Steam's Big Picture Mode beta starts Monday Sep 10th [out now]

So when zooming into websites, is it all jittery for you guys too??

Also, this has huge problems with games that ask stupid questions before running, like Saints Row 3 asking for DX 9 or 11, gotta go run for the mouse once that happens :(

That background looks terrible. You should be able choose your own background, if not cycle through your screenshots or something.

There's a few layers of animation moving over the entire thing, it's not a static screen. The tiles are relevant to what's actually new in the store as well so there's function in it as well.

In console (~):
downloadspage_simulate - simulate downloads (it downloads Counter Strike and Team Fortress 1 for me (these games were already in my library)
stats_dump - statistics
stats_gui - stats in gui tree

parameters for steam:
-tenfoot Start in Steam Big Picture mode
-bigpicture -720p Run tenfoot in 720p rather than 1080p
-fulldesktopres Run tenfoot in full desktop resolution rather than 1080p, overrides -720p as well

Some people might find this useful. If you don't have a game installed, you just click the button that would usually say play, it says Install instead. You click it once and it starts installing.

No extra menus or anything.

They need to include the option to start BPM on a secondary screen.

Yeah, I think this thing is generally good enough - as soon as the custom grid icons are sorted out, I'm using it! :D

:/ It's a beta after all.

Yea, I'm more disappointed because I was curious to see what it was like than expecting it to work perfectly.

Oh well...hopefully they patch it soon.

Yes! Steam overlay on Guide button

The ambient audio is really neat.

I'm totally digging BPM. This goes perfect with big TVs
and the Steambox
.

Yeah having an option to default BPM to a particular screen would be handy, with my TV plugged I'm juggling between 4 screens now, 'windows key + p' is handy but still a pain.

Just checked and no issues. But it can be kind of resource heavy on the GPU, so maybe that's the issue?

Yup, jittery as a bug here.

Here are some things I found while digging through BPM's files:

If someone tells my the XINPUT values for the D-Pad we have D-Pad navigation :D
Also the entire BPM UI seems to be made with CSS, so we could see major custom UIs too!

Digging around those files a little more led me to this:

GOT D-PAD NAVIGATION WORKING!

In keybinds.cfg (inside .../Steam/tenfoot/resource/), just add this:

// keybinds go here
pad_left MoveLeft
pad_right MoveRight
pad_up MoveUp
pad_down MoveDown

I believe the issue with that is that each and every game would need to support this. Steam itself couldn't force every game to start on the second monitor.

I thought this was awesome until I went to buy a game.

What the hell? To confirm, this did NOT happen in normal mode.

Thanks, that led me to this:

very nice. Works perfectly.

Big picture mode tax. :o

Windows really needs to have more native multi-monitor options, a lot of enthusiasts use multiple screens these days, letting you change the 'numbered' priority of your displays would be a good start, my TV is display number '1' which is bloody pain and it's not easy to change.

If they can just add controller emulation like xpadder and some sort of keyboard input solution for passwords and stuff this thing would be a lot better. Like a lot of the free 2 play stuff has 360 support by default, but all of them will make you stuck for the password.

And it'd be great if they let me set up and save a couple of controller modes for my point and click adventures and my old school single player FPSs.

Luckily I already have the xpadder know how to play everything possible with a 360 controller on a couch and a wireless keyboard and mouse to get past the other stuff, but other's might not be so lucky.

Also 360 headset support could be pretty cool.

To the Valve-ians out there in the know, may I ask:

- Although k/m may not be offered by default, but I presume every game will support it, correct?

-...because these are the same exact copy of games in their PC Steam library, no?

- There is no game-streaming (ala Gakai/On Live 2), right?

- Would the living room crowed be able to join their PC crowed in online gaming? Or will this living room offer have its exclusive club too? I hate exclusivity on principle (but not availability).

- Will they offer all the steam features and functions like being able to take pics/vids of your game, the community, store options like gifting, etc.?

I'd like to also add that having default pad support with PC grade-spec (I'm fine with however far or near they'll willing to push it since it can't be worse than consoles) spectacles of gaming, I will definitely buy one faster than you can say 'Steam Sale!'

Feep Visa card ends with 6216.

I got you now.
Only literally one trillion combinations of numbers left to try!

Quadrillion with CVG code...and let's say 36 quadrillion with the expiration date, assuming it's in the next three years. (It is.)

-fulldesktopres Run tenfoot in full desktop resolution rather than 1080p, overrides -720p as well

I'm completely lost with this kind of stuff. I want to start the program in big picture mode, so where do I type the "-tenfoot" command? I tried in my shortcut on the start menu but an error keeps popping up. Then I went to the program file in the Steam folder and couldn't find anywhere to type.

I have an optimus system and when I exit out of BPM it still uses my GPU when I'm in the regular desktop version. hmm

- Keyboard and mouse controls are actually supported to navigate BPM
- Once in game, you use the same control scheme as you would have used if you were playing them through regular Steam -- the games themselves are unchanged, only how you launch them
- Steam is not a gaming steaming service. You download the games to your machine and play them on your own hardware. The only "streaming" that goes on is if you watch game trailers.

I have already stolen your identity, Jason. Muahahahaha!!
