Sdatcher announced (Kojima and Suda 51 + Yamaoka music, J-radio drama)

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

The surprise announcement Hideo Kojima was teasing for the latest Hideradio podcast ended up being a surprise indeed, although not a game. As reported at Famitsu.com, Kojima announced Suda 51's Sdatcher, an original radio drama.

As the name might suggest, Sdatcher is inspired by Kojima's classic adventure game Snatcher, which was first released in 1988 on the MSX2. Some major names are contributing to the Sdatcher project. Famitsu lists Kojima as the drama's planner, overall director and credited with the original idea. Music is from Grasshopper Manufacture's Akira Yamaoka. Suda 51 is credited with the script.

Sdatcher will be released as part of the 300th broadcast of Hideradio. Today's broadcast was number 296. No specific time frame for the 300th broadcast was announced.

You might recall having heard about a "Project S" at Grasshopper Manufacture's Hopper's Vol.2 event in 2007. Sdatcher is Project S.

Oh.. a radio drama.

Didn't I read a GAFfer predict that earlier today?

EDIT: Oh, it's because it was apparently announced years ago...

I'm just glad Snatcher's legacy lives on! I just kind of wish that, since they're obviously putting some effort into writing this thing and putting the talent together, they could have actually worked a game around the concept and released it on some download service or whatever. But whatever. Maybe everyone will go crazy over this and they'll be forced to re-release the original so everyone "gets" it.

I knew it would be something this lame, what were some of you hoping for?
Two of the biggest Japanese video game directors working on a single project.

I don't think we should assume anything but a game.

Cool! I actually like radio dramas and grew up listening to some in the late 90s-early 00s. Too bad this will probably all be in Japanese.

Looks like SDatcher logo was completely correct.

But radio drama? WHY

I would say this might be Koji's way of gauging interest in a possible Snatcher revival of some sort, it may sound silly to some in certian parts of the world but radio dramas are still pretty big in some countries. Japan, many places in Asia, and Euroland come to mind.

Would not recommend getting your hopes up, but the fact that he's doing anything with the series is a positive sign imo.

So Sudatcher.
Oh, there's a Famitsu article?

スダッチャー instead of スナッチャー. Yeah, now it makes more sense. Here I am, trying to envision it in English like a crazy person. :lol

I don't know how I feel about this. You got Kojima, Suda, Yamaoka making this game on one side and then you got radio drama. I feel indifferent but cant wait to hear more.

So Sudatcher.

Okay, that makes sense.

But that makes it "Suda 51's Sudatcher." according to the article.

Yahtzee was probably right about him being the result of a cloning experiment to create the world's most auteur game designer.

While this is cool, why were they teasing a radio drama FOUR YEARS AGO!?
It's a nice way to turn 'Project S' from a great surprise for Snatcher fans into a let down.

Heh, so many years of tension and effectively it was a radio drama.

Probably Sdatcher will involve Kojima along with his colleagues and closer voice talents acting on it, just like Idea Spy 2.5's radio adaptation. (That one radio drama that was on Ghost Babel, it's mostly a spy parody show with japanese humor). It features Kojima on the starring role along with peeps like Sotaru Tojima, Yumi Kikuchi, Shuyo Murata, and MGS voice alumni.

The theme song is featured on MGS4 as well.

I wonder if Sdatcher will be a parody/tribute inspired on Snatcher or if Suda will deliver some kind of spiritual sequel or prequel of the game.

In any case, looking forward it...
