Ryse: Son of Rome - Combat Update

So the main thing I picked up is that you have a QTE to finish off an enemy...but you can fail the QTE and it doesn't matter.

Which struck the interviewer as odd...and myself as well. Wouldn't you just not have one?

I also don't like the sound of the camera getting close when you are 1v1 with somebody. Whilst that sounds good in theory, with people running around everywhere I would suspect the camera will be going nuts trying to work it out as well.

After a hands-on with the latest build on the eve of Gamescom, however, I have good news: there's no need to worry about Ryse: Son of Rome. The combat has plenty of depth, and the AI is aggressive enough that you'll be challenged plenty. Oh, and QTEs are merely optional finishing moves, with the giant button prompt over a foe's head replaced by a subtle colored outline around the not-long-for-this-world bad guy that corresponds to the button you're supposed to press in order to nail the best execution.

You have to finish off the enemy somehow, its just saying basically if you attack and enemy they die and if you don't do the execution, you don't fail it.

Its not really that different to any other game.

Poor recuit at the end of the gladiator video. Seems like fun but it's a shame there's no Versus.

Edit: Brian's hair is so good.

It still feels to me that this was a QTE game for Kinect that's been 'reverse engineered' to be all things to all men.

It might work but like heavily reshooting a film when it doesn't deliver it very rarely works out for everyone.

We shall see.

And this:

So what the hell happened at E3? Crytek admits they should've shown off more raw gameplay instead of a "perfect" playthrough. "Without showing the full depth [of the combat], without showing failure [to pull off a move or execution]...did it do us some injustice? Maybe," admitted senior producer Brian Chambers. "It left a lot of questions."

But they've probably put >50% of the animation budget into finishers... so they're staying in there whether or not they can make them matter in gameplay.

This game just does not look like the big exclusive it's billed as.

Maybe it's fun hands-on, and maybe it will look less generic once they reveal more of the game...but I can't shake that 'meh' feeling.

I'm sorry, I love the setting and graphics look decent (not as good as the first reveal except the colosseum scene), but gameplay still looks absolutely awful. Choppy, wonky, near every attack or every other a slow motion slash. It's pretty much as it was before only with the QTE prompts removed lol.

Looking much better and I'll probably pick it up, if it impresses. Whilst I get what the guy's saying, I still feel as if executions should be able to fail, but as long as the combat leading up to that point is satisfying, I'm cool with it.

Looks fantastic and very atmospheric too. Phil Spencer may have been telling the truth!

Nothing worse then them saying they purposely designed it for people who are simple.

Seriously, "the other way was to hardcore." What a lame excuse

Not quite how it was described. He stated that if you do the QTE you get the execution. If you press the wrong button...you still get the execution.

Failing and not getting to see it would make sense like any other game. But are QTEs hardcore now? Hmm.

The combat looks indecipherable from the video. Just can't see the beats or rhythm of the system in place, looks really unappealing.

The prompts are still there.

Instead of a button on screen they've changed it to the outline of the enemys' body changing to the corresponding button colour for the finisher :/

So uninspired... it looks pretty much like an 360 title and the gameplay seems clunky, slow and repetative as hell... Crytek you could do so much better....

Usually games that have solid combat dont need to come out with 2-3 updates from pr people telling you about how the combat is better but nobody really seeing it. This game is going to be hot garbage. Ryse: Son of Lair

We'll see. The fact it was a Kinect game and then wasn't says to me that there is some troubled development here, and that never bodes well.

Man come on crytek announce an pvp mode slap an stamina bar which drains while evading and blocking on it and call it a day for pvp..

Graphically and cinematically looks amazing but the gameplay just seems too simple. They should have given this some RPG elements like classes and such.

It somehow looks worse for me.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually agree. I didn't like the QTE prompts from the E3 build, but the fighting in this build looks so stilted and awkward, almost a step backwards.

What happened to this game visually? It looked pretty bad in that gladiator arena demo.

Was the E3 build running on actual One hardware or PC?

Edit: Gameplay and animation look...awkward. The AI seems to be patterned after headless chickens.

I like how they are taking a more fanciful take on Rome with the Colosseum/Holodeck/Danger room and enemy clones you're fighting.

For whatever reason, this already looks dated gameplay-wise and even with some of the animations. It's one of those launch games for a system that I'll look back on and go "man, remember how rough the start of the generation was?"

Wish Crytek would return to what made Crysis 1 such an amazing FPS. It wasn't merely the aesthetic, but rather some of the best FPS combat found to date. Really fun shooter sandbox that rewarded creativity.

Seeing this polar opposite approach is disheartening. Designing a game around the lowest common denominator sounds like a terrible way to go about things but what do I know... seems to work well for CoD and other franchises.
