In 2002, NVIDIA released a demo called Dawn to demonstrate the power and programmability of GeForce FX. It showcased a fairy character of extraordinary detail, seamless curves, and lifelike expressions. Among the many technology demos NVIDIA has released before and since, Dawn has remained the most memorable. It was the first time a fully animated and totally credible character was brought to life in real time. Even today, many games have yet to realize a character with Dawn's level of detail.

Fast forward ten years, and NVIDIA has brought back Dawn once again, in a demo simply titled "A New Dawn." A New Dawn is designed to showcase the graphical possibilities on the latest generation of Kepler based GPUs.

A New Dawn demo was developed to showcase the performance of the GeForce GTX 690. As such, two GeForce GTX 600 series GPUs are recommended for the best experience.

GPU: GTX 670 SLI or higher
CPU: 2.5GHz dual-core or higher
System Memory: 4GB
Disk Space: 1GB
Operating System: Windows 7/Vista

The downloadable demo of A New Dawn will be released on GeForce.com later this month.

Fairies, as we all know, live in the depth of mysterious forests, but for Dawn, her home was a giant glowing cube map—a six-sided texture that represented the environment around her. She had no trees to climb, no bees or butterflies to play with. She was a very lonely fairy.

I thought the hair was great.
 
Running at 7-10 frames per second at 1024x768 on my GTX 570/E6600 2.4GHz/4GB DDR-2 800MHz setup. 4-7fps at 1600x1200.

They weren't joking about the system requirements.


There is a big difference, but I expected more over a ten tear period.
Dawn swimming in a pool with realistic fluid and cloth physics.
 
Ran it earlier on a gtx 580, looked about 30fps with drops to 15fps at 720p.

Lighting and skin is amazing, the lighting shining through the hair being a huge highlight for me :)
 
I'm really surprised nVidia didn't use this chance to tout their new TXAA technology. FXAA is an abomination :/

My gripes aside, those screens look amazing! I'll try it on my 680 when I get home.
 
Looks good.

But I'm not that impressed to be honest.. despite all the magic that's supposed to be going on there.

Trying to remember when the last time was that a tech demo really wowed me
 
Massively underwhelming for a graphics demo during this generation of GPUs. Looks like something that's one or even two generations old.
 
The vines growing around the tree is probably the most impressive use of tessellation to date. Shape changing geometry in real time is where the future of tessellation lies.
 
Just tried it out on my GTX 470 SLI. I am convinced it would run much better if I was not going above my VRAM. Oh sadface.

In motion it is really spectacular though. her hair filters the colors behind it really realistically. Looks incredible IMO.

Nvidia does this in order to advertise their new products. In this case, the 670. The demo is made ground-up for 670-SLI. If it were optimized for other cards, it could very well run on them. Probably not as smoothly, but definitely not as badly as it does on anything less than a 670-SLI :P


They will next-generation, hopefully.

Lol. Next-gen consoles won't be able to push the amount of detail and all of the technical stuff going on in this demo. You'll get beautiful looking games, but this demo is in a different territory, technically speaking. On top of that, it's only a simple tech-demo. A game environment is much more demanding.
 
I actually like the hair. The character animations are really stale, as to be expected, but the hair seems to react as it should.

Comparing the video to the screenshots really goes to show just how much of an affect resolution and AA have on a game.

It looks like hair from old hair tech demos... Like ... Neat in motion but totally incorrect

It's delayed, it goes far beyond how hair at that length moves for minute movements

It's like a gelatinous mass

The definition of UNCANNY VALLEY.

fortunately this is only a tech demo, we will have better people representation will less details and expensive effects on next gen.
 
Wow, people don't like this demo? Lol, there's going to be alot of disappointed people next gen. Really, alot.


The use of sub surface shaders and full environment tessellation is impressive to me. There's also some GPGPU accelerated particle effects that even bounce back light on the main character (global illumination?).
