Biggest crow a developer has served this past gen?

Being inferior to its predecessors and selling worse than all of them qualifies as serving crow now?
People were certain the game would be pure & utter shit, but it ended up being a good game. Not necessarily on par with the depth of DMC3 or anything, not even close, but still a very adequate action game.

And yeah, I'd say Demon's Souls is the biggest one. It's not too much of an exaggeration to say that absolutely NO ONE expected the game to be good. It looked like an extremely shitty & janky game with one of the worst cases of greybrownitis of any game ever the first time they showed it and people were laughing at how Sony was spending time on such a shitty looking game when they were trying to win back some of the customers that the high price etc. had lost for PS3. Then it went on to become this cult-ish classic that is now a reference point for a lot of games much in the same way timeless classics like Super Metroid and the like are.

As many others have said, Batman: AA.

Before release: "Oh, another licenced game from some no-name dev."

After release: My personal GOTG.

Close behind is Splinter Cell: Blacklist. Nobody believed anything Ubisoft said after Conviction and that abysmal first preview, but the game turned out way better than even the most optimistic people here expected.

We did? I got the impression that pretty much all of GAF were pretty excited about it.

The same with XCOM:EU. The response to the unveiling of that game was an OMG!!! from most people.
The only OMG for the game at first was just the announcement that Kamiya was doing an exclusive for Nintendo.

P-100 before it was announced as Wonderful101, most people were disappointed that the Director/Creator of hard hitting action games like Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil 2, etc.. was releasing an exclusive to the Wii-U that turned out to be a game that could only be described at first glance as "kiddie"

The reactions were low until we got the E3 play through and later the official W101 trailer showing off the scope of the game.
Project P-100 (Nintendo/Platinum Games) announced for WiiU [Director: Hideki Kamiya]

GAF always gushes over Platinum Games though, regardless of the system or genre. They are a forum favourite along with Obsidian.

We do now because of the crow we ate.

We never doubt again!

Fuse

Insomniac served themselves

Jstevenson had to make the thread to announce them going multiplat because nobody cared, rofl

Most of these are not major crow. Wii Sports and Wii Fit seem like the definitive "crow" moments of the gen. Nintendo pulled the rug out and soaked up 95% of the profit last gen or so...

For me it was Max Payne 3. The sequel to one of my favorite games ever and its excellent successor? Bald Max Payne, living in Brazil as a bodyguard, roaming the slums in broad daylight? No rain nor snow? Basically nothing that made a Max Payne game a Max Payne game?

My expectations couldn't be lower. And because of that, I couldn't be more happy to be wrong and realize it was the best TPS I had played in quite a long time, and completely worthy of its title.

I don't quite get this one.

Didn't they release a demo like a month before the game came out that had everyone dancing in the aisles?

People were PUMPED for Asylum before it launched.

I think it was before the demo and later previews. There was the usual "it's a licenced game, but it might actually be good" stuff coming from early impressions, but I think a lot of people didn't take much notice as we'd heard it all before.

Mirror's Edge.

I still remember the early reactions at GameFAQs. "A First-Person platformer? What the hell is this crap?"

Now the first thing anyone asks EA is "When is ME2 coming out?"

Oh, and it amazes me that DmC still has so many defenders this long after it flopped.

Eh, it's ultimately subjective but I still legitimately think DmC was the worst game I personally played in 2013. The gameplay stripped a ton of things from the DMC formula, contributed nothing new in place of any of that, and the story/writing was stunningly awful.

It was one of my favourites of the year I had loads of fun with it. I'm clearly an idiot or something... *shrugs*

This is one of the ones I was going to mention. Bulletstorm got so much shit prior to its release because the advertisements for that game made it seem like nothing but grade-school humor and insults. They did a terrible job at actually showing off the gameplay, which ended up being a ton of fun. I really don't think most people would have expected to see that game sitting at about an 80% at Metacritic today.

Crackdown is another big one. Most people dismissed it as a way to get to the Halo demo. Then they had some time to kill prior to the demo and holy cow, Crackdown was actually really good! I wanted the game half because of the Halo demo and half because it actually looked fun. It ended up being one of the best games released on the Xbox 360 and remains one of my favorite titles to this day.

More recently, Wolfenstein takes the cake. It didn't get much in the way of good promo prior to release. I wasn't much looking forward to it simply because I didn't much care for the previous entries in the franchise that I had played. Then I received my review copy and wow, I was insanely impressed by what I was playing. I never would have expected a Wolfenstein game to play as well as that nor have a story that I actually gave a damn about.

