MS shows Xbox One indie self-publishing; full power access; MS controls retail price

Microsoft said it met with more than 50 developers to learn what they wanted from a self-publishing program, and ID@Xbox, as it's known, is the result.

Under the new rules, each registered developer will receive two development kits at no cost, and developers will have access to the full power of the console, cloud services, Kinect and the Xbox Live toolset, which includes Xbox SmartGlass, multiplayer, Achievements and Gamerscore, among other things.

Crucially, there are no application fees, and as with Xbox 360, there are no fees for certification or title updates.

Can a mod edit the title to "Microsoft unveils Xbox One indie developer self-publishing program"?

Good for them. Its a shame that this wasn't the case from day one post reveal. I'd always assumed that the most Kinect based innovation would come from indies with access to it.

Good - actively pursue Don't Starve and Sir You Are Being Hunted to get them on the console, and that'll be enough to win me over.

This is great news. It's glad to see at least Microsoft is acknowledging it's errors and fixing them. No fees is great!

Yeah, having search via Kinect is not "discoverability".

You need the people who don't know your game exists to see it on the storefront and be sold by it.
Man i hope MS and Sony sort this shit out this gen, full user reviews, videos, lots of screenshots, etc. Just copy Steam, you idiots.

Yeah, was just about to whine about that pointless little bit of Kinect "shoehorning", that only helps if you know the name of the game you're looking for.
It would be great to flick through a list of recently released indie games shouting "next page" at a TV for ages.

Only a tiny whine though, overall good news.

They're going to give indie devs TWO devkits for free with no application fees!?

There MUST be a catch. There must be a money wall somewhere.

This is super impressive. I wonder if they will give out free units to indies beyond the 50 though.

X1 is slowly becoming more competitive. This was one of the biggest sticking points for me in my next gen choice.

So, I hate to say 'I told you so' when people were convinced it was only going to be access to the Win8 partition...

Great news, though. I hope it doesn't take Sony long to copy.

Sounds very in depth and well thought out. Ca't imagine there would be too many complaints left to make about indies and XB1.

I think the catch is that you get vetted.

Reading more, yes, you get very vetted for free devkits, but not too much for the retail-as-devkit scenario.

This sounds good.

Is this what resentful panic looks like?

No, this is a hopeful indie developer not wanting to believe too much.

EDIT: Resentment? Panic? Seriously, why must everything be about fanboyism around here? Why can't some people relax?

Same here. I said they would have access to the whole machine.

Good job MS.

So how does one register?

Will the Unity plugin be free?

I'd be genuinely curious to make a pitch once my game is a bit more in shape.

I think the catch is a 5 year exclusive deal where your game can only be sold on xbox one, and they own your ip :P

Now we just need Phil Fish to come back to games and release Fez 2 on Xbox One. And itd be great to see Jon Blow publish a game there too.

This is really good news!

Excellent. No fees on Xbox and 2500 for a PS4 devkit. MS did something right.

Well, from what we,ve heard and read here og Gaf no idie dev has had to pay for their dev kits. The dev kits have a price, 2500... But so far they haven't had to pay for it.

Yes, this basically seems very similar right now to Sony's approach, but formalised with a specific number. The 2 kits you get are probably loaners...they say if you want more, you buy them.

(I don't know if Sony's policy on loans is formalised or not, but publicly they haven't spoken about how it works/how many can be gotten etc. Maybe behind the scenes there is a universal policy on it.)

That's great news, hopefully the indie devs who weren't happy with the previous policies change their view on the system and we'll see more indie games coming to the system.

This is great news. MS learned from its mistakes ($40k patches, etc.).

I hope XB1 gets great indie titles as a result.

I want new Shadow Complex, Trials, Dust:AET, Mark of the Ninja, etc. types of games on that and every other platform in the future.

Good job MS.

I said at the time it didn't make any sense for it to be just that, but nobody listened.

Let this be a valuable lesson to everybody about not listening to me and how great I am.

I can't wait for J. Blow to spin this announcement as something negative :p

Good news, shame they needed gigantic backlash to set those new policies, they should have been in place and announced 3 months ago.

Great news. Hopefully Sony will also one-up MS on that, until there's no more barriers.
In the near future I'd like to see any retail box as devkits for both consoles.
