I thought the sequel was a lot better than the first and that's saying something considering the first movie is like the "Hard Boiled" of Martial arts movies for me. ( hell they even had a guy named Mad Dog in it)
I hate myself for not noticing the mad dog shout out.

It can't possibly be worse than the original, so why the fuck not.

First mistake. I don't want to see a martial arts movie full of white guys with six months of training, I want motherfuckers who've been backflipping since before they could walk and don't mind throwing a spinning kick nine hundred times to get the shot perfect.

Seriously, this is gonna be the movies big problem. Nobody is watching The Raid for the plot, nobody is watching any Hemsworth brothers for their fighting chops. It's just a bad combination.

The Raid Remake Will Feature "A Clash of Fighting Styles"
Director reveals story and casting plans for U.S. remake.

For the uninitiated, The Raid: Redemption is a martial arts masterpiece set in Jakarta, Indonesia starring Iko Uwais. There's bloodcurdling brutality in the movie and one of the best fight scenes ever filmed. Of course Hollywood will remake it.

The remake was part of the international distribution deal IIRC. The Raid was excellent, but unfortunatly, it's harder and harder for non-Hollywood movies to break through to an international audience as cinemas and theatres are more invested in programming the same shit over and over again. Shame, The Raid was one of the best actionmovies I've seen in a good while.

They're going to have to make the same risks if they want to even get close to the same quality of fighting and you sure as hell know they're not crazy enough to do it.

Dat first post, nope.

This movie needs a remake even less. Although maybe it would reduce the amount of martial arts and included more shooting. I actually preferred those parts in the movie, but I doubt they would do it justice.

Ah well, I like balls to the wall action movies, maybe it'll turn out ok, but I'll keep my expectations in check.

I always get the feeling for these kinds of movies that half the people who defend them to the death only like them because Rotten Tomatoes told them to.

Or maybe, just a thought ofcourse, people actually love the movie?

Could that be a possibility ?

I really liked The Raid and I see no reason to remake it, other than money. Just watch it with subtitles on. I hope they learned from Oldboy, that remake was totally unnecessary and didn't that flop hard?

Meh. I'd like to see another take on it. The original movie didn't have some amazing history\story that needs to be preserved. Nothing does really (because who gives a shit) but this even less so.

another take on what? There wasn't any story that needs a western spin. There was literally only the action. Any remake is pointless unless the fight scenes are literally remade shot-for-shot like the original. I just don't see how you'd recapture the sheer kineticism of the original. Yes I think I made that word up.

The only way it could work is if they get Scott Adkins to play the lead. Gareth Evans wants him and Michael Jai White and I pray the studio has enough brains to listen to him.

Camera shaking intensifies. It's going to suck. First, they are going to add plot to the movie and it is only going to be in the way of action. Second, they cast people who are not martial artists and their lack of skills will be hidden via shaky cam and odd camera angles.

The issue that I have with this kind of remake is that here you have this great film with great actors, yet instead of championing that they decide to take it and "westernize" it. The Raid: Redemption is only a couple years old, there is no need for a remake other than making it more "palatable" to western audiences.

What do you mean "championing"? And who is "they"?

Good. As much as I loved the first movie, the second one is a mess comparatively. Did NOT need to be two and a half hours long, good lord.

I agree personally. It was a great action movie but it was needlessly fluffy. But I don't agree that it's disappointment financially is a good thing. I know you didn't mean it that way but it came off weird.

another take on what?
Kicking ass.

I think an action movie is always better with characters and stories you actually care about... so it's not like there is absolutely no room for improvement.

Sounds like you are more interested in a Drama/thriller with some action in it? Keep my martial arts films pure and wacky.

Misread it as remaking Raid with the expendable a cast, that would of been great.

Okay, THAT I could get excited about! I'd be so there day one for that movie.

As for an American remake of The Raid, sure whatever, go ahead and make it. I own my blu ray of The Raid and I'll soon own it's sequel, and I'll always have them and cherish them, so go ahead Hollywood and do your best. If it's decent I'll see it, if not then I won't be surprised either. I mean it's not like I'm expecting much from this stupid endeavor....

That would be awesome especially for MJW who has been severely overlooked by Hollywood.

Or do it the Matrix way and get actors onboard who know they'll be expected to train properly and rigorously.

