If I recall correctly, it topped out at ~3 million a year ago. I wonder how high it will go after Dota 2 comes out.

Its just gonna keep going up too.

I hope this encourages more developers and partners to get on board with Steam and Steamworks. Today its four million, in a couple more years it should be ten million, by the end of the decade it could be double that and more. Devs, this is a marketplace you'd be insane to ignore.

Dang. Deus Ex and the Black Ops free weekend are probably giving the numbers a good boost.

Absolutely. Things are looking good.

Just recently came back to steam and made a new account after almost 7 years. Made a new PC and hopped on that Deus and Preloaded Dead Island.

Perhaps he forgot his login?
That's a point but I assumed that Steam support would help with that.

I'm curious as I've never known anyone to come back to Steam and make an entirely new account.

Yeah...Dota 2 is going to do insane things to their numbers.

I've said it before but with 30+ million active accounts I now consider Valve to be a player on the level of Sony, MS, and Nintendo

Same.

It's actually my main IM program!
Haha pretty much. The only other IM client I use is Facebook chat, and that's only for like 3 people. Everyone else I message through Steam.

How many guys here registered in 2004? :p Steam has come a long way.

My stats:

Member since: November 16, 2004

Steam Rating: 8.3

Playing time: 26.4 hrs past 2 weeks

I'm sure the playing time will go up with Dead Island.

I did. I came back for the Orange Box in 2007 since I lost my account info for my 2005 steam account.

only 4 million ??

I was thinking there would be way more. like 50 million or so
Time zones and stuff? 4 million people online today right now, but there's more users, they're just not all online at the same time.

Nice, I've been using the service for ~4 years now and can't wait to see what else they have in store.

I would have assumed it a lot more than that.

You've missed the word "concurrent" right?

steam had a good run, long live Origin™.

I trust EA knows how to make money. I trust that they know how to be greedy, and continue being greedy.

But I can't see how 4 million+, damn near, guaranteed sales of your game on steam is a bad thing?

Valve has something really special with Steam. Its smooth, and optimized. A trial by fire for the type of service. ORigin is going to have to go through all the same hiccups and problems steam had, to maybe be where steam is in a few years from now. And even then, people are just getting origin to get BF3, not build origins services which only house a handful of titles.

Its just one of those few times, where i think that I know more than the big corporation. I'm just baffled at EA for their choice, and the long term. Origin is never going to be a steam competitor with just their selection, and its never going to develop by need, as steam has developed. Steam has developed to suit user needs, and demands.

I know steam blew when it first started, but its polished pretty well now, and they keep PC gaming a focus, more so than anyone at this point.

Just for comparison, does anyone know peak numbers for XBL (and maybe Gold specifically)?

Online at the same time? No idea. I'm pretty sure around the release of Black Ops last year I saw in the game that 3 million were playing. That's just 1 game too.

I don't think they've announced it since the end of 2009, when it was 2.2 million.

I'd guess it's somewhere between 3-4 million now.

CoD games go by a 24 hour period though no?
