See, that's a pretty excellent top 20 as well. It does lean heavily towards the most well known shows, but they are all very good works.

I mean we got Ghibli, Akira, Bebop, FLCL, Eva, One Piece, Monster, GurrenLagann, Planetes (getting some love!), Eureka 7 etc.

People like all those shows a lot.

All this grudge towards Death Note... I can't remember (or wasn't around for) GAF's impressions about this series, but I think it got a very positive reception? Why the sudden change... or has it been hated all this time?

And just in case, I haven't watched it and I'm not interested in it.
It's because of that certain event that happened past episode 26 or so. But i like the show, actually somewhat consider the show a guilty pleasure almost. I just can't get enough of the melodramatics, despite how ridiculous it gets at times.:lol

That list still holds up pretty well.
I don't agree with the rankings, but it certainly covers a lot of good shows. Except for elfen lied.:lol

Yeah WTF is that about. Ah well, outliers and all that!

I don't watch that much anime, but that list goes crazy after the first 15 positions. :lol

Once again, not that crazy. I don't enjoy Haruhi but I know why it's up there, for instance.

Also, subjective tastes make a subjective list. Go figure.

Popular series tend to gather hate?

As for Death Note, it's decent enough. I enjoyed it for what it was not having read the manga at the time. I didn't obsess over it like some people though... so I can understand why people could dislike it because of that.

And once again I'm reminded why I have to be careful with GAF's tendencies/hype/etc.... (... I was expecting that answer, but not that direct :lol )

GAF's 100 anime list said:

People should push through more of Trapeze, it was a good show in all regards, and the character threads came together nicely. Nothing aimless about it.

I watched the first episode and disliked it (mostly because of visual style though).... then gave it another chance months later and loved it.
Some episodes of Trapeze are really awesome and had me laughing for a good while.

Well duh but it's still sad man.

I see GAF has had one Satoshi Kon thread a while back. I imagine he's fairly well known among a certain type of fan.

But yeah, I get your sentiment.

So, Funimation put Claymore up on Hulu sometime recently so I decided to give it a watch now that I'm done with Full Metal Panic and, well, fuck is the dub terrible, I don't know if I can even watch it with such stupid voices, these people might as well be reading names from the phone book. I wonder if they have any openings, if this kind of work is acceptable, as I could always use some extra spending cash and it seems you can just phone in your work.

Damn. A bad dub to me is worse than a bad sub.

Kagari said:
And no, I can't stand Azumanga or Yotsuba. It doesn't help that weeaboos were really attached to the former several years ago and it really bugged me. I tried watching it and couldn't get into it at all... don't understand why it's so great. For the record though, I do agree with most of that GAF top 100 anime list from a while back sans Azumanga :P
For me, Azumanga doesn't get funny until episode 3 when the teachers start getting involved. After that it's good outside a couple Sakaki episodes.

The dub of #266 is all anyone needs. :D

Yeah, the teachers antics are the highlight of that series.

I need to get around to reading the manga. It's only three volumes have no idea why i haven't.

.

Agree with this. Always found her to be a bit of a dud character, but i kinda feel bad saying that because her character is exactly like my sister.:lol (barring the obsession about cats).

times a million

K-on on the other hand is only good as a manga because I've seen the anime

Yeah, it's four volumes or one omnibus volume. Yen Press released theirs recently. I wonder if it's a better translation than the old ADV one...

Well, after seeing Love Hina above KimiNozu I can't take that list seriously anymore.

102. Kimi ga nozomu eien 3 19
103. Koi Kaze 4 19

That's such a very strange coincidence. Because those are two "romance" anime's I've been meaning to see for years. I've already seen one of those two. So i might as well get the other one done.:lol

InfiniteNine said:

That's why the list is a great starting part for anyone interested in anime. Although it's far from comprehensive.

Most of the stuff you've listed just hasn't been seen by the casual fan, I'd imagine. Which is a shame, but there's not really that many people championing those titles.

InfiniteNine said:

I wouldn't put it over Lupin or Dirty Pair, but Love Hina's one of the very very few Harem shows I enjoyed. No magical girlfirend angle, you actually saw the relationship develop, they weren't in High School. Manga had a fun ending too.

Heat Guy J 3 : Man, the female characters faces in this show aren't great.

And they used the exact same shot of the CG market again. I think I'm going to flip out.

We have to be thankful for small miracles.
Now that K-on is out we need to do a new list anyway, hopefully Planetes can score a little higher on that one.

I'm kind of sensitive to music in shows, so even if Trapeze was bad, it would have carried my attention just by how the music was integrated into the end of each episode. When each patient had their little epiphany at the end and the strings from the ending song quickly roll up, it's pretty uplifting.

Another show that comes to mind with how well they used the ending theme music to punctuate the actual end-of-episode content is Kurau Phantom Memory. Each episode from what I remember ends on somewhat of a mellow, but suspenseful note. The way the ending song creeps in I thought was effective in nailing down that feeling. I know at least one other person on this forum likes it, since they use one of the first frames from this show's ending as their avatar.

I can link the songs, which are okay on their own, but it's not the same.

Ah, 2007. I guess I shouldn't be too disappointed in GAF that Aria is nowhere on that list. :lol

If I watch Aria, will you be satisfied? WILL YOU? :lol

Ah, the timely use of music within shows is certainly an underrated art. For example, the music is Mushishi if extremely important in setting the shows tone.

Strangely enough it's action shows like Gurren Lagann and Giant Robo that really grasp the power of their soundtracks. Utena as well. But that's mainly the big, sweeping themes to highlight some important battle.

Kaiji has a much more limited selection, but it was still put to good use.

Sometimes, you'll only think about a soundtrack because of it's absence. Eden of the East could really have done with a good composer, instead it sounds like elevator music half the time.

(Mentioning Kanno is cheating because the show she scores have such large soundtracks.)

Aria is soothing as. Liken it most to YKK. More atmosphere-type shows, though so...

Watanabe (Mac+, Bebop, Champloo and music director for Michiko) had the timing to music selection into specific scenes down to a bloody art.

That's why there's little need to mention them, as they operate at such a standard.

Well, you'll be satisfied because you've experienced the best anime ever! :lol

Of course, speaking of music, Aria is great because of how it incorporates the OP into every episode and uses the ED as part of the ending of an episode. It's also one of those shows where music plays throughout the episode to set mood and tone, pretty much subconsciously priming you to experience certain emotions on demand.

(Incidentally, I'm rewatching the series now, so this thread might become even more Aria heavy. :lol)

Bebop is great. AND it was popular in the west during anime's peak here, which is why it's so high on that list. They still air it on Adult Swim I guess? I randomly saw an episode a few weeks ago on there.

I know it's great I said it in that post you just quoted! I dont' really see it as a fitting #1, but I can understand the late night US watchers diet of whatever is on CN/TechTV/Anime Network on Demand. I just don't like how it is lauded king over everything else. They air it from time to time randomly just like they still occasionally show FLCL.

Aria 1 : Who the hell just wears sleeves? I mean, a sleeveless top I understand, but not the sleeves in themselves :lol

Also, wearing high heels on a gondola? That's the real science fiction!

It takes a few episodes for the show to hit its stride. It's really rolling by the end, though.
