Indie Games [February] Now Voting - Post 808!

It says the "The product code you have entered has already been activated by an existing steam account."

I have emailed them to see what they say. I also cant work out how to redeem a Desura key. I'm not doing very well.

Edit: Got Desura to work.

They are probably replacing it, its not too uncommon.

I will say this first before people ask, we are the bastard offspring of that site. To best describe our connection is that we are grown up with our umbilical cord still connected, we are still unsure how to get rid of the cord without killing ourselves in the processes.

Really did enjoy the concept of the game, if it had another 3 levels/worlds it would of been the perfect length for me.
I agree and disagree with you. The platforming itself was bare-bones and basic, but I didn't see that as a negative because it was fun and I felt like, similar to Fez, the challenge wasn't the platforming but the increasingly layered puzzle mechanics. The visual style was and still is fantastic. On the length, I think four hours was perfect. The experience didn't drag on or overstay its welcome. New mechanics were being introduced so the gameplay never felt boring.

On a side note, that's kind of why I don't rank/score the games I review. Because then you're trying to judge the different aspects individually while a game as an experience is an amalgamation of all those aspects simultaneously, working in tandem.

Yeah trying to put a score on a game is annoying to do, even more so on a odd game like this which has little to compare to.

I am very new to mobile gaming (Android) as I didnt have a smartphone until 2-3 months ago. The only games I genuinely like are Hoplite and Lyne so far.

Pixel Dungeon also seems decent, but I am not feeling it yet.

If you haven't tried it already, 100 Rogues is pretty fantastic. I saw some things I didn't like about the newer versions so I kept an old one for now. Desktop Dungeons would be incredible on iPad but PC only sadly.

75k target seems a bit risky.

Anyway, in case people didn't notice: Who wants a new Malebolgia demo? Updated controls, level design and a boss fight. PM me.

75k target seems a bit risky.
Yeah it looks really fun, but they have no presence on Twitter, I haven't seen any pre-campaign stuff. But the most worrying is that they've only worked on the game for 8 weeks at the moment. And like you said, that goal is probably too ambitious

Finally a nice description of Adr1ft
Adr1ft is a non-violent first-person game that poses the player as an astronaut who begins the game floating above Earth amid the debris of a mostly-wrecked space station. Adr1ft is meant to be a quiet and lovely game with exploration and puzzles, a combination of the acclaimed immersive first-person shooter Half-Life, the beloved surreal nature-walk of Journey and the movie Gravity

Looks like a blast! I agree with the goal seeming hard to reach but definitely something I'll have to keep my eye on.

They would have to add local play to really get my interest, but looks slightly promising at the moment.

They are probably replacing it, its not too uncommon.

They sent me a replacement code and it worked, I have to get back to them with the others that don't work.

Very happy with the service. Any company can make a mistake, how they deal with them is what is important to me.

The Olympia Rising dev/artist made this in an attempt to gather more attention:

On the bright side, I was contacted by someone to create assets for a "Flappy Bird" clone... lol. Will probably pass.

Okay, working on a prototype for "Flappy Iola" right now. If this doesn't bring us some publicity, then nothing will.

Too funny not to post it here :p

I saw it mentioned earlier in the thread but figured I would toss in some screenshots for StarCrawlers in case people are interested. There aren't enough first-person dungeon crawlers out there these days and the sci-fi theme is a nice departure from the usual fantasy settings. The game seems like it will use a significant amount of procedural generation, hopefully they do a good job with the generator to reduce repetitiveness.

No alpha for the KS?

Not that I have seen yet. I suspect if it struggles over the first week they will end up putting something out there, that seems to be how many Kickstarters do it these days.

*rolleyes*

But anyway, someone poke me if they put one up please. The execution is key for these games, I cant feel interested without something to get my hands on.

I just realized this february thread means that this thread series survived a whole 12 months now. Its going great, thanks for all the recommendations and discussion guys :)

*pops a bottle*

Although Hof really needs to come back. Hope you are fine, pal.

Who's Hof?

Hofmann, regular in this thread series for the first 7-8 months or so, then he took a break due to some small games burnout and had a lot of stuff on his plate personally with moving and I am sure other stuff as well. You'll basically find a post from him on almost every page in the first few threads, I think its fair to say that he helped shaping what this thread is today by a rather sizeable amount.

He was one of the biggest pillars of this thread in the beginning, recommending and providing opinions on games that were obscure even to me and carrying most of the weight in here beside me until Badass arrived (who is currently incredibly important for filling the thread with some content and opinions, thanks baddy!). He is also the biggest buff about non-games in here, so that was really cool to have his opinion on these games.

Anyway, his opinion and contributions are missed. Cheers to you Hof, the door is wide open once you have some more time.

Edit: An anniversary is a good enough reason to get a bit sentimental.

Edit2: And if he would have been around lately, the KRZ contribution for the Best of thread wouldnt have taken so fucking long :p

Hofmann. He was a regular in the threads, would do the Screenshot Saturday posts. Hasn't posted since the December thread, I think

Right, after checking the account name i do recognize the avatar from when I used to lurk before I registered. Seems his last post was on Jan 1st. Thanks for the clarification, hope he starts posting again.

Maverick Bird - Free (Browser)

Flappy rule I just made up: This is the only Flappy Bird type game to be allowed in this thread. Ever.

