How To Distort The Image For PS2 Games On PS4 Into Stretched Widescreen

[EDIT] Never knew that many people didn't like the stretching lol. It's just something I always like to do (and some people in this thread too) on my PS1/2 classics on PS3 when playing in splitscreen mode. This meant my brothers and I could have a bigger area of the screen to ourselves and therefore not need to sit as close to the TV screen.

Despite such backfire (some of the images were pretty hilarious tho lol), this thread still shows an option for those who want to stretch the image a tad wider. Some people don't like that, and that's understandable but this is just an option for those who want to. Thanks. [/EDIT]

Hey all,

So I thought this thread may be of use to a few people considering the complaints regarding the PS2 games not running at a full 16:9/widescreen option on the PS4. If that is the case, the way you can easily fix this is by going on the PS4 Settings Menu ----> Sound and Screen ----> Display Area Settings and then maximizing the area to the edges of your TV screen to where you want. You can also use your TV settings and toggle around with "wide, zoom, cinema" etc to mess around with what image you're comfortable with; I know I used the latter on some PS1/2 classics on PS3, then changed back to native display when I played PS3 games. It worked well IMO.

So to summarise: you can adjust the display area of the game screen to match the TV screen. Select [Settings] > [Sound and Screen] > [Display Area Settings] and then manually adjust the bordered area to where you see fit.

I hope this helps!

I don't understand. How does this get rid of the black bars or make the image widescreen? No matter how much tweaking I do I can't get rid of the black bars.

Is this for stretching a 4:3 image? Because why would you want a stretched out image?

I guess this makes more sense if the game supports widescreen aspect ratios though. There weren't many on the ps2 that did if I recall

People. Please don't do this lol. You're just stretching the fuck out of your image.

Let me explain to the kids here, that during this time, tv's were square shaped...not rectangles.

Reminder: people stretching 4:3 images to fit a widescreen display aren't going to hurt you. They may like it better that way. Get over it.

Won't this butcher the image quality of any PS4 games you want to play as well as the PS2 ones? I'd just put up with the black bars.

I think you would be better off stretching the image with your TV just for the sake of it being faster.

Well for PS2...since the res is much higher, they'll be a lot less affected than if you widescreened a below 480i image.

It might still look somewhat stretched, but not all that bad.

Of course your talking to a guy who doesn't have an issue widescreening his native PS2 games on an HDTV via component

Because some people prefer that and I want to show them how to do it?
Huh? Who prefers it? People prefer to have their tv image look fucked up?
Because that how anamorphic widescreen works, all 3 GTA games support it, and Sony didn't want to take the time to make 3/8 games work correctly on a modern tv by adjusting the output.
I know up through VC anamorphic was a hacky setup. You lost picture with it. Not sure about SA. GTA3 and VC you're better off playing with black bars in 4:3.

So you'd rather look at fucked up distorted graphics than have black bars with a solid image?

Wow

Looking at it on a TV, it only looks slightly distorted. For those of us who are not hyper sensitive to that sort of thing, its an option

Can someone please give examples for those who aren't sure why it isnr the best idea.

Not saying you shouldn't do it but if strongly suggest against it.

Personally, I hate when games are not full screen. I will always stretch an image if I am able as it never bothers me at all. Thanks op!

I always enjoy the old, "Man, that actor has let himself go, look how fat he is." No mom, you just have your TV set up to stretch the image.

I do. Thank you OP.

You're welcome guys, I'm happy to see some help has came out of this thread. If people don't like it, then they are free to not choose that option. I'm just showing people how to do it if they'd like to, as I did it with my PS1/2 classics on PS3 and didn't find a problem. I also used the wide screen (rather than native option) on my TV when playing the classics then changed back when playing PS3 games.

I do agree that the title needs a bit of changing however, which is why I'm open to taking ideas on what to change it to so I can PM a mod.
