Love the book. I wonder how they will depict his inner thoughts. Also dude was a hindu/christian/ muslim, that might make for some BS controversy.

I think this book could translate to film well if done right. Looking forward to it.

Nice, I also shared the first photo in the other thread. Impressions from CinemaCon first footage below:

@Breznican
Ok, so Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" will be getting a best picture Oscar nomination. The footage screened at #CinemaCon could claim one for short!

@firstshowing:
Most impressive footage - Ang Lee's Life of Pi. Looks magical, wonderful. From what we saw... this is going to be a strong Oscar contender. I just said to @akstanwyck after coming out of Life of Pi footage: "the Oscar race has begun." Her reply "yes it has." Looks wonderful.

@colliderfrosty:
They also premiered footage from the fantastic looking Ang Lee Christmas movie LIFE OF PI. 3d looked great. Looks like this years HUGO. Also LIFE OF PI is an absolute Oscar contender for Best Picture. Looked incredible, magical, and everything you want in a movie.

@slashfilm
Footage from Ang Lee's Life of Pi screened at CinemaCon: full of cinematic magic, wonder. Underwater 3d stuff looks amazing. I know it's too early and stupid to make such claims but I'd be amazed if Life of Pi isn't nominated for Best Picture.

@loquaciousmuse
Wow. Tons of Life of Pi footage just showed. The co-star is a giant cat! Underwater 3D stuff is wow. I teared up a little at the trailer.

@EriktheMovieman
Mark my word, based on the footage shown at #cinemacon Ang Lee's LIFE OF PI is going to be a MAJOR player at this year's Oscars.

@moiseschiu
LIFE OF PI footage absolutely wrecked me. I cried. Choking up thinking about it. This doesn't happen to me. The master at work. #cinemacon

@LynneMcQ:
Ang Lee's LIFE OF PI looks so special, wonderful to hear him speak about it, can't wait to see him bring that book to life #CinemaCon

Good book. This was stuck in developmental hell forever, and it seemed like every big name director was attached at one point. Glad to see it's finally coming out.

Never liked the book that much
but always thought the twist was awesome. Maybe one of the best twists of all time
.

Agreed. I thought it elevated the book to something better than it already was.

A movie based on my favorite book of all time, I can't wait. Seeing it come alive on screen will be magnificent. I wonder how (or if) they will handle the "twist".

I love the book and I'm interested to see how it'll translate to film. Given that the majority of the book takes place between Pi and Richard Parker with little dialogue and mostly just Pi narrating the story and giving his thoughts on things.

YES! I trust this in Ang Lee's hands. The image alone has me excited.

And the ending of the book was spectacular, and elevated it to meta-narrative status.

Wait I'm confused. Tobey Maguire is playing Yann Martel? What's that about? Maybe I just can't remember the book well enough but what role did he have in the actual story?

Weird, I've never read the book, but I actually learned about the plot through something on the internet...forget what site it was, but it was like a comic-style recreation of the book's story. Anyway, the ideas in the book seem like they'd definitely lend well to a movie.

I can't wait to see the meerkat island. I was pissed when I realized that was just made up.

It's framed as the author visiting a Indian man and his family which live in Canada. The old man's house is full of religious artifacts and he begins the narration by saying, "this story will make you believe in God."

The book is fucking amazing. I read it in college and loved it. I really hope this movie is good.

Love the book. I wonder how they will depict his inner thoughts. Also dude was a hindu/christian/ muslim, that might make for some BS controversy.

It's pretty hilarious that hinduism can cause controversy.

I hold the book very near to my heart, so I'm not watching the movie. I made the mistake of watching The Road, and it ruined my memory of the book. However, if they can pull it off it will be a great movie for those who haven't read the book.

Decent book, I read it back when I used to pick up any book that won the Booker Prize...

The same happened to me with The Road, but this one can't be THAT bad, can it?

Isn't it ambiguous whether it is actually a twist, or whether he is illustrating people's willingness to accept violent stories over fantastical ones?

A good book, I never got it as much as other people do. But I'm interested to see how this will turn out. I am worried it will just be 2 hours of pretty visuals, I guess.

Ang Lee did Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, right? I'll pass.

Also I tried to read the book and made it five pages in. Horribly written from what I read.

What the fuck? Of all the complaints I would have with the book, the writing is far, far down the list.

Uh, he also did Hulk and Taking Woodstock!

watch the excellent Ride with the Devil, The Ice Storm and Brokeback Mountain.

Very curious to see (major spoilers)
the man-eating island
on film.

I've not read the book but having read the synopsis
what does this island represent, metaphorically? I'm assuming it didn't really exist. Or maybe the island did exist but not the plants and meerkats?

Wondering if I should read the book before watching this >_< Whelp, I have a lot of time so I'll do what I can. Otherwise I'm excited for this to come out :)

Well the way I saw it was tying into the ending with the whole do you believe the more pleasant but far-fetched story or the unpleasant but grounded one. With the first story, it keeps challenging you with more and more unlikely events, from the Frenchman, to the island. So if you want to believe the first, more pleasant story, you have to be able to take a leap of faith and believe that these fantastical, increasingly unlikely events actually occurred.
That's what I got out of it at least.

But shame on you for reading the synopsis and not the book!

Interesting book, not sure how it can translate to a film. Parallel narratives I guess?

btw that island scene in the book was weird and stood out

Weird,

I just read this book a few months ago, on a whim, not knowing a movie was being made based on it.

Was a fascinating book, and the end just blew my freaking mind.

Read the book, I think it actually could be good. Wonder what stuff will be taken out for the film..

I think an animated version of the film would be cooler

Had to do a report about this book or To Kill a Mocking Bird for my English high school class, decided to go with Pi and it was the best decision I ever made seeing I went back and read the other book and it was the worst shit ever compared to Pi.

Can't wait for the movie.
