A hidden gem on Steam - 'A Story About My Uncle'

Jeff Cannata recommended this game on his podcast 'DLC' with Christian Spicer, I had never heard of it so I decided to check it out and was pleasantly surprised. I would advice to not watch the launch trailer, it's kinda spoilery imo. If you absolutely need to watch some gameplay before buying check out this random Youtube playthrough. I've played for about 2 hours and I like both the atmopshere and gameplay, it gets a bit repetitive but I don't think the game is that long so that's fine, feels good to soar through the air. The game runs and controls very well and it has a fleshed out options menu, FoV etc.

I think this game deserves some attention so check it out if you are interested, 10% off as I'm writing this.

A Story About My Uncle is a non-violent First-Person platform adventure game built in the Unreal Engine. It is a story about a boy who searches for his lost uncle and ends up in a world he couldn’t imagine existed.

The movement through the world in A Story About My Uncle is a crucial part of it’s core gameplay – focusing on swinging yourself through caverns with a grappling hook mechanic that gives the player a wonderful sense of speed and freedom. Soar through a game world with a unique art style and a mysterious story unraveling slowly before you.

After working hard for almost a year we have finally released A Story About My Uncle to the world! From a small prototype in 2012 to a full release now in 2014, it has been quite the journey, but we are now ready to set it free for you all to play.

We like to thank all of you for your fantastic support during the development process, your kind words were the biggest motivation that kept us going during the late-night sessions and struggles with bugs.

I bet you expected another kind of game with that game title

I noticed this in the new releases section and thought that the screens looked very impressive for something I knew nothing about. Busy with other stuff at the moment but I bookmarked the store page.

It's hard to find anything worthwhile on Steam nowdays when it's filled with 80% crap, most of the time you need to know what you are looking for beforehand.

I picked this up after seeing a video trailer, and have played for 30 minutes. I love the game! Such a misleading title for something so cool.

I wishlisted this a few days ago. Will pick it up when I've played at least 1 game from my Steam library. Shits getting out of hand.

Recently played it, and not a fan.

Like that initial moment when you're running around and slinging across the field feels so dope. Purely in terms of a sense of vertigo and all that stuff, and in general because you can probably count the games that do first person platforming right on one hand(and that's being generous I think).

But like I just found the level design to be boring. Like a lot of the levels are just straight random platforms in space, and that's pretty much what a platformer is, but the environment for each level just feels samey after awhile. It feels like you're slinging across, but not really getting anywhere for large stretches. No sense of pace or variety to it on a gameplay level.

I could see someone really getting into wanting to master it and speed run it, and that'll probably feel great, but the initial playthrough: when it's all raw and stuff? was not a fan.

Oh and the voice acting/plot was out right poor.

Thanks for the impressions of this dmr87. Someone else linked to it in another thread and I added it straight to my wishlist. Can't remember which poster it was or even the thread it was in but thanks whoever who are.

Looks absolutely terrific and I'll definitely be picking it up once I've cleared a bit more of my backlog.

All valid criticism, I haven't played more cause of work but if you've completed it, how far am I if I'm in the
ice cavern
?

Right now i´m playing the time trials and you can do really crazy shit outside of the obvious path, one you nailed the timing, aiming, and path you can literally fly trough it, loved the way you mantain your momentun, people should play this, anyone that liked mirror´s edge should try it, is pretty different, but the feeling that you get when you find the optimal path... so good, and the story seems to be much more than it seems according to some folks.
It´s a game about coping with the dead of the aforementioned Uncle, you can find the names of the stages of grief and loss in the different stages

Awesome game, bought it full price and it was totally worth it. Too bad it will fly under the radar. I don't know why Coffee Stain promoted that Goat Simulator crap so much and not this game

A french review here

The reviewer gave 14/20 praising the good feeling of the "flying" gameplay with nice but under-used mechanics. The journey is pleasant but it ends too quickly after it starts (4h30).

Is a short game i finished in less than four hours, if you are in for exploring the mechanics and the enviroments ii has its replay value, but of course mileage may vary, i would like to get the gold in all the time trials, the ice cave is gonna be fun, is where i spend most of my time
