New firmware update, yay. No patchnotes yet, but according to JP website, it's...

Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience

Requires 47MB of free space.

As maintenance isn't over yet I'll say that anyone that doesn't want to update remember the old tubehax DNS will block Wii U updates fine (a red X will appear on the corner of download management when the system tries to update).

Edit: Google translate is better:

The maintenance has got absolutely nothing to do with the update.

The only meaningful change is an update to the Internet Browser. My guess is that they finally are getting around to patching the stagefright vulnerability.

Sorry, I assumed Nintendo Network being down also affected update servers.

We need less Wii U stability updates and more Splatoon stability updates.
The users left with unplayable Splatoon since August would really appreciate that as every match they try will quickly descend into "the connection is unstable".
Yes I know their solution is usually "git gud internet" but that isn't always possible in rural areas.

That came out of nowhere. Guess it fixes the browser?
I just checked some logs. Two tiles changed:
00050010-10041200 is the version number basically and 00050030-1001220a is the internet browser (those are European title IDs, Japan and USA slightly different but same pattern) so yes.

I've had a lot of connection problems with splatoon, but its been a while since the last one. It's been pretty good for a couple of months already.

Maintenance for "certain network services" which is happening right now typically only has to do with game servers. I highly suspect that whoever maintains the maintenance page just got tired of individually listing a dozen or so games every week.

If the update servers are down, then the maintenance would be listed as maintenance for the eShop, Wii Shop Channel, and DSi Shop, since the update servers serve as back end for all of them.

Could it be the new My Nintnedo service implementation stealthily making its way?

Could it be the new My Nintnedo service implementation stealthily making its way?

Seems unlikely. Unless My Nintendo integrates a lot deeper than I'm expecting, game servers probably don't need to be explicitly aware of it. Most of the My Nintendo integration would probably be client-side.

It could potentially be related to Nintendo Accounts, but that would only be if NNIDs are going away completely, which doesn't really seem to be the case.

RIP IOSU hack?

For the record, there's no way this update killed that.

Isn't Wii U browser considered to be the best browser on consoles? (Custom Google search page, however, was a mistake.)
It was the best console score for HTML5 for a while. Now the PS4 and XBone has beaten its score. Its ability to multi-task while watching a video make it my favorite browser though. But I agree, that change to the built-in search engine is really a pain. I bookmarked Google to have easy access.

Super stability update engaged

Nintendo's a damn liar, every other month they keep saying my Wii U is stable but it's obviously not. I'm glad Nintendo makes video games and not bridges.
