Avengers and New Avengers are so fucking boring, jesus christ. Hickman should go pursue his true passions and write a dictionary. Leave comics to true superstars like Bendis.

This made me lol

I think Hickman's Fantastic Four is a masterwork and a franchise-defining run. But his Avengers stuff has been incredibly boring and seems to move in circles. It's also become painfully apparent that he only knows one way to write, because a lot of the same themes/characterizations/plot points have made separate appearance in Avengers, Ultimates, and FF. And not in a thematically resonant way, but a one-trick pony way.

Do you ever think about endings for your favorite superhero characters? Not that you don't like future installments, but you feel that THIS particular issue is pretty "the end" for this character, and you don't need to see them through anymore deaths or tragedies or status quo changes? Not a canonical ending, but a head-canon ending if you will.

Like, I get to the last page of Born Again with Matt and Karen gone through the darkest hour of their lives and come out shining, wonderfully illustrated as always by David Mazzucchelli, and I think, "you're right, this is all I need to know"

Or in what I feel is still Slott's masterpiece, Spider-Man/Human Torch, was a very real and touching story, and by the end, Peter Parker has a real family and friends, Aunt May is so proud of Peter with his friends and his wife and it feels like that terrible chapter after Uncle Ben's death has been closed, and the FF who started off as freaks and mis-fits are now largely accepting and a big happy family, sharing their children with Aunt May, MJ and Susan talking about nothing in particular but human beings getting to know each other.

Like, this is the ending of this story, right? I don't need to see any deals with the devil or Galactus invasions or Green Goblins kidnapping girlfriends or brain swaps or whatever, no. Its over. We really like these characters, don't we want them to be happy?

Or that great last page of Morrison's Animal Man, can't find it at the moment, but did you ever need to see Buddy Baker ever again after that? Not to say Milligan's issues and the current Animal Man stuff weren't worthy stories, but that last page of Animal Man #26 felt like the last page, right?

The end of Geoff Johns run on Green Lantern was this for me. His epilogue in issue #20 was the perfect end for me, everything was wrapped up nice and neat with a satisfying conclusion and I was happy with the futures he imagined for the characters. I have no interest at all in whatever Robert Vendetti is doing on the book since then.

Morrison had a couple endings that felt rather definitive for properties that are bound to go on forever.

With New X-Men, not only did they just totally defeat their greatest foe in Magneto physically, psychologically, and philosophically, but they always just retcon'd Sublime, the sentient bacteria that was preventing evolution and instilled hate and fear of mutants in the people of Earth. They basically just ended the whole "world who hates and fears us", everything was conquered by love, and Scott and Emma go on to lead the X-Men/Xavier's Institute into a future with humans and mutants co-exist more peacefully.

and with DC's big superhero team, JLA, they defeated Mageddon, which is like a living embodient of Armageddon, the biggest baddest fuckin' Doomsday threat of all-time, with all the people of Earth getting superpowers and all the various superheroes coming together to help Superman save the day. The biggest team in the DCU just took down the biggest threat ever. They go off to fight more challenges, but fuck it, what do you even do after that, fight Mageddon 2.0? Now that there aren't more good stories to tell from Mark Waid and Joe Kelly/Manhke and JLA Classified and whatever, but they didn't really feel essential to me after that.

Just finished reading the DC One Million omnibus. Wow, that was an incredible story. Aside from Morrison's own story the side stories such as Hitman were really good. I'm actually considering buying the hitman TPB because of how much I liked that one in particular.
I should mention how much I liked the character of Solaris. I actually felt kinda bad for it by the end. I like the idea of one of the Superman dynasty's greatest foes being a living sun, jealous of their lineage and the admiration they receive.

Still, its team had one of the funniest names ever, The Pancosmic Justice Jihad. Also, Pluto being considered a planet in their universe is pretty funny, but how was Morrison supposed to know about what would happen years later?

The angry animals are what make it hilarious.

I don't know, that Elephant and Walrus look pretty chill, actually.

Just placed my first-ever order at IST... Hellboy: The First 20 Years hardcover for $10.99? Bought.

Also got The Hellboy Companion, since it was under ten bucks and it'll be neat to check out as a (somewhat outdated) reference guide.

is the One Million TPB a good read in itself? I have that on my backlog shelf. "the JLA: ONE MILLION collection reprints issues #1-4 of the popular DC ONE MILLION miniseries. Also included are the #1,000,000th issues of JLA and STARMAN in their entirety, along with portions of the tie-in issues of DETECTIVE COMICS, GREEN LANTERN, SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF TOMORROW, and RESURRECTION MAN."

Its nearly 2 hours into April and we have no April thread. Its almost like Spike doesn't care about us anymore. Here we are posting in a March thread in April, we must look like the laughing stock of neogaf.

Spike Pls.

I'll make the OT. It'll be eeesy.

Maybe we can use MS paint like Spike does.

I can't shake the feeling Korupt has something to do with this. Ever since the whole 'Phil Noto is not good enough to draw black widow and I am a bad person' (I'm paraphrasing obviously) incident he has been up to something.

Nonsense. He's just lazy. And we won't need MS paint, if we're looking for poor art, I'll just hire Ramos.

I've got a made up template ready to go, if it's not ready by 12 midnight, mine will be up and it will be glorious.

Kipp

but I am taking tiny steps forward
Should be good reading next weekend

If Harbinger is awesome I might jump on the whole line...

Jealous. Those Criminal books are probably next in line for me to purchase. I think they'll be right up my alley. That Harbinger book also reminded me that I'm eagerly awaiting the hardcovers for Archer & Armstrong and Quantum & Woody. I'm looking forward to trying out some Valiant stuff.

I probably ought to take it easy on buying books for a bit though... I spent about $130 on IST last week. Heh. Stupid media mail shipping taking ages though.
