Thanks to Gaffercake for bringing it up.

You can see how much better freerunning flows when they compare it directly to AC3, definitely seems much more "free" and natural, and not as constricted and "right-angled" as it used to be. The jury is still out regarding stealth and combat. I only see that they've added a crouch button and that they've removed instantkill counters and chain-kills, but all changes so far seem to be for the better. There's also the return of the more investigative assassinations of AC1 where you had to find your mark from a vantage point and decide how to proceed. Getting a bit more hype about this one though after watching this video.

Love the refocus on player-driven assassinations. This is an element the series strayed away from after the investigative component of the original was gutted entirely and I've been wishing for a return since 2.
If everything comes together as well as Ubi claims then it could very well dethrone the original as my favourite of the bunch.

It does seem very much like Assassin Creed 1's concept fully realized. Especially with the major assassination contracts being more like a boss battle than a casual encounter. That was easily the worst change for AC1 to AC2; in AC2 the assassinations happened too frequently and were too unimportant.

I hope they can do the demos and videos justice. I'm really looking forward to this.

Cross posting, too 'cause I don't feel like regurgitating everything:
Removing countering in combat? Holy hell, yes! Make me struggle with these fights, Ubi.

The additions to the control scheme for climbing and descending are a dream come true. No more frustrations about randomly latching up a wall while chasing a target.

And refining the concepts of AC1 assassinations is music to my fucking ears.

Speaking of music, I can't wait until we finally get our hands on the soundtrack. It sounds good for the most part, and they still haven't revealed who is composing.

Right now, Ubisoft is saying all the right things (women controversy notwithstanding), and this is really the first time I'm following the development of a Ubisoft game this closely, unlike previous games where I just watched the trailers and didn't care after that.

Thing is, I don't expect much from Ubisoft in anything, so despite all the good things I'm hearing, I'm not expecting it to be a big game changer or to suddenly make the series something outside a 7-8/10 range. I would love to be wrong, though.

My favorite games in the series are AC1 & AC3. Please outdo them in all departments, Unity!

I like that parkour now has rapid descent and the ability to climb in a more 8-way manner than 4-way seen in previous games.

If they can pull it off like they promise this will probably be my favorite AC.

Happy they are going back to Big European citys, they seem to be a better match for the AC universe than the rather smaller North American citys.
Also it seems like they fixed the navigation, no more running by trees and try to climb onto them :D

I'll say what i did in the other thread the stealth looks inspired by Blacklist, the two base types of missions have potential, the parkour looks massively improved adding to the fluidity that (for the most part) has risen in every game, and the interior sandbox assassinations should(hopefully) give the game replayabilty that prior games really haven't had. It all sounds really good on paper. Now let's see if it holds up over a 20-30 hour game.

Youtube?

Gameinformer player is pure garbage and my internet is pure garbage too so it combines to make a pure raw steamy garbage!!

Damn, this is really the one AC I've been wanting since the promise of the first one. Awesome!

Don't avatarquote me, you judgemental people!

Ubisoft needs to have a big meeting where they bring together the leads of AC and make them have lunch with the guys who made Splinter Cell: Blacklist so they can discuss how to make a stealth game.

The video has some promising adjustments. I like the wall run from climb, the sideways ascent, the rapid descent, the revamped wall run control control scheme. All subtle, and positive changes.

I like the crouch button, and this is honestly the biggest change to the entire series. I'm looking forward to this for sure.

The combat doesn't really look any better based on what they showed.

Elements of the UI look sloppy as well, like the red and yellow outlines around enemies that look awful.

I'm still excited about this game, but it's a cautious excitement. Co-op will be a huge draw for me, and that and the crouch button are basically the only things making me consider this game at some point after release.

Well, I welcome the greater focus on assassinations like in the first game, but I really wouldn't want them to lose the greater variety and more fleshed out missions of the sequel. I can't understand for the life of me why you consider the first the best in the series though. There was a specific set of missions you had to do first before doing an assassination. The problem was it was basically the same thing over and over again for an entire game.

It's like they had an idea what the core gameplay would be, but didn't get past that early concept. There isn't really a game there, just a bunch of ideas. :s

I'm liking a lot of the message that they are conveying with what they are doing with Unity. Also like the fact I won't have to be stealthy if I don't want to be.

I remain skeptical about the combat, simply because taking out the instant counter will remove some of that player fantasy of being that badass assassin dude who leaves a pile of bodies laying around them.

Changes to parkour sound good, even if I'm still waiting for manual grabs to come back. I never liked the changes they made to that system with AC3, which made that so much less involving.

"Combat should be a fail-state"

I'm erect

Unfortunately he followed that up with "If you want to play the game without stealth, you can!" I have doubts but it's definitely looking better than what we've been given. Love that they're moving back to a bigger focus on the assassination targets. Not evolving the investigations from AC1 was a pretty big mistake IMO. Sounds like they've taken a look at the series (like they did with Blacklist) and are making steps to rectify.

Honestly it sounds like even the director himself doesn't know if they have really improved it, unlike the two other pillars where he seems more excited about. It's truly the one aspect of this game that doesn't look all that great.

I got the exact same feeling from him.

Dat new parkour system tho....makes me moist. Fighting sadly still looks like a chore but I'll reserve judgment since I thought Bayonetta looked like a cluster fuck til I played it. So far though this is looking like a true Assassin's Creed 2.

Yeah my heart skipped a beat when he said they were following the original Assassin's Creed's philosophy.

I'm really excited.

You have to be really bitter and jaded to not be excited for this game. It seems like they've taken on board almost every single criticism of the AC franchise to date and addressed all of them. The only bit I'm not sure if they've addressed is the challenge of the combat but I'm happy to wait and see. He doesn't articulate why he thinks it's more difficult but that prototype video definitely made it look more challenging than previous games at least.

Combat doesn't looked changed that much, just that the auto-kill counter move is gone in place of a parry from which you have to manually initiate your combo string. So it's a bit more work on the player's part in addition to having to be more careful with groups of enemies.

Very happy that they're going back to AC1 though because I don't think they've ever delivered on the promises that game made with its CG trailer. If they can capture that I'll be happy.

I want to see more about the world now though. They really have to step up systemic activity to bring the locations to life, something AC's never done either.

I really, really like what I'm hearing. Seriously, GAF, I'm depending on you guys to let me know whether or not they deliver on their promises this time.

Not really. I mean, this is coming out within 1 month of another AC game. I think most people have played this, repeatedly. The question is, does it do enough new stuff to justify going through an AC game yet again?

You'd have to be really bitter and jaded to not be excited for the 4th or 5th AC title in two years? lol

Sounds good on paper, but I'm way tired of the AC formula and will wait to see if they deliver.

Can't wait, this and Dragon Age: inquisition will keep me busy this fall.

I like that they finally added more buttons, took them long enough.

AC1 I think was limited by the experience of the industry and the technology at the time.

It looks like they're really going to reach that vision this time and I am hype.

Parkour changes are looking very nice. That's one thing that always frustrated me about AC games, you'd be trying to escape guards and you'd get stuck trying to climb up a wall and get knocked back down to the ground. Unity looks really fluid and adding the interior environments will help alot.

This video has greatly raised my level of interest in Assassin's Creed Unity.

Also, the game's creative director has beautiful hair.

the improvements sound very interesting and appear to remove some of the major issues i've had with this series... but they're coming about three games too late.
