Square Enix Want To Bring Dragon Quest VII For 3DS To The West, can't justify cost

Square Enix Want To Bring Dragon Quest VII For 3DS To The West, But Aren’t Sure If It’ll Sell Enough

“In terms of DQVII, it has a lot of text to go through and translate,” Fujimoto said, “and we’ve received so many requests and so much positive feedback about the game, but unfortunately, we have to consider the cost and the manpower needed to handle the sheer load of text.
In terms of scenario and script, the game is probably one of the largest in the DQ franchise. If a lot of people can buy it and support it… well, we can’t promise anything.”

...

“Going back to people who want DQVII to come out… we’ve gotten a lot of requests, we really want to do it, but right now, we need to hammer out what kind of resources we’d need to do it. We say this a lot, but, we can’t seem to get to the point where it’s justifiable.”

there's a lot more through the link

Not sure on sales ? After Bravely Default, still not sure on sales ?
Come on, it's likely to sell more than any DQ on iOS or Android... and sold at a higher price.
Of course, if you're waiting for piracy to become rampant and a successor announced, you're going to get troubles to sell it. But there's a new model of 3DS coming out soon. What about localizing it now ?

Dammit Square, if XSeed can get through the Trails in the Sky games, you should be able to localize a single game.

Legit question - anyone have a ballpark figure in terms of either finance or manpower it would take to translate a game of this size.

I know interpreters in business that both translate and contextualise large reports on a regular basis. Im curious as to the differences in localizing a videogame that warrant not releasing an otherwise complete codebase.

I think I've said it in every relevant thread (meaningless as that may be), but yeah, I'd really like to see this localized.

It's weird reading this after the whole thing with Bravely Default being successful after they basically passed on it.

DQ9 is a new game - this is a port/remake. This is more similar to DQ4-6 than 9, and I think those did pretty poorly sales-wise. Sales-GAF would have those numbers though and I'm sure they've been thrown around dozens of times already.

SE are so fucking useless. Countless DQ fans out West have made numeorus petitions clamouring for DQVII out West and now again they're "pondering". Just leave the DQ franchise publishing to Nintendo out West, they seem more willing to spend marketing dollars on it.

DQVII can be positioned as a main entry in the franchise; it's 3D and no one remembered the original version (it'd be new in Europe). Also, BD did 1m, so there's demand for traditional jRPGs.

Nah, just work on localizing DQ11. Don't want the future of DQ localization determined by the sales of a remake.

Of course it costs money to translate something, but if money is such a concern why not just release it on eShop? People who are likely to buy a JRPG or a 7th entry in a series are probably the kind of people who are going to be aware of the eShop, and how to go on there and buy something.

I think Kickstarters should be used more often for this kind of thing. I'm sure not everyone feels this way, but IMO, it's totally justifiable to not put something out because you'll lose money. You're a business. But if you were to ask people to put their money where their mouth is for games like this, Yakuza 5, and even a Shenmue 3 down the line, you can start at breaking even and only make more money from there.

There's no reason why AAA publishers shouldn't be able to use crowdfunding to keep mid-tier/niche gaming alive. I just wish some publisher had the balls to try it.

I think a lot of people in this thread are grossly over estimating the Dragon Quest fanbase in the west.

Those DS remakes did not do all that well and DQVII is a massive game. I mean a 100+ hour game with all that text to localize? Yea if I was in charge of a company I'd make damn sure if was worth my while. Yea the fans will love if but if not enough people buy then SE's point has been proven. Fan brownie points mean nothing if you take a massive loss.

Bravely Default =/= Dragon Quest

aka. SE being useless again without Nintendo paying the bills.

I love this series and they really need to bring this one over as its the last one I dont own (was never released here). Definitely buying it!

Can anyone tell me how much it would realistically cost to bring it over? Don't they already have all the translations from the original release (ie. PS1)?!
