A 17-year-old boy died after reportedly playing an online computer game for 22 days straight. The young man had broken his leg and was bored at home, using video games to pass the time.

The teen, known as Rustam, only stopped playing Defence of the Ancients when he had to sleep and eat. According to investigators, the teen spent more than 2,000 hours playing the game in the past year and a half.

Doctors say that Rustam may have died from second class syndrome, thrombosis. This occurs when people stay still for a long period of time without moving around to keep blood flowing. Police spokesperson Svetlana Abramova said:

Sad story but not the first time something like this has happened. I remember being addicted to games as a kid but I could never imagine myself getting to the point of death from lack of movement. Does this happen with TV addiction?

wow, that's way too young. RIP

I've binged for similar amounts of time, but was able to at least move around and take a few breaks for my sanity. Looks like he didn't have much of an option in this case.

There have been a few cases in Japanese/Korean computer shops, for those folks playing 40+ hrs straight. Usually it's thrombosis or embolism

Headline should day: "Teen dies from condition related to not moving around much at all for 22 days." Video games were not the cause of death.

Playing video games for extended periods of time has been known to lead to death, sadly. Maybe not the game itself, but lack of movement. This isn't the first time I've heard of this. Last one I heard was related to WoW.

w.r.t gaming, especially online gaming, you usually hear these coming out of China or South East Asia because of gaming culture variations, but it sucks anywhere in the world really.

There's really no need to be so defensive here. No one's really blaming video games. It's just a relevant fact in the story.

It doesn't really have much to do with playing video games. Sitting still for that long is unhealthy regardless of what you're doing. It's too bad he didn't move around much.

Thrombosis is a big risk when you have an injury that limits movement as it is.

You would think that a doctor would mention it, but if you're at the position of playing a game for 22 days straight, I'm sure you're not worried about what a doctor says.

I mean - videogames were the addictive factor here that caused the lack of movement. Addiction is real.

I have long wanted Valve to implement some sort of maximum play time feature. Be it self imposed or on a parental level. I suppose they're against it. I've recently had to quit Dota because of health reasons. It's a game that can become so all encompassing. Maybe Valve will consider some health warnings after this death.

You just wasted four thousand hours you could have spent having sex.

Not defensive at all. It's just the easy headline causing the average uninformed person to go "see, I knew video games were trouble".

I'm a grown man so I don't feel the need to constantly defend this hobby. I just think context matters.

They really ought to teach kids the dangers of thrombosis sooner or better.

Or the parents. At least the hospital should have reminded either.

WTF this is a thing? I've done two straight days gaming. How does this work when sleeping can you die from sleeping too long?

take a break, walk around.

Also important in long distance flights, might even take a thrombosis syringe for that

Sad, and a reminder to similarly minded MOBA fans not to put thousands of hours into a video game if you aren't going to take breaks regularly and exercise every day.

I wanted to pop in with the usual, "What were they thinking?" but they truly had it rough. And they were younger than me. :/

Rest in peace, and condolences to his family.

I pity you and im jelaous at the same time.

It's ok I'm a virgin.

Funny (or sad) part is that counter has maybe only gone up 12 hours since April this year (mostly for TI5 spectating) so it was 3800 hours in a more condensed period of time.

I don't know how this is a thing in the age of internet porn. Surely even masturbating will give you enough movement to not die.

First heard of this a couple years ago. Whenever I sit still for an extended period (an hour or two), I get paranoid and force myself to walk around for a few minutes.

What the fuck, every time you get leg injuries and can't move around, the doctors should give you Clexane or other anti-thrombosis measures.

Sounds similar to stories out of gaming cafe's in Japan/Korea/China. People end up marathoning themselves to death.

While videogames are not directly to blame, there really needs to be more awareness.

What the fuck, how is there not some electrode thing you can strap on your leg to simulate walking around?!

You don't just TAKE A BREAK from playing dota jesus

No lovonox or epinephrine shots?
(Blood thinner)

My leg broke too, sent home, was prescribed those even with super limited mobility

Had Spinal Stenosis surgery, and I get 2 shots daily in the hospital, I'm super immobile, but moved in bed/wheelchair

To his (and my) defense for his dota hours:

30 percent of that time was probably spent in queues (more if he played a few years ago) and the game keeps tracking the time you're tabbed out doing other shit:p

I have 3000 hours in dota over the past 3.5 years but maybe a third of that was spent playing, the rest is afk/leaving the pc with dota as one of the open tabs while sleeping or just doing other shit while the game is queueing and queueing and queuing some more (to then find a match, have some clown fail to load or abandon and start the process all over again)

^This. Thrombosis is much more common in people with broken legs, so saying "dota killed this boy" is disingenuous at best.

We can assume he was a virgin? No GF or actual friends?

Just...what dude? You can have a sex and still be unhealthily addicted to videogames. Or you can be a virgin and be fit and healthy as fuck.

Eitherways yeah looks like he did not enjoy much of a social life, but we could be wrong. For all we know he played videogames with his friends.

How much exercise is enough to avoid it? Just going around the house every x hours is enough? Because even moving around for a bit seems like not a very easy thing to do in his situation.

Pretty sure he was joking.
