Biggest crow a developer has served this past gen?

naw.

i mean some people probably enjoyed it, but no crow was served. it turned out exactly how intelligent critics of the direction thought it would, shallow and inferior gameplay that relied entirely on aesthetic to impress. sales reflected that too.

I'm guessing you are one of those intelligent critics

Yeah, Wii success.

What they thought would happen to Wii obviously didn't happen because the Wii conquered a new market.(Apparantly not many people saw that coming)
But what they said would happen to Wii is now happening to WiiU.

And yeah, you keep moving goalposts.

Definitely the Wii

What's happening to WiiU is the fault of Nintendo's initial message and the media's lack of investigation.
I can google that the WiiU is a new machine, but news outlets can't take two seconds to do the same to give the masses the correct info like they do for Apple and the many versions of iPhones and iPads.

i think i remember people hating on Bayonetta simply because of the trailers. Game turned out amazing.

That game was supremely shitty though. The combat, writing and quests were F2P korean MMO tier.

That might be the consensus in Lalaland, but here, in this world, reactions to the game are very much on the other end of the spectrum.

Edit:

I remember you, now. Really shouldn't've bothered.

To be fair its super disappointing to see such an awesome opportunity ruined by deplorable combat.

Deplorable? I would love to know where you guys come up with this stuff.

2nd edit:

I'd pay 200 for this game if it had a Platinum Games combat system.

Okaaaaaay, then. Probably shouldn't take you seriously, either.

well it was supposed to revitalize the brand and be ninja theory's breakout title. So I'd imagine a portion of the press and NT fan base got a huge helping of crow. So large that cvg couldn't choke it down.

When people talked about DmC they can be so actively hostile, it's mind-boggling.

Wii Sports/Wii Fit seem like the obvious choices on consoles. Nintendogs was the clear winner on traditional handhelds; I distinctly remember the reactions to Famitsu's 40/40 review, and then the game went on to be one of the best selling games of the generation.

I think Angry Birds and Farmville also absolutely qualify.

You had a pretty good argument until you mentioned Famitsu. :)

I know it's early, but Destiny.

Shoot, I recall people saying the same thing: "The game looks generic" or "the game looks like it's going to be boring." After playing the Alpha, I had so much fun playing that, and I can't wait for the game in September.

Mirrors Edge and EA has got to be up there.

Right when EA was getting the most shit ... their stock had plummeted since 2005, they were releasing shit games at the start of this generation, killed and abandoned many developers and franchises...

And then out of nowhere, they release a forward thinking non-violent first person game that people are still talking about today and desperate for a sequel. Good job EA.

Forza Horizon, at first most people though it would be a cheap cash in.

THis too.

Oh, and yeah, whoever said the Wii. Jesus Christ, how could I forget. I didn't think the WIi stood any damn chance at all... and damn those sales

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a pretty big one. The original game is held to an impossibly high standard by the PC elite, and HR is the sequel to the almost universally reviled Invisible War. But it turned out pretty great in the end.

This is one I didn't remember but yeah, pre-release a lot of my friends talked shit about it constantly. Especially after that really shit first teaser.

Once the media copy leaked out the reverse in hype was insane.

Still one of my favourite games last generation.

Not the biggest, but definitely Batman: AA for me. It was game that got people's attention with the animated series voice cast but the artstyle was being thrown some serious shade, The Dark Knight had just come out and that was all anyone wanted it seemed. Regardless, I don't think many people thought it was going to be that good let alone one of the biggest game franchises of last / this gen.

This is the biggest and most indisputable one that I experienced firsthand. Even after the demo (with the sneaking around) there were people saying they weren't hopeful. I still think a lot of the acclaim came from it not sucking, especially because of how simple/repetitive it was. Still good though

I'm blown away by the Wii answers/articles posted above. I wasn't following gaming news back then and everyone I knew loved one of the Wii Sports minigames, and the people who were already into games were looking forward to inevitable Zelda/Mario/Etc. games.

You mean after Super Mario 3DWorld

that October trailer thread was amazing, general consensus changed in one day
Ahh yes, that is another good one. Double Helix did it right as well for Xone's launch game. It's a bit silly not to think Mario won't be excellent IMO, but it happens. I'm a bit burned out on it since I've been playing the same franchise since I started gaming, but each game will still feel fresh and end up being a great game.

