It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie - and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.'

We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.

It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, "a tale that grew in the telling."

Cheers,

Peter J

wait. you all constantly bitch about shitty movies coming out all the time and how hollywood never makes anything good, and then when one of the best directors with one of the stories all time is given the oppurtunity to make three more movies, you all bitch?

i hate the internet. i really do. this is gonna be heath ledger as joker all over again.

How does the rumoured 2 extra months of filming stack up to the amount of time they spent on the first two movies? Has a large part of the third already been filmed?

Because I saw King Kong, and the first thing I thought when coming out of that movie was: Man, there was a good hour that he could have cut.

Also, we have read the book, and there isn't three movies worth in there.

I assume some of the content from the second will be held for the third, plus the two extra months of content.

Theres really enough material for 3 movies?

First The Dark Tower was revealed to be what, 2 movies to cover the 7 book series before the project was canned? And now the hobbit is 3 feature length films...

Oh hollywood.

I'll take it. The more the better. Make it four for all I care.

I miss having yearly movies to look forward to. Now that Harry Potter is over this will fill three years.

I'm actually kind of proud that people aren't just willing to start slavering over any idea these guys throw out. It's not like Peter Jackson's infallible, you know. Sure, LOTR was great, but so was Star Wars and then we got the prequels done by the same guy...
