Edit: Ok, good. That would be ridiculous. 9.0 with someone isn't horrible, though I haven't quite managed it yet. Lost once and ended up at 8.5. The difficult challenges aren't the worst, it's the time consuming and repetitive ones imo. Like doing All Star with every character.

There's something inherently humorous about mirror match Greninja both using shadow sneak at exactly the same time causing it to look like both just switched places, such ninja trickery.

Hitting Mega Man's spike is my favorite thing ever.

I remember in one hard fought match against a Mario player I jumped out perfectly and fired the hard knuckle with glee in my eyes, a glorious victory was soon to be mine.
Except Mario can apparently cape the thing back upwards which killed me, IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE MY MOMENT!

I am so terrible at this game, but I can't help but be impressed with the people that aren't. I can't play without feeling like I'm fighting against the controls the entire time (oh the times I've tried to up B but up Y'd instead, for example), so it's actually kind of cool to see people who are able to use the shoulder buttons correctly and actually shield and roll to avoid attacks and then punish. Just played a guy that I beat when he used Robin and someone else, but then he swapped to Greninja and pretty much dominated me.

Luckily no. Classic and All-Star is though...

Sakurai is simply weeding out the weaklings. They say if you complete all 3 challenge boards he will personally appear at your doorstep and challenge you to a smash (2 minute time with items on FFA with 2 CPU's, obviously), and if you win, he'll tell you anything you want to know about the Wii U version.

I can't count how many times I've lost a stock because it interpreted my Up+B as a Side+B and vice versa.

This was happening to me a lot earlier. Less in recent matches, I don't know if I've corrected it or what.

Circle pad sucks for Smash almost as much as these shoulder buttons.

Is it just me or is Mario not that bad? I've definitely played him the most because of the demo, but I was surprised to win one of my For Glory matches (3 W 12 L) using Mario. Do I just suck at using everyone else?