I think the gameplay is very boring and if it were made by someone like Platinum, a developer who knows how to develop an engaging and rewarding combat syste, it could be a big hit. I'm strictly talking about gameplay and its a pipe dream. Really Monolith has to crate am engaging combat system because if they did they'd have a system seller on their hands.

Has anyone mentioned Mario Kart 8?

When it was revealed last year, many thought it would be a 'meh' game. But after some great previews and trailers this year, MK8 started to gain serious attention, and right now, it is the fastest selling Wii U title yet, and is one of the critically-acclaimed game in the Mario Kart franchise.

Xenoblade has my favorite combat system of any RPG. Fine, you didn't care for it, maybe you didn't look too deeply into the systems, maybe it just didn't click, but you are definitely suffering from a lethal dose of hyperbole

Dude, it's an RPG, not a flipping action game. Secondly, it's meant to be an evolution of the turn-based combat system that allows for greater player agency, and within that frame, it does what it's supposed to very well. Thirdly, it's a JRPG not named "Tales of" or Final Fantasy; it's relegated to a niche by that fact alone (and turning its battle system into an action one wouldn't change jack shit - that's projection on your part).

I think I should probably stop here. From what I've seen of your posts on the game, you've completely misinterpreted it and are now disparaging it because of that.

P.S.: you ought to look up the sales data of Platinum's portfolio if you think they make big sellers.

I ate crow on Bulletstorm. I thought it would be a juvenile, unfunny, derivative FPS. I was terribly, terribly wrong and I was glad to be.

?
You got three out of four right.

Yea, I'm definitely going to have to go with this. Considering their last game was Urban Chaos, I thought it was going to be a licensed piece of junk.

Speaking of which, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was a game that I thought was going to be a crappy movie tie in.

I'd say Sonic Generations was announced at the peak of the masses totally getting the message about the Sonic Cycle. You had to have been one of the 14 year old furry Sonic fans to not be incredibly cynical about its announcement.

Then it turns out it was one of the best Sonic games since the Genesis.

My reaction to the Wii reveal: "Wow, this REALLY isn't for me."
My reaction to the Wii: "Wow, this REALLY isn't for me."

Demon's Souls

I remembered when it was first announced on Famitsu shortly before TGS 2008. Most thought it looked like crap because looked like a Japanese developer trying to make an Wrpg like oblivion.

The TGS previews didn't fare well either since the game was plagued with technical issues. Heck, even Yoshida didn't have any confidence in the title. It didn't help that Demon's Souls wasn't a suitable game to demonstrate to people who could only play for 10-15 mins.

Then came the release in 2009. Sony was smart enough to make an Engrish version for the Asian market. Initial Impressions were positive and slowly, the good word of mouth caused many to import resulting in severe shortages from most Asian import sites.

Then Atlus announced the US release and it was all history.

Thinking back, 2009 was a great year for PS3 owners.

Mirror's Edge.

I still remember the early reactions at GameFAQs. "A First-Person platformer? What the hell is this crap?"

Now the first thing anyone asks EA is "When is ME2 coming out?"

Oh, and it amazes me that DmC still has so many defenders this long after it flopped.

You don't see the irony in that last sentence after talking about Mirror's Edge?

P-100, before it was announced as Wonderful101, most people were disappointed that the Director/Creator of hard hitting action games like Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil 2, etc.. was releasing an exclusive to the Wii-U that turned out to be a game that could only be described at first glance as "kiddie"

Out of any developer, Kamiya had the expertise to bring the hardcore to Nintendo, so seeing a game, at first glance, be the opposite of that set some people back looking for Nintendo's fortunes to turn around.

The reactions were low until we got the E3 play through and later the official W101 trailer showing off the scope of the game.
Project P-100 (Nintendo/Platinum Games) announced for WiiU [Director: Hideki Kamiya]

Holy crap this is by far the kiddiest offering Nintendo has ever had.

Nintendo is seriously misjudging the marketing, they are screwed....

Never change, DragonSworne.
