Week of August 25th to the 31st, 2014.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread. An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at enzo_gt!

What fighting games do you currently play, what is your all time favourite and why?
Not currently playing any fighting games as I've lent away my 360 and my PC graphics card is dying, but most recently I've been playing Soul Calibur V with my cousin because that's the only game he likes and can beat me in.

All time favourite is really difficult. It's either MvC2 or MvC3. I think I'd edge MvC2, simply because the first time I saw it being played I was just enamoured and had to stop and ask someone what the fuck am I watching and why is it so beautiful? I didn't even know MvC was a thing, and came out of that with a new love for fighting games and many of the IPs in that game.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
My favourite mechanic has to be the super. Not a new mechanic by any means, but supers are just so damn satisfying, both in games where they are easy to build up to, and games where you have to be more frugal with meter
but not in SCV
. Building up to a very powerful, flashy attack to unleash is a very simple goal and dynamic to add to combat but an effective one.

My least favourite mechanic has to be combo breakers. I don't like the effect they have on match flow and how they only really exist to compensate for problems caused by other mechanics (such as long combos or hitstun), while also introducing new problems in the process.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
I used to rent games for my Genesis because my parents thought why rent when you can buy, including SFII and UMK3. That sort of planted the seeds for later when I discovered MvC2, and even later for when the news dropped out of nowhere that SFIV was coming. All the nostalgia channeled itself into excitement for the revival of SF (and later, MvC), which then exposed me to the FGC. From there, it's history.

I play a ton of different genres of games, pretty much everything but sports games. Outside of the odd Strategy game like Civ and AoE, I tend to gravitate towards FPS and Racing games for the most part.
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
It would probably be Sakura from SF. It's hard to describe her appeal, because I tend to generally hate most characters with similar, young, japanese schoolgirl aesthetics (as well as the idea of clone characters). I like how she is the understudy to Ryu; pretty much all she wants to do is get better at fighting, and wants to embark on a journey just like his as well. I also like the little things like how her style is a quirky version of the style she looks up to, but doesn't really have all the discipline that Ryu does. And there's no real cliche sexual tension or anything. For the most part.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
I would say my style of play is a mix of baiting and reactionary. The most satisfying thing to me is catching your opponent slipping or off-guard as it gives me a sort of intellectual high, so I keep doing that even though it's probably not the most reliable thing to revolve your entire game around. When my opponent feels they're in control, I usually just wait for them to fuck up instead and try to react.

Most of the time I play fighting games, I'm running long sets with a single friend or cousin or grinding in Marvel training mode.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
My biggest strength is probably my ability to anticipate what the opponent is about to do. I can usually see through people's game plans or how they want to approach me next even if I'm usually not able to counteract it properly.

My biggest weakness is execution. I drop everything, and even after hours and hours of practice, but more disappointingly I can't seem to break execution barriers that are important to overcome for all of the characters I am interested in playing (Iron Man, Sakura, etc.).
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
Best moment has to be attending Toryuken, my first IRL tournament. Really, there is nothing like the actual tournament atmosphere. You can be sitting at home and having fun watching all the tournament hijinks but nothing compares to talking to other cool people who you just met that share your hobby, someone you don't even know offering to help teach you Skullgirls, or getting hype over finals with a crowd.

Worst moment has to be going 0-2 at Toryuken. Kind of affirmed that I wouldn't be able to put enough time practicing/playing fighting games to compete competitively and work my way up to beloved FGC personality/commentator.
What do you want from future fighting games?
I want fighting games to learn from other genres, and FG publishers to begin taking the risks necessary to take the genre to the next level. This primarily means bigger budgets or a new megapublisher entering the game, but entails a lot of the more specific things that would be required, including: creating new IPs, extended developer support on-par with MOBAs and FPSs, in-depth tutorials that go much further than even the best examples today, designing modes and marketing games in a format that encourages people to try it out instead of back down from a genre stigma, etc.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
My good friend DryEyeRelief. If not, Horseress.

If you have any suggestions for the OP, please do not hesitate to post in this thread or PM me to let me know.