It was Yuen Woo Ping who had his own condition, and that was that the directors would guarantee that their cast train long hours to learn kungfu and wire work. "That's a big request," remark the brothers, "How do you tell an actor that they're going to have to spend four months training and learning kungfu when they could make another movie in that same time? That's what impressed us about Keanu. He understood why it was necessary and the dedication it required. In fact, the whole cast has amazed us with their dedication to the training regime - it's been incredibly rigorous."

Keanu, Lawrence, Carrie-Anne and Australian star Hugo Weaving all trained for four months before shooting the film in Australia, mostly in an obscure warehouse north of Hollywood, in Burbank. I was lucky to have the opportunity to visit the group on several occasions, watch the training and stunt sequences, and chat with Woo Ping, Keanu, Lawrence and more of the cast and Hong Kong stunt crew.

Watching the process was, well, history, at least a part of film history. The cast was undergoing rigorous training in kungfu and wirework, while at the same time Woo Ping was choreographing fights and action sequences, video camera in hand, experimenting with angles and techniques. At lunch he would watch the footage and make improvements. Sometimes, if the actors had worked extra hard, they got to watch a Hong Kong action film too.

All that training was up there on the screen and looked fantastic with no need for camera shake as the actors knew what they were doing. I hope we could see the same sort of dedication in any remake of the Raid. If they had to go for a fairly big name for the lead.

When its one thing I hate about action movies, than it is seing that noone is getting hit. I probably can't watch fjghting scenes anymore.

This is what I like to call weirdo thinking. You have to watch your shit in a vacuum. Comparing helps no one weirdo.

I received the announcement of an American remake pretty well I guess; most Hollywood remakes piss me off but I tried to remain pretty open to this one. All of this:
Wikipedia said:
The deal was completed in November 2011 with writer-director Gareth Evans serving as an executive producer of the remake. XYZ Films, executive producers on the original Indonesian version, will be producers on the American version.[44] Screen Gems also wants the same choreographers from The Raid involved with the remake.
had me feeling pretty positive about it.

I don't like any of what I read in the OP though. Hopefully some news comes out soon that makes me feel a bit better about it. I do crave more Raid and if this is even a third as good as the original then it will be spectacular.

Is it basically going to be 2 hours of the Indy/Arab Swordsman scene over and over again?

I don't get why this bothers people so much. It's not like the original ceases to exist. And it's not stealing any shine from it either because realistically this movie would be targeted at people who (wrong as it is) would have never given the original a chance because it's a "foreign" film. We saw this with oldboy and the sky didn't fall.

I mean support the original. Give it proper marketing and release it in more than a couple hundred theaters. It can work, we've seen it before with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Sure, the remake doesn't wipe the originals out of existence or lessen their quality, but the remake becomes the focus of the conversation. This is completely anecdotal, but I've known people who have just outright refused to watch the original because "I'll just wait for the remake/the remake was bad so this must be bad/I already saw the remake so why would I watch the same movie twice?"

I'm not saying that remakes are bad, just that a lot of them are unnecessary and I think this is one of them.

Oldboy is a character drama though, there is no reason a north american version can't be great with a decent script and solid acting.

The Raid is a martial arts film, there have been maybe... 3... good western martial arts flicks.

There are far more offensive remakes in the works, like The Crow.

Crow is only offensive if they really remake it, but I will welcome it with open arms if they just make different and much more faitful adaptation of original comic.

Couldn't afford to go see The Raid 2, but I still consider myself a big fan of the series.

That said, I mean... Hughes is working with Jaa on Expendables 3.

Imagine Jaa in a The Raid movie.

Imagine iiiittttt.

Also, dunno much about Hughes. Apparently, only one of his movies has been released. His wiki entry literally amounts to three movie titles, his name, his occupation, and the whole "Australian" thing.

Just make sure that guy who constantly breaks into your home and forces you to watch remakes at gunpoint isn't around, and you should be okay.

Tony Jaa's in Fast and Furious 7, too, and I'm hoping so hard that he'll be able to turn his career around. Ong Bak 3 was almost unwatchable, and Tom Yum Goong 2 was basically a hate crime, but I know he still has the magic inside him. Someone just needs to make the introduction between him and Gareth Evans and it'll spark a new golden age of martial arts glory. Can you imagine Rama fighting motherfucking Tony GODDAMN Jaa at the end of The Raid 3? Tony Jaa with both his legs set on fire and out of his mind with rage because someone's stolen his elephant again? God, I can't even deal with it.
