Colorado College, a well-ranked liberal arts school in Colorado Springs, suspended a student for six months over a single anonymous comment he made on Yik Yak.

Thaddeus Pryor, a junior at the college, was removed from campus on Nov. 20 because a remark he made on Yik Yak violated the college's policies against "Abusive Behavior" and "Disruption of College Activities." His offense, which he admitted to, was replying to a post tagged "#blackwomenmatter" with, "They matter, they’re just not hot."

Initially, Pryor was booted off campus for 21 months, but the suspension was reduced on appeal this month, according to the Colorado Springs Gazette.

"The six word comment I admitted to writing then deleting shortly after was mean, hurtful, and neither reflective of my character, nor my actual beliefs," Pryor wrote in his appeal. "That being said, I still made the comment, and am deeply sorry for it."

"Sorry I got called out"

People always referring to their ignorant ass shit as "mean, hurtful, and neither reflective of my character, nor my actual beliefs" always cracks me the fuck up. Who you trying to fool with that horse shit.

I can see it in some scenario where it's clear there's some joking going on and everyone is in on it, but many of these apologizes we see aren't that. Bullshit to the fullest.

Tiara Harris tho

This is a good reason to stay off social media.

Getting fired or suspended from work or school for posting a dumb comment just seems insane.

Isn't it worse if he was joking? Colleges probably shouldn't be suspending students for who they're attracted or not attracted to.

Or he could stay on social media and not be an ass. It's surprisingly easy to do.

EDIT: To elaborate, it's not like someone overheard him talking to a friend and reported it. He posted it on a public forum that anyone (and everyone) can read. People have got to understand that stuff they post online isn't private, he might as well have tacked a flier with the comment on a bulletin board in the student union.

The "that six word comment" was obviously purposefully thrown in to downplay the offense as well.

However whether he is genuine or not he is paying for what he said more than most ever do; so I'd like to hope he at least gets a chance to redeam himself. Internet shaming could haunt him forever. A bit of defensiveness in an apology and some cliche's are hardly suprising; months or years from now he may feel more genuinely regretful, and I don't think his offense was so bad to start assuming he wouldn't.

I am so glad social media was not as pervasive when I was in college. I never said anything along the lines of "black women aren't hot" (because who honestly believes that?), but I said plenty of stupid shit when I was young and dumb and drunk. I just never had to deal with a permanent public source all those dumb comments would be saved to. Several months of suspension over a stupid (and since deleted) comment is absurd. People have to be forgiven for saying ignorant things; the whole point of an educational institution is to show why such thinking is wrong, not ban the words from being spoken in the first place.

Also, quick note to everyone on planet Earth: if you're going to drink, disconnect the Internet and hide your phone. The stupid shit you say in a bar or in your living room to disinterested friends/strangers is fine, but now that you can do it online, it is permanent, the exact wrong people will see it, and it will get you suspended, fired, divorced and arrested. Don't even risk it.

Out of curiosity, would it have made a difference if he had said that he doesn't find black women hot vs. saying that they straight up aren't hot?

In terms of offensiveness? Maybe. But then you still have to ask yourself what's on his mind if his reaction to Black Lives Matter is "yeah they matter but I don't find them hot" that's not really a much better position

So, every comedian, writer, dark satirist are all fucking ignorant assholes?

It's better but it's still an unnecessary generalisation along racial lines. The best option is not to belittle a group of people because you don't find them attractive.

I don't think having an unpopular opinion makes you an ass.

He didn't say he hates black people, he's just not attracted to them.

He's entitled to his opinion even if you think it's wrong.

For the Record - I think black girls are sexy so I'm not agreeing with him.

other than the blacklivesmatter conflation (basically using it to put down that movement), this sort of statement is pretty common on online dating profiles, but there's hardly much outrage there.

definitely depends on when and where you are saying this stuff whether or not you're going to get dinged for it.

Dang that's rough. Yeah he said something dumb, but putting his education on hold for so long isn't exactly the best way to combat ignorance, which thrives in isolation and the absence of education.

I disagree, she brown I'm down. Seems kind of a harsh punishment for a comment on that level, but it's the schools call. Hopefully it teaches the kid to evaluate more what he wants to say before saying it.

He agreed to go to the college under certain conditions, which likely included an Honour Code perhaps, a agreement to respect a Moral Code the school follows maybe. Every college has some terms of agreement that can be broken and duly punished. I do not feel this was unjust, nor do I feel his apology was necessarily sincere. The reduction is also fine with me, perhaps when he returns, he'll have learned a lesson.

He responded to a Black Lives Matter thing with a comment that managed to jam both racism and sexism into just 6 words. In that context the rephrasing wouldn't have helped much.

He's wrong, racist, and stupid... But he shouldn't be suspended.

Not really a good reason to suspend him, but as it's a private liberal arts college, not a public university, it's their call.
He's still paying tuition though... If he gets suspended for something like this, imagine how strong censorship can be on any given paper or open opinion in class. He should be debated with and shown why he's ignorant but not suspended. And showing pics of smoking Black women doesn't relate to what he's saying, I'm sure he's dissing the majority of Black women.

He's wrong, and the thread will probably end up locked because of the pictures posted to prove it, but do people think colleges should be kicking out students for unpopular opinions? I don't think this quite rises to the level of "hate speech."
