An Open Letter to Bernie Sanders
Dear Senator Sanders,

I’m writing today to urge that you and your campaign immediately halt all negative campaigning against our party’s prospective candidate for the Presidency, Secretary Hillary Clinton.

After first pledging to wage a positive campaign for President, you and your campaign have for weeks now engaged in a relentlessly ugly barrage of false character attacks against Mrs. Clinton, including running negative TV advertising of the sort you promised you never would.

Following the Nevada caucuses, you had the opportunity to live up to the self-professed ideals of your own campaign by delivering an aspirational message of systemic change, but instead you chose to ramp up spurious negative attacks against the winner of those caucuses.

These attacks –- ranging from baseless insinuations that Mrs. Clinton is somehow compromised in her ability to support meaningful reform in the financial sector, when her record shows the opposite, to unfairly impugning her reputation as a true progressive, despite her 40 years of committed, passionate advocacy – must cease.

Your continued suggestions that Mrs. Clinton is untrustworthy and even corrupt – when nothing could be further from the truth – are a threat to our party’s standing, up and down the November ballot.

With Mrs. Clinton now universally recognized as the leading candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination, at this juncture, by staying negative, all you are doing is helping Karl Rove and his ilk do their general election dirty work. In fact, Rove and his wealthy right-wing backers have already spent millions of dollars echoing the smears you and your campaign have unfortunately directed at Mrs. Clinton.

Senator Sanders, I speak for many Clinton supporters in applauding you for raising important issues in this campaign and for helping to engage a new generation of Democratic voters. You and Mrs. Clinton agree on many priorities and goals, and the comparing and contrasting of your respective policies and programs has spurred a robust, healthy debate about how to achieve those critical aims. You can play a constructive role in the party by continuing this substantive dialogue and staying positive for the duration of your campaign.

You and I both know that the stakes for our country are just too high this November – with the Presidency, and control of the Senate and the Supreme Court hanging in the balance – for you to continue to spend your energy and resources on destructive attacks that stand to hurt all Democrats.

Please stop.

Respectfully,

David Brock

Let's dispel this fiction that Hillary Clinton is the only candidate unaffected by millions in campaign donations by the financial sector?

Oh, and Bernie is running a primary campaign against Hillary. It's his job to make the case for himself, and against her, until she secures the nomination. If this helps the GOP, so be it.

The arrogance of this letter -- we're the frontrunners, so you need to get out, because scrutiny is toxic to our candidate -- is pretty gross.

Who's David Brock?

The founder of Media Matters... and also a long-time Hillary supporter who was on the board of one of her Super PACs a few years ago.

I have no problem with Sanders running a negative campaign. Clinton is as well, and that's just politics. All things considered this is nowhere near as bad as 2008, and when the whole nomination is said and done that is all it will be: politics. Nor am I a fan of declaring Clinton the "winner" just yet. At least wait til super Tuesday to do that.

And this is coming from someone who is probably gonna be a Clinton supporter in the primary.

I see... so this is basically just a Hillary supporter supporting Hillary in a condescending way?

Benji why did you put this David Brock in here this is not what we need

Honestly, sanders has a much better chance at beating Hilary than Rubio or Cruz of beating Trump, so talking like Bernie should just give up is kinda... Ugh.

This does not help Hilary at all. All it does is inflame tensions and make it that much harder for Hilary to convince Bernie voters to support her.

I think "positive campaigns" are basically impossible. If you're directly contrasting yourself to someone else and you think their policies are bad, how do you do that positively?

Negative campaigning once meant more that you were attacking the person, well, as a person with innuendo and conspiratorial type connections, or outlandish claims like that they'll legalize murder and rape (John Adams's campaign on the potential election of Jefferson), etc. It's since morphed into anything negative about a candidate.

But you can argue Brock is making the case that Bernie is doing the former by bringing up Hillary's actions.

I mean, I could see it from the perspective of if the situation was "Sanders is clearly, 100% going to lose" and thus negative campaigns at that point just hurt the party, but I think that the letter being phrased in a "shame on you" way and it being simply too early to be making such a request in the first place is when it becomes disrespectful.

"suggestions that Mrs. Clinton is untrustworthy and even corrupt – when nothing could be further from the truth"

That made me chuckle. It's as if it had been written by a teenager on Facebook.

Lol what an idiot.

Screw democracy. Please don't say anything bad about my favourite candidate and just make sure she wins. K? Thx. Oh and same to the Republicans. No negativity about front runner Trump either ok? Cool.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about US politics (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in Europe where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you talk negatively about someone in the US, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the US public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to vote Hilary Clinton, Bernie Sanders or even Democrat at all. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Bernie has alienated an entire population with this move.

Bernie Sanders, publicly apologize and announce your departure from the election or you can kiss your voter base goodbye.

I can't believe your country cannot support Bernie Sanders. He's the only candidate I have ever seen from your country that has the same moral and policy values of the rest of the modern western world. Hillary is as progressive as a tree stump. Your left - right spectrum is so far off.

You guys will be staying behind for a while longer. See you in 2020, hopefully your country gets your shit together to vote in a candidate who can have you guys catch up to us. I just kind of feel bad for the median income or lower Americans who suffer a lower quality of life then the rest of us.

He has progressive ideas but there is no chance in hell that he would be able to get them passed in the Senate even if he were president

But the senate will bend over backwards to work with Hillary!

Seriously, the lack of self awareness of Hilary supporters is astounding.

Bubububu, he'll never get those policies past the most ridiculously obstructionist republican house and senate in the history of the US!

I don't support either. I'm in Canada lmao.

When did I even mention Hillary Clinton in that post. Though I'm sure whatever policies she introduces will be easier for Republican voters to swallow (and that's taking into account the witch hunts and vitriol they have directed at her too)

The way Bernie thinks is enough to give them a heart attack

Though of course this wouldn't be a problem if Dem voters turn up for midterms
