All-Star Batman |OT| The Court of Snyder

In 2011 Scott Snyder took over the main Batman book and brought it to new heights with arcs like Court of Owls, Zero Year and more. With the book being relaunched following DC Rebirth(with new writer ex-CIA agent Tom King) and Snyder's main artist and good friend Greg Capullo busy with Mark Millar for a year, Snyder wanted to do something else.

Thus, All-Star Batman.

Here's part of an interview with Snyder back when the project was announced which should explain most of what the book is:
Newsarama: Scott, let’s talk about All-Star Batman. You dropped a lot of hints at C2E2 about what your Rebirth project would be, and so this title makes a lot of sense. In a way, it almost feels like a victory lap, coming after your incredibly successful relaunch of Batman in the "New 52." Do you see this as the next chapter of your Batman story?

Scott Snyder: Yeah, I didn’t want to do something that would be repetitive where I felt like, if Greg Capullo was leaving the book, it wouldn’t be right for me to do another Batman #1. And knowing they were thinking about Tom King coming over, I became very vocal about him taking the book because I knew he would do an amazing job. And he’s going to. I think he’s the best up-and-coming writer in comics, and Batman is gonna be great.

But I was like, “What does that leave me when I have all these stories I want to do, particularly with all the villains?” And I started coming up with this idea back in August, where I started thinking, what if I do a series where I invite some of the best artists in the series in to do Batman stories, but in continuity with All-Star Batman for the first time ever, make it a new ongoing series that allows me to work with different artists. So it’s not really the same thing that allowed me to work with one guy the way I did with Greg, but I’m working on every villain with a different artist that’s paired to them, that loves that villain and has a new idea for how to do them. The way we revamped Joker, John Romita, Jr. is revamping Two-Face. And all of that’s in continuity, so when they show up in other books, they’ll look like these character you see in All-Star Batman.

Their origins are the same, nothing is changing, in the way that Rebirth isn’t changing the origins of characters, we’re not. But it’s the same thing we did with the Joker where we didn’t change what came before with him, but we introduced him in a way you hadn’t seen before. So I was like, if I can get John to do an arc with me, and I can get Sean Murphy to do an arc with me, and Jock? I got my anchors. So I couldn’t have been more excited when they all said they could do some stuff together. Really, the big anchors for me are John and Sean. Jock is doing a smaller one in the middle. It really is a dream series. I started inviting people like Declan Shalvey, Francesco Francavilla is doing a part with Jock, so we’re getting our “Black Mirror” team back together. Tula Lotay is doing Poison Ivy. Afua Richardson, who has become a friend and someone I admire so much, is gonna do one. So for me it’s just inviting in some of the best in the business, up-and-comers and rock stars, to reinvent Gotham a bit, and do stuff that matters in continuity. Give fans a different flavor than Batman, because Tom’s just gonna kill it on Batman.

So to start things off we have issue 1 which comes out 10/8 which a preview has been released for:

"My Own Worst Enemy" part one! Superstar writer Scott Snyder explodes into an all-new Batman series alongside legendary artist John Romita Jr., reimagining some of the Dark Knight’s greatest villains. First up: Two-Face! Batman must take Two-Face to a destination out of Gotham City, but the duplicitous villain has a two of spades up his sleeve. Every assassin, bounty hunter and ordinary citizen with something to hide is on their tails with one goal: kill Batman! Handcuffed together on the road to hell, this is Batman and Two-Face as you’ve never seen them before!

There is something off about the cover. Why is the right wing on his bat symbol larger despite it being farther away?

Yep he's arguably their biggest name now and delivers without a doubt on their biggest book.
Once Capullo is back he and Snyder have a secret project to reveal. People are guessing it's a team book.
4.99? Comics are getting expensive.
Pretty much the only DC ongoing that'll be that price. Everything else is pretty much 2.99. This isn't Marvel where everything is 4.99 or 5.99 when things aren't on sale.

Hopefully this is more court of owls, zero year and death of the family and less end game and gordonbot.

Snyder has done some classic Batman stories but his last two were a bit forgettable.

Yeah, I don't think he's really matched The Black Mirror or Court of Owls, but I am still excited for this.

Snyder always comes across as a really nice guy as well.

I'll miss Capullo greatly as his style is as iconic to me now as BTAS, but the art is still good. Snyder's Batman run is my fave run of Batman period so I'm hyped for this one.

I'm not that big of a fan of Snyder actually, I find him to be a little bit overrated. His Batman stories always had a great premise but they never really paid off.

The reason I'm excited for All-Star Batman is Romita Jr. Despite his lineage, that man was born to draw DC characters. He was robbed of a great Superman run because of a bunch of worthless crossovers but I can't wait to see what he does on All-Star and I hope he will get a crack at Justice League at some point.

Excited to check it out. I also love Romita Jr's art. (i know it's not everyone's cup of tea)

Mostly waiting for the Snyder and Murphy team up. The Wake was incredible and Murphy is all around my favorite artist by far.

Snyder lost me with his New 52 run. I didn't care for his Swamp Thing run, either.

Black Mirror, however, was, and still is, awesome.

I'll probably give this a shot for the first few issues. If it is no good, I can just reread Black Mirror.

At the time they were ending their run everyone was saying Justice League, since Capullo had just drawn the entire league for Endgame.

So flipping excited for this. Snyder is the best writer for Bats, imho.

Court of Owls, Endgame and Superheavy are truly phenomenal arcs.

The superior Snyder.

Been looking forward to this. I loved his Batman run, albeit Super Heavy was a bit weak for my personal interest.

The effect is off/exageratted, but I think it's supposed to be going down the middle of his chest, with the angle making the right side more visible. Kind of like this:

JRJR's art is great but Snyder's vice for Bruce in this completely wrong, it's like he's actually channeling ASBAR.

I don't usually like JR Jr's art (although I didn't mind it in Kick-Ass). That cover looks awful, but the interior art actually seems okay. Might be the same way I don't particularly care for David Finch's art, but the interiors in Batman so far haven't put me off.

Looks like I'll have to pick it up tomorrow.
