Just finished watching it; rented it to watch on my Android phone.

Overall, I thought it was actually really cool. Was suprised that it didn't have as muich action as I thought, but thought it was really neat that they decided to focus on the characters in this one, since this is supposed to be a reboot. Took me until Spock Prime's what J.J Abrams was trying to do with the movie. Was also tweeting while watching the movie and decided to post most of them here (obvious spoilers btw):

one of the best reboots. I love it and it genuinely blew my mind when I watched it for the first time
 
I revisited it and I think its safe to say this is better than Into Darkness. Into Darkness is good but 2009 hit all the right marks, particularly in the action. With the exception of Nero being absent for 20 years, this doesn't have issues in the plot that come off as extremely glaring like those found with Into Darkness.
 
The best thing about ST 2009 was the emphasis on the characters and actually making them interesting and memorable instead of having balls-of-the-wall action for half the movie. Also giving it bonus points for having the technobabble easy to follow and the expositions not go on too long.
 
I had never seen any of the star trek TV shows or movies and had no desire to see this when it came out in theaters. I saw it on DVD like a year ago and I really liked it.

Tons of fun if you don't nitpick it to death and whine about the new and less cerebral direction of the series. The sequel was equal amounts of fun but failed to improve on the weaknesses of the first film. Honestly, I think many of the issues with the first film were forgiven because of how fresh and surprisingly fun the reboot was. Had a blast seeing it opening night after my last AP exam in 2008.

That being said, 2 tailed chicks > she hulk > Alice Eve.

Yeah. Really changed my views on reboots (going from "heck no, they are useless" to "actually, this could stand to have a reboot to have it be realized with modern storytelling").
 
I like how Michael Giacchino worked his own music into the classic theme (a bit weird that the beginning of the classic theme is on one track and the rest on another). Seriously, I love the Star Trek soundtrack.
 
Second film is better. The scripts for these are pretty shitty and are just glaring flaws in logic but the cast and visuals really hold it up as fun summer films

And Benedict cumberbatch pretty much owns the sequel
 
Please don't watch movies for the first time on your phone while tweeting about them. You're not doing the movie or yourself any favors.

I mean, to each their reach, I guess. I'm old and shit. But it doesn't seem like that's the best way to experience the story.
 
Can someone please explain to me why Spock was trying to destroy Romulus in the original timeline?

He says he wasn't, but he clearly was.
 
I couldn't help but think of this image I saw for the first time today (well, with the caption anyway, saw the episode when it originally aired of course) when I read your first sentence.

Not sure if I understand your question correctly but Spock was trying to prevent the sun from going supernova of something like that by using the Red Matter. He was too late though and it destroys Romulus and pulls him into the black hole.
 
The drill is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen in my life. Why not just disconnect it from the ship? Why do they have to shoot it when it's on Earth.

That movie was so amateurish when it came to that whole idea.
 
There are a lot of mistakes and plot holes with the 2009 Star Trek movie, but I still love it and it's a really fun movie to watch.

He wasn't, he was trying to use the red matter stop the supernova but was too late. Apparently red matter can be used to destroy planets too.

Spock wouldn't want to destroy Romulus, he was one of the major players in the Vulcan/Romulan reunification effort.

He was going to put a black hole in Romulus' sun. What do you think would have happened if he succeeded?

"Thank you, Spock, you noble savior! You've given us all another 8 minutes of life before we freeze to death! And then our planet will sent hurling into deep space because we no longer have a sun! How can we ever thank you?"
 
Shitty forgettable bad guy (I like Bana but what a meh character), stupid plot holes. The romulan redesign made them very generic. Oh and seriously what the fuck were they doing for 25 years, just chillin waiting for old Spock? An alright film.

The sequel does everything better. Although Abrams has to get over his "wide shot of enterprise + same piece of music" boner.

It wasn't the Romulan star. It was a star quite a distance away. If you take some external sources (the prequel comics and some other stuff) the Hobus supernova was somehow being fed by any matter it consumed and was able to push its shockwave through subspace at warp speeds. It was because of this that it expanded faster than Spock predicted and destroyed Romulus before he had a chance to stop it. If you go into the Star Trek Online explanation
certain elements in the Romulan government, who were now puppets of the returning Iconians, actually conspired to artificially induce the Hobus supernova.

Oh, okay, I see. That makes more sense then. I doubt the other material can fix every plothole, but that one bugged me in particular.

I believe in the expanded story it stated that Nero and his crew were captured by Klingons and in prison for a good amount of that time.
 
I'd like to think that the red matter was half the plan, and they had a plan for either continuously sustaining Romulus with an artificial sun/something, or giving them time to leave Romulus.
 
I have to wonder why the Romulans didn't evacuate the planet (though maybe they did a partial evacuation but weren't able to get everyone, this isn't very clear besides the fact that Nero's wife was still on the planet so some people obviously weren't evacuated).

Disconnect it from the ship, you mean the first time around when they tried to jumpsuit? The Enterprise wasn't in a position to engage Nero's ship head-on, it would have been destroyed. The jumpsuit stealth mission's purpose was to sabotage the drill and make it look like it malfunctioned on its own.

They shoot it when it's on Earth because 1) The Enterprise is hiding out near Jupiter, out of harm's way of Nero's ship and 2) Spock has control of Spock Prime's ship and thereby, the red matter. With Spock Prime's ship out of Nero's hand as well as the red matter, Spock essentially took away the primary threats.
 
I also just rewatched it. It's simply a really enjoyable time, and an outstanding reboot of the franchise. I think people don't give enough credit to Chris Pine, his charming nature really helps sell the movie. It's a bit strange that he hasn't really been in much besides both ST movies.

Really like Chris Pine. I would recommend Carriers if you haven't seen it already. (Also that train movie, because hey, trains. Also it's fun to watch him try to stay up with Denzel.)
 
A lot of complaints from Star Trek would have been fixed if Abrams hadn't cut the deleted scenes. Not only were crucial scenes cut, also really nice ones about Spock being born and Kirk's childhood that didn't involve racing cars out into cliffs.

Not to mention Klingons!
 
I thought the movie was awesome. Simon Pegg is the greatest comic relief of all time. Glad they picked him as Scotty. Going to see the second one today even knowing there is an awful gratuitous bra scene in it. I will just have to grit my teeth at get through it and hope it doesn't ruin the movie for me.

I'm being facetious
 
The thing I hate MOST about this movie is the fact that some of the cut scenes served to fill in a lot of the major non-science related plotholes if they had been left in.

That said, I fucking love this reboot series so far. I enjoy the characters too much to be offended as a Star Trek nerd.
