Curt Schilling: Kingdoms of Amalur IP buyer will have a “$1B” franchise on its hands

“If someone were to buy Amalur, put team back on it, it’s a billion dollar franchise, 2 years later and still no ones done what we were doing.”

The upcoming auction of assets formerly owned by 38 Studios, includes the Amalur IP and unfinished MMO Copernicus, both of which have seen interest from several games companies, according to auction organizers.

These potential bidders include some “well-known industry figures”, apparently.

The auction, takes place December 11 via telephone, and all firms will be pre-screened and must sign an NDA. Initial bids are due by December 4.

Other properties on the block include Big Huge Games, in-house development technologies and Rise of Nations IP as well as Rise of Nations: Tactics a completed, unreleased game developed by 38 Studios.

Rhode Island underwrote 38 Studios a $75 million loan, has sued various 38 Studios leaders for the firm’s financial collapse, but plans to honor debts and costs associated the studios’ bankruptcy by paying $90 million.

yeah no you are wrong Curt stop lying. Go away.
Come Clean. Remember when Philly fans hated you before you blew up.
you are still equal to Rich Kotite Curt.

Wait wait wait. There was a complete, unreleased Rise of Nations game? WHAT. Is it crap? Why are we being deprived of this goodness?

So long as they wash their hands of Copernicus and focus on a Reckoning sequel they'll have a healthy, little franchise to build on for years to come. Schilling was too ambitious. Not the sort of guy I'd go to for advice about the Amalur IP.

Amalur gets ragged on a lot but I feel like it has boat loads of potential.

Kingdoms of Amalur was a single player game no?
38 Studios sank because they were pursuing a costly Amalur MMO that never materialized.

Why do they have 2 games that are completed and unreleased? Probably could have helped with the financial problems, eh?

Loved Kingdoms of Amalur. What a under-appreciated gem. I can see it getting really huge as a free MMORPG but I hope it stays a single player RPG.

Kingdoms of Amalur was a single player game no?

KoA was released because curt realized "oh no I am an idiot with money we should release something to stop the bleeding"

the original intention was to literally make a juggernaut MMO as the studio's first game.

WHAT!!

Didn't it do pretty OK for an unknown RPG IP?

I think it had more to do with Schilling's expectations being way out of line with reality.

Exactly this. Reckoning did great for a brand new fantasy IP. 38 and BHG might still be around to make a sequel if Schilling was just content with establishing the franchise before turning it into a cash-guzzling MMO.

A billion dollars? WAY overestimate. And I'm a huge fan of Reckoning. People don't give the lore enough credit--there's a TON of potential for future stories. And that battle system was already great and can only become better with tweaks.

There's improvements that can be made on the game, but let's see who buys it first.

One billion dollars eh? I still remember the story Curt himself told of his own testers playing World of Warcraft while at work because they were so bored by their own game.

I don't know if it's a $1B franchise. But it has a LOT of potential.

It's like a teacher finding a student that doesn't do any of its hw besides the very basic and when you go and confront him, he's actually extremely smart and eloquent. But nobody has given him that push to strive to be better. He could be the next president.

Amalur 2016

yeah, it's a shame they perused a MMO because Reckoning was really fun. I'd definitely like to see another game from it's universe with that combat.

Reckoning was a game that already existed and was reskinned with the Amalur IP to start establishing a brand and mitigate some of the bleeding 38 was going through trying to get their MMO finished. If I recall Reckoning needed to sell twice as many units to keep 38 afloat.

Am I the only one who was turned OFF by Amalur and would have rather had Reckoning be its own standalone game?

I am so fucknig tired of sequels and games having pre-existing franchises forced upon them. For the love of god, establish your own fucking lore for once. Fuck.

I think video game writers fear world building, but you don't need to build an entire world for any game. Leaving it up to the imagination is often most effective.

a generic fantasy setting with one mediocre game that obviously came out to early and an unfinished mmo. Yeah, definitely sounds worth $1B to me!

Curt your first mistake wsa hiring that hack Todd MacFarlane as the art director

I'm not a fan of mcfarlane at all but the art direction in reckoning was excellent imo. The real mistake (other than Curt Schilling, lol) was hiring ra salvator. Now THAT guy is a hack.

I'll say it: There isn't a single RPG released in the last ten years with lore as interesting as Amalur's. I have to think most of the people who called it generic didn't bother to really learn about the universe, because there was TONS of cool shit in it.

There are a lot of billion dollar ideas out there, but its interesting how much of that value gets burned away in the process of bringing that pure idea into the realm of the possible, the probable, and then the actual, like a meteor streaking its way down to the surface.

By the end of it all you might only have dust to show for it.

I liked Reckoning. It had a lot of issues, but was a great start, in my opinion.

The universe they created was relatively interesting, too. I had a decent amount of faith in the MMORPG. It's really too bad about what happened.

that guy too

Whatever your reason for disliking Todd is, it's misplaced here. The art was one of the game's highpoints.

Todd's work is only best when he's doing things like backgrounds and environment setpieces. Guy can detail like a motherfucker. Actual character /designs?/ Atrocious.

Amalur had a wonderful setting. It was a world I adored exploring, regardless of how small it was.

But everyone looked the same and was incredibly butt ugly. Much like McFarlane's usual work.

What?

I'm curious what the end product would have been. I don't think any of us here can say he's flat out wrong when we really have no idea.

If any of you are interested, I am selling my IP for 5 billion dollars:

Contact me immediately if you are interested. It's clear to everyone that this offer won't last.

The original spawn stuff wasn't bad at all. And Salvatore can write better than 23 of the Tolkien copycats out there... if that counts for anything
