Nexon Co., LTD. (“Nexon”) (3659.TO), a worldwide leader in free-to-play online games, today announced that Nexon Korea Corporation (CEO: Min Seo) has partnered with Valve Corporation (CEO: Gabe Newell) to develop Counter-Strike Online 2, the sequel to the highly popular first-person shooter game, Counter-Strike Online.

Nexon Korea and Valve Corporation partnered in 2007 to co-develop Counter-Strike Online, an online version of the first-person multiplayer game Counter-Strike. Tailored for gaming audiences in Asia, Counter-Strike Online is an online phenomenon, reaching 500,000, 70,000 and 50,000 concurrent users in China, Taiwan and Korea, respectively.

Counter-Strike Online 2 will offer enhanced graphics, more realistic gameplay and powerful impact sensations powered by an enhanced version of the Source engine. The game will also feature various game modes enhancing its original game experience with new and improved environments, weapons, equipment customization and more.

Under the terms of the agreement, Nexon Korea will develop and be the exclusive publisher of Counter-Strike Online 2 in Japan, Korea, China and other areas in Southeast Asia. Nexon Korea intends to continue to leverage its proven development expertise and deep understanding of local markets to make Counter-Strike Online 2 one of the leading first-person shooter titles in the region.

Based on CS:GO perhaps..??

I wonder if Valve would bring that one to Steam as one of the Free to play Titles, or keep is Asian Exclusive. It could cause some brand confusion to have two different new CS games released pretty close together.

Why would they jump straight to 3?

This is a direct sequel to their outsourced, asian-market counter strike game.

That's the joke.

Bringing CS:O to Steam would just mean 1.6 purists have two more things to bitch about incessantly.

Who else read that as north korea and valve?

you know damn well that's what I read! I'm telling myself that the thread title was changed.

Anyway, I come from a console background so even with a gaming PC I am deathly afraid of CS. Or Quake. Or Unreal. Or countless others...

... What? Why do you need an outsourced company to make an online version of an online multiplayer game?!

I'm so confused.

It's mostly legal issues, China in specific doesn't allow Western companies to publish games there so you always have to work with a local company that acts as a middleman.

The development they do might be limited to simple localization (and the removal of any reference to skulls) similar to the relation Blizzard and NetEase.com have.

Did that article just list Japan, China, and Korea as being a part of Southeast Asia?

Now that it's all cleared up, this really means South Korea is creating a training simulator for its population to invade North Korea.