Unfortunately, not really. There are times when people bring up the topic, but I don't see a ton of fundamentals and footsies discussion in this thread (as opposed to tech).

Left to right, hard to easy to use.

Up to Down, good to bad.
So Elizabeth is really bad, and really hard to use? :-/

My good friend DryEyeRelief.
So much good will here.

Pretty much. Her defense is awful because of her garbage DP and Guard Cancel (her normals aren't too bad though). Her pressure games isn't as easy as other characters. I'd say her combos take some work as well. The only good thing she has going is damage still.

do you guys talk about any version of SF prior to SF4? does this thread contain any useful information of that sort? if you guys have any questions regarding stuff like footsies or just general tactics in certain matchups maybe i can be of some use in that area.

this thread is just random fgc stuff, but posts like that are always welcome (at least by me)

I feel like developers are psychic, and they consistently design the character that appeals to me to take a ton of work compared to others while offering less return. -_-

Still, I plan on buying P4AU. At the very least, it will keep me tided over until Smash U. I am so pumped for this winter/spring:
P4AU
Smash
GG Xrd
(probably) new BB

Lots of stuff to look forward to (but BB only if Nine gets in).

the skull girls button mechanics are interesting. I like the punch->kick, low - high flow of comboes, which allow you to make custom comboes on the fly.

i cant believe i didnt pick that up before, and it honestly feels good. i wonder how other fighting games would be like if they implement that

The only thing I don't like about it is the character-specific launchers. I feel like MvC3 inputs were a step forward from MvC2, and Skullgirls is frustratingly the only 8 button fighter around. Yeah, technically it's 6, but everyone uses 8. Even Duckator hotkeys his assists. I wouldn't mind Skullgirls 2 swapping to MvC3 inputs to improve the learning curve.

My hype for Smash is mostly reserved for everything else it provides instead of it's fighting aspects. Just waiting for Shulk to finally be confirmed so I can make the jump.

I want to get back into Skullgirls but I feel so behind without the PC version in my life. Shit sucks. :/

It's still early, I'm on westcoast been busy playing Ys. What's up?

What characters do you use/do you have any experience with Amane?

That magic series was introduced in Vampire Hunter or which ever came and was in the versus series as well. (at least until MvC2 when you had to hit L twice to get to M strength attacks)

When the Eliza patch comes out, I'll be doing a long play session to test team combinations if you want in. I'm still 50/50 on including her on my team, but my Double is so atrocious that I should probably make the move anyway.

Nope, still up in the air. But made more complicated by the fact that so many people are pretending to be the leaker since it came from an anonymous 4chan poster.

You should try Melty Blood and UNIEL. Basically any order works as long as the normal hasn't been used.

Makes for creative pressure and scary frame traps.

As mentioned before, that list is made by YMST. He's kind of a god player in the fact he has been a top player for 3 different chars. It's pretty agreeable, Yosuke bove Yu is eh but hes definitely strong as hell. SLab is mad underrated though, that's just a Japan thing.

Since I won't have the money for P4U2, I'm considering on choosing a strong character at the start.
Obviously there's Narukami that I currently use, but I'm still considering Persona Sho.

Ever since my "that one character" was confirmed not playable, I've been in this weird place where I just want the time between that revelation and the game's release to gtfo my way so I can finally play this game and draw my own conclusions. I realize I'm playing the optimist again, especially considering the design decisions in the previous game and considering how much of a coin flip it is to believe that all of the criticisms of the demo would reach the right ears at the right time when we can't see updated builds beyond the one made for E3 (which was made in January apparently), but I just can't go another 5 - 6 years without my series man.

Do you not have the PC version of Skullgirls or is it that you can't run it?

Oh man Enzo, that was probably the most jerkish post I've see you do hahaha "my good friend DryEyeRelief"

I'm surprised none of the gaffers here have written a fanfic about you two and how Deckard Cain and Dahbomb are up for competition.
I only kid DB, I know you hate Deckard's guts.

Plus, who the hell recommended we move to community? Depending on the person, I might have to show them a thing or two...
While I duck away after making this comment.
