Are Black People Afraid of Getting Their Feet Wet?

A co-worker just asked me this on my lunch break.

I'm not sure how to respond, but where do people get this stuff?

What a weird question to ask me.

You should've just stared blankly back at them. Let your blinking do the talking. That's usually my reaction to those types of questions.

I think it's alluding to the whole black people can't swim thing.

With maybe a slight dash of Black women not wanting to get their hair wet thrown in for extra flavor.

Or maybe your coworker was referring to the lack of Black entrepreneurs that willingly advertise their ethnicity because of the fear that it will negatively impact their business.

How did he know?!?!?! Our most well kept weakness exposed.

Getting your feet wet is an expression for the first time you try something. So did he mean literally get feet wet or did he mean do they not like trying new things? Though that would be even weirder to ask.

I can't swim but I don't think it has anything to do with me being black...
In the US the stereotype's a result of the systemic issues intertwining race and class- middle-class suburbs are full of nice community pools. Poorer areas? Not so much.

There was a pretty awesome nod in Blackish about this, along with the brief history talking about how public pools in big cities would conveniently close just in certain neighborhoods .

Tell them the fast-twitch muscles in your ankles become hyperactive when exposed to cold temperatures such as commonly found in water, and if your feet get wet you might have a muscle spasm causing you to kick them right in the chin.

I am so thankful that my parents allowed me to go to swimming lessons at the community center on my father's Air Force base when I was 5.

Tell him it's a weird question to ask and what exactly is he getting at. He asked the stupid question so the onus is on him to explain.

Don't feed them after midnight, either.

I never quite got this. All time is after midnight of the day before. Is there a point where you can start feeding again? Like its 7 in the morning, we're good to feed without them turning into monsters.

Respond back saying black peoples greatest weakness is being sprayed by bottled water. That way next time they call the cops on you hopefully the cops will show up with some dasini and shoot you with that instead.

A spinoff of the black folk can't swim stereotype?

Make sure they're aware that if a black woman gets her hair wet after midnight, she turns into a gremlin.

Edit:

How the fuck a gremlin joke get made already? Hate you, GAF.

That's when they'll just blast you with fire hoses and snow makers.

I assume the intent was to say "between the midnight and the sunrise", but that's kind of a mouthful, so "after midnight" sounded better.

Ok black peoples new greatest weakness is cash. The feel of a benjie burns their skin and a washington is god himself curing them of their ailness.

...they'll probably do death by cash papercuts, who am I kidding. If you hate something hard enough you'll find a way to kill with anything.

Yeah that's weird to even contemplate that, let alone ask someone else.

I mean I grew up in nowhere CT and some summer programs would sometimes bring city kids, mostly black kids, up to our town to visit our local lake to go swimming and what not and they would all freak the fuck out, but that's because it's a lake with mud and seaweed and fish and shit in it so they'd all be losing their minds about that. But so would my cousins from LI or NY who only knew pools as well. The idea of swimming in a lake or pond was batshit to them.