And that only because I like Cavanagh :p

Maverick Bird - Free (Browser)

Whatever, it's way better than the majority of his flash stuff and the only bird game I could stand to play, by far. Shows how talent works.

Anyway, Olympia Rising has kinda grown on me over the past few days. I'm rooting for its success. I think it's way more interesting than Darkest Dungeon, but that's just me.

Ha, I just posted about the game in the Flappy Bird thread on Toucharcade
the only Flappy Bird clone/fan game that matters

Can't beat Cavangh's special sauce that he adds to all his games

Maverick Bird - Free (Browser)
Seriously. This game...I'm hooked. I tried Flappy Bird once, and really that game was mediocre at best. But I've been playing Maverick for 20 minutes straight

I'd buy this on IOS.so fast. The physics, the music, the pulsing visuals are just perfect, and it's amazing how adding something as simple as being able to dive makes the gameplay feel fresh.

I'd actually say that its a decent game while Flappy Bird was outright bad.

Personally I think Maverick is more than decent. Now I've played many many twitch reflex games and it's a genre I love, and there are certain aspects that make some click and other just not as good. Compared to many other twitch games I've played, Maverick elevates itself in several aspects. The physics are spot on and controls are tight, the music has the kind of beat that just drives you and easily lets you get into the zone. The gameplay is simple yet has some complexity due to the ability to dive, which allows for obstacles not possible in similar games. It's just all its elements in sync delivering some top notch quality twitch gameplay

Almost 2 hours into [Game name REDACTED] and it continues to impress. There have been a few challenging platforming sections interspersed between the traversal and light puzzle solving, but for the most part, it's all about the experience. Some might say it's boring, too much walking, but if there's one thing the game has excelled at since the start, it's making you feel small, insignificant within the massive alien spaces. That has been the highlight for me, just traveling through this mysterious complex. You exit from a narrow corridor into a gargantuan space that makes you tense just looking over the edge, and then you realize you have to find a way down. The game doesn't hold your hand, don't direct you where to go, besides the visual environmental cues. The game is certainly linear, don;t expect a sprawling world, but you do have to find your way and it's easy to get disoriented, lost, turned around. The game has a fantastic atmosphere, mysterious, engaging, ominous, otherworldly.

As for negatives, there's one mechanic that at the moment feels more extraneous than integral to the overall experience. It complicates a simple action, and while it kind of feels almost Receiver-esque in the sense that you have to focus on an action that is usually automatic, I don't think it has really added anything to the gameplay yet. One platforming section was quite frustrating and I ended up just turning up the gamma to complete it. Also I found some checkpoints can be bit too spread out, but that's only been an issue two or three times.

If I wasn't so engrossed and committed to this playthrough of Persona 4 Golden that I'm working on right now, I would buy this in a heartbeat when it releases. I don't see myself finishing it until the weekend, so keep those impressions coming! Sounds great.

Olympia Rising is showing strong backend support right now. It made almost 1000$ in a day, and is now at almost 7000/10000 with 3-4 days left.

Lets dooo thiiiis.

Vertiginous Golf is coming to Early Access in March

Is there any more information on this? I mean, it looks like a real winner. Tough to resist at $10 (instead of $15 once it reaches Early Access), gorgeous style, and local multiplayer.

But in a post-Spelunky world, I want online leaderboards and daily challenges. Yu has spoilt me rotten.

SteamWorks integration for user-created courses would be amazing.... Asking for too much? Yes, yes, perhaps.

Need to drum up more support. Man, I'd be happy if it's another Windforge-style success and the campaign just makes it by a $1

Right now it's kind of bare bones, with two 9-hole courses, at least the last time I checked. But the aesthetic is great (one of most inventive "menus" I've seen) and the course design is awesome. It's mini golf turned up to 11. The physics can a bit weird at the moment,

Its an incredibly simple one button game (okay, two, but eh), and there are MILLIONS of it. Flappy Bird in itself was a clone of other similar games and these games "work", but they are still nothing special. On the low level that these games exist on, Terry's version is definitely a good one, the one eyed among the blind if you want, but overall its not much more than a decent time waster.

But yeah, two people cant agree on EVERYTHING, cant they? ;)

Magicite is Terraria plus a RPG? Well shit, talk about stroking the old game boner. I searched GAF but didn't see anything. Anyone here give it a shot? I'm certainly going to give it a try but will wait a few weeks after the first few waves of early access updates hit.

I'd also be curious for some impressions of it.

Could you please make a proper post for it? (see formatting in the OP)

Kyn - PC / Mac / Linux (Summer 2014)
nc_gallery8.jpg

http://www.kyngame.com/

Kyn is a singleplayer video game that mixes exciting team combat with an engrossing world worth exploring. Control powerful warriors in tactical combat built on making smart decisions in tough situations.

I searched the forums and didn't see a proper post for this title, only a screenshot saturday image. Let me know if it has been covered already!

This has been a two man job in the works for a few years now. I've worked one of the guys making it for the past 6 or 7 years on various game and non game related stuff. I was able to play a very early alpha demo a month or so ago and I think there is a lot of potential here. Good combo of strategy and rpg. I think they are planning to get on greenlight at some point in the near future. The link has a trailer and other stuff.
