mossberg 500 or remington 870 12ga.

you will spend hours of research online to reach this same conclusion OP

I'd suggest going into your local Big5/Dicks/Gun retail store and seeing if they have any deals for these two guns as that will make the decision easier.

Take a case of PBR and poke holes in them and try to drink as many as you can before your intruder decides you know how to party.

I hear sawed offs are really popular.

And illegal without a class III stamp.

OP, get an 18.5" Mossberg 500. It's cheap, reliable, and easy to use. Even comes with a pistol grip in most cases.

I've had both a Remington 870 and a Mossberg 500 and haven't had any issues whatsoever with the Mossberg.

Here's my Mossberg setup:

Hogue grip and laser sight that replaces the barrel nut for easy hip shooting.

Guys whats the best device to wound, maim or even kill some random unprivileged youths who, out of hunger, broke into my place ? I don't want them to take my tv or my videogames

Quetiapine systemic.

It's a generic, so you can get it cheap. It's just as effective as Seroquel at treating paranoia disorders.

You realize this doesn't happen right? Nobody (in America) breaks into someone's house to steal some bread, or money for bread.

Now this thread has reached comfort zone status!

I don't think shotguns are very good for home protection.

Most are big and clumsy. The smaller ones are hard to shoot because of the recoil. And at close range, they are extremely deadly, which is not necessarily a good thing for home defense (ie, what if you shot the wrong person?)

The only real advantage they have is they are scary looking.

I'd say, get a big revolver. A .357 and load it with the .38 special FBI load or a .45. Both have good stopping power, but not overly lethal.

They are simple to use - point and shoot. Yet because they have a heavy trigger pull, it's not something you can accidentally shoot.

Revolvers also don't jam and are low maintenance, and while not as scary looking as a shotgun, can be intimidating.

Well, how would you know unless you first asked them their intentions over a nice cup of tea?

OP, you need a tea kettle, not a shotgun.

Im undecided if i want a shotgun or handgun right now. Usually shotguns are the things recommended for home defense. I guess this is because they have real stopping power and usually you hit what you point at. Still the limited ammo capacity and size seems like it might present an issue.

Shotguns, imo, are the best for home defense. It's hard to miss with them due to the spread. Sure, a handgun would be cool but i'm sure during a tense moment i would miss.

Shotguns are perfect for home defense actually because they are so intimidating and pretty easy to use with a bit of practice. I'd never personally shoot anyone but I know how to use one and there's nothing scarier than hearing that clack clack.

What about a shotgun with rock salt or some equivalent? I know it still could potentially do permanent harm/kill, but for someone who has no interest in potentially killing intruders (especially in the case of misunderstandings), would that be a more viable option?

Why is limited ammo capacity a bad thing if the sole purpose is home defense? How many rounds are you expecting to NEED to fire in a single day considering that the first shot is likely going to be enough to get someone to start hightailing it off of your property (in the imaginary scenario where you are being invaded while still at home)?

Be sure to go to the range and test how big the "spread" really is. It's smaller than you might think at distances typical for a home. You still have to have decent aim, so it's good to get lots of practice in. Besides, targeting shooting is fun and gives your gun a different purpose.

Any shotgun will fire non-lethal/less than lethal ammo if the owner wants to use it. I have a bunch of .2 g airsoft shells loaded up.

Right, because all thieves are never armed and they never put your life in danger.

Definitely. I'm going to go clay shooting as soon as i get the shotgun.

Buy a Glock 19 with a 31 round mag. Here's what I carry

If you get a pump gun, PRACTISE. Short stroking is a real risk in pressure situations. Also invest in safe storage for it.

That's a lot of rounds to be missing with. For self defence or home defence, shoulder arms are better because they are so much easier to use effectively.

Actually, the spread is very tight at short distances. Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIQEkxKFky8

Depending on your living area, most shots would be >10' Granted, it is more difficult to miss with buckshot compared to a revolver. But the spread may not be as wide as you think.

I second the life alert suggestion. My bubby had a solicitor knock on her door and the police were there in under 2 minutes.

Shotguns are easier to handle and as you noted, you tend to hit what you point at. Handguns usually require some training before you can hit a target you aim at. You don't need a lot of ammo for a shotgun when one blast on target is enough to stop the person.

The shotgun will tend to be harder to maneuver in tight spaces like inside a house but getting a short-barrel model, which is typical of home defense models, helps a bit. In any case, if you move within grab distance of your target with either a shotgun or a handgun, your target will probably try to grab it and disarm you. Which is why you don't do that.

The familiar sound of a shotgun racking also tends to scare the shit out of your assailant and makes it easier to negotiate with them, since actually shooting the assailant is pretty much the last resort in a home defense situation.