All of this post is correct

People are talking about before that; when the first shots and other material came out I recall the game being treated as a complete joke with things like the bulky art being mocked. Then people actually got to play it and realised it was legit. Sort of like a less protracted version of Human Revolution's turnaround.

Where does this expression come from, "eating crow" ? I'm only seeing it on Neogaf and it came around about two years ago, maybe ?

The second trailer of Super Mario 3D World was probably one of the most massive crow servings I've ever witnessed on GAF.

EDIT: Ah, noticed thread meant past gen.

It's origin actually lies with Game of Thrones and the book fans
The Wild people have a saying about how to admit defeat is to eat a Crow because they taste awful.
Of course one tribe took it literally and they love eating crows i.e. the Night's Watch

Two gens ago it was Wind Waker. Last gen I dunno, nothing comes to mind right away. Maybe batman Arkham asylum since every superhero game before its release was utter shit.

Demon's souls would be probably be my pick. I mean Sony even admitted it was a stupid idea not to localize it themselves. And i believe Yoshida himself he didnt like the game at first because he died so easily? Only for him to later admit it was a great game when he actually played it.

huh? Tomb Raider ended up being just as shitty as we expected if not a little worse. None of the concerns people had going into it were proven wrong in any way. It selling well and appealing to game reviewers was never in doubt.
Well you certainly don't speak for everyone.

Deus ex HR is the main one, noone expected anything from it but it turned out pretty well.

Dragon's dogma perhaps too, looked like some lame wanabe monster hunter from early footage but turned out to be the best action rpg of the entire console generation.

For me Tomb raider 2013, looked like a qte setpiece infested uncharted clone, but the qtes went away after the opening section and in the end it was a much better game than uncharted.
It has some of the best graphics of any pc game too.

Splinter Cell Blacklist gets my vote. I really was down on this one until I actually got to play it. Now, it's perhaps one of my favorite Stealth-Action games.

Those Grim missions are so goddamn infuriating and fun at the same time. The only thing that prevents it from being a classic are excellent maps equivalent to the ones in Conviction's Deniable Ops mode(The only genuinely good thing about that game) .

I thought this game only existed so they could sell you a Halo 3 Beta.

Ended up being better than Halo 3 and some of the most pure fun I had all generation.

I remember before that game came out some people (specifically 1up's staff) were saying "Y'know what? I think that Crackdown game might be really good."

Have you played any F2P Korean MMOs?

Why am I bothering to respond to this bait?

Almost assuredly more than you ever have, and I will tell you right now that Xenoblade's combat wishes it would be anywhere near as engaging as some of the better F2P Korean MMOs out there.

Yeah, now that you mention it, that makes more sense.

Deadly Premonition

Went from $20 shovelware,
to joke game that's "so bad it's good,"
to genuinely great.

Nice pull.

DP tied with RDR for my GOTY 2010.

Borderlands - I remember a lot of strife about the change in art styles and hate for the cel shading. Mostly forgotten because of how quickly it became a hit and people forgot the issues, but I remember.

Saint's Row - we were making fun of it right up until the first demo and we realized "oh shit, this isn't really GTA at all, it's just a bunch of stupid fun".

Last Gen:

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time: I remember how this went from "looks just as bad as the Pitfall remake, give up on 80s arcade games people!" to winning Game of Show at E3 and becoming a sleeper hit.

Killzone 2. From a mediocre first game, to the infamous 05 trailer, the comeback was a gritty and unique shooter that will always have a place among the GOAT lists of the genre. The perfect example of the anti-Cod game, a beacon that came out in a time when most were trying to replicate the rising CoD success with tons of generic clones. (even GG fell victim with the sequel).

Cool to hear some F2P Korean MMOs out there actually do have combat worth talking about then.

Dude, don't bother. I've seen him do this already, if he's in a thread and he sees Xenoblade mentioned in some sort of positive light, he will make sure to express how much he dislikes the game. It's no use trying to argue because he already has his mind made up. The game just isn't for him.

Yeah probably God Of War 3 or Killzone 2, Killzone 2 deserved the scepticism, though.

This gen I'd say it'll be that graphics capabilities of next gen consoles.
We had a lot of crappy rushed cross gen ports running on last gen engines so far and I think that lead to people massively underestimating what these consoles are capable off.
I foresee a lot of people eating crow when Uncharted 4 drops.

To be fair its super disappointing to see such an awesome opportunity ruined by deplorable combat.
