Fallout 4 PS4 vs Xbox One Frame-Rate Stress Tests - Digital Foundry

[EDIT] Full Face-Off is up, you can check out my thread on it here [/EDIT]

Hey guys,

Thought this was thread worthy as Digital Foundry have just further updated their article with another frame rate analysis. This time it's more of a stress test that tests parts of the game that are further on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q894F3TPXeU

You can view the full article here, but to quote:

"Since our initial analysis, we've put more time into Fallout 4, and we've been able to isolate a number of spots that really challenge the engine. In particular the Corvega factory is a rough spot, and PS4 takes the brunt of the hit once we reach its rooftops (down to 15fps). Both machines also suffer long drops to 20fps in certain interior battles. Time will tell just how far-reaching these trouble spots are throughout the game, particularly once more hours tally up. In the meantime, we'll update soon with a full Face-Off, taking a deeper dive into the specific ins and outs of each platform..."

It also dips in uexpected places (e.g. indoors) where you wouldn't expect the frame rate to tank to begin with. It's obviously not a hardware fault.

So overall, I think it's clear the engine needs changing as it won't cut it in time for the next TES game. There will definitely be more of an outcry if there is a repeat of Fallout 4

That difference makes very little sense. :(

something something solid 30

And people will keep buying and defending the game regardless.

I can attest to the Corvega factory roof on ps4...I've never experienced anything like it this gen. Thankfully it's the only problem I've had this far

corvega factory roof is also a bane of the pc world, so this is probably an engine wide problem rather than a console specific one. (that said it runs fine on my pc) but the performance thread is full of complaints about that area.

Again. An average playthrough of a Bethesda RPG has too many variables that might influence framerate that it's nigh impossible to compare.

I was hoping they'd do very controlled tests with identical playthroughs and interactions on both consoles. You'd think they would at least get the time of day correct.

Boot the game on both consoles. Create the default character and roam around in the same fixed areas at similar TOD, engage in similar encounters, wear the same equipment, finish the same quests, interact with the same objects. Then compare it side-to-side.

This engine is fucked up enough that save file sizes could literally impact PS3 performance back with Skyrim. You got to remove some of the variables.

Likely the CPU causing the issues guys so you'd expect both to show inconsistent results across platforms and individual play sessions honestly.

Corvega Factory made my 980Ti drop to 40fps. And also downtown Boston. The rest of the map so far 60fps. Not too bad.

From what I've seen of the game on PC, it seems the amount of geometry being drawn at once is the biggest problem. That area shown in the video is particularly problematic on my CPU load.
However on the consoles, it seems even indoor areas are taking pretty big hits.

Both inside and outside the Corvega factory have been really bad FPS wise and actually felt worse than what the Digital Foundry video shows, especially inside the factory (I'm on PS4)

I even had major FPS drop when I first got the minigun for the Power Armor and even had a weird bug with the smoke effect when the car explodes just before Deathclaw emerges from underground and the subsequent explosion. .webm example posted below.

Well they've done it. Aside from The Last Tinker, Fallout 4 is likely the worst performing game on current consoles.

I definitely had a rough time with the PS4 frame rate in and on the Corvega Factory. It's a shame too because that would be an amazing area otherwise.

Tbf, that's only showing one part of the video. There are others where XB1 struggles more.

But it shouldn't have to be about which consoles is less crap lol, it should be how shi*ty Besthesda's engine is lol.
No I meant for that specific instance, i'm trying to figure out what exactly is happening that would be causing a performance issue that severe.

I'm glad someone else can testify to the awfulness of Last Tinker. I couldn't play it because it gave me a brutal headachewithin 10 minutes and I've gotten through a fair share of poor performing games before.

I know this is a console thread but I've had issues on that exact same spot on my PC rocking a 980Ti and i7 4790k, something about the top of that building the engine just buckles. More on topic not sure why the interiors are having any issues... The game outside doesn't look half as bad as many people would have you believe but some of the interior areas are pretty ugly indeed.

That's godawful. If you're gonna put out console versions, they should be at least technology competent. e: err, if you put out a video game, they should be technologically competent, to be more broad and accurate.

I just did the factory part last night. I'm not too good at noticing frame drops though. It seems hard to do a direct comparison because it's almost impossible to set up two identical game worlds.

Corvega does indeed run poorly on PC too (though not 15 FPS poorly). They probably went overboard on the amount of enemies and how far apart they were or something. Just being around the general area means there's like 20ish enemies to track (even if they're not directly engaged in combat with you) in addition to enemies in the general Lexington area.

Nawww man Pete Hines played it, it was a solid 30fps!!

What would they need to say? Apologize like decent developers?

Nawwww

He must have just stood in the same spot.

While it's not a complete game killer, it is an issue, and I can't understand how anyone who's played it didn't notice it.

It's almost as if different systems on the same platform are performing differently.
