how about deformed huge dinosaur type things

What a weird, non-sensical creature generation. You'd think they would have programmed something like: if bipedal, creature has claws instead of hoofs.

I still don't see how those statements indicate that it would be a multiplayer game. Yes, he says it might be possible to see other players, but every single time he keeps saying that the chances of it is extremely small, which indicates to me a high unlikelihood any player would ever see another person.

So I still don't understand why any person would have bought this game for some nebulous multiplayer component that they clearly downplayed every time it was brought up.

There have been evidence that the game does not send player location and movement data to the servers whatsoever. He implied/stated that you can see other players, but it doesn't happen and won't happen.

This gets posted every time, but here it is again.

Yep my UK copy has this sticker.

I'm also skeptical as to whether anyone has seen any creatures which remotely represent those in the pre-release images. Giant sand worms, huge dinosaur type things etc. All I've seen are deformed gazelles.

this is the closest I can find..

Or you know, he could have said no. There is no multiplayer component whatsoever.

They misled people, stop jumping to defend this. They should have clearly said no.

Well okay, I'll post this again.

Had the stickers on my limited edition as well.

Doesn't have to mean anything as far as online gameplay is concerned.

They wouldn't go through that trouble for the online icon; the sticker is due to a wrong age rating being printed on the box initially.

They probably misinformed PEGI initially regarding the content of the game and perhaps the nature of its online functionality, which was then amended to a 7 age rating. This time though, they misinformed PEGI about the online capabilities.

The icon is an easy way for publishers not to be held accountable for bad language being used in online lobbies etc. Given the fact that you can see other people's names for planets and animals, the logo should still be present on the box. After all, people's names for planets can contain foul language (with some workarounds).

The next print of the game will have an online icon reinstated.

Source: worked for PEGI.

Sony doesn't decide what the PEGI rates the game for. The rating on the PEGI site doesn't list online functionality either:

Actually, yes they do.

"Will you be able to play with your friends?" "Yes!"

C'mon. I totally understand things change in development - particularly in games of this scope - but there's really no way to spin this. They indicated there would be multiplayer of some sort several times, however limited or abstract.

Oh look, a bunch of people making something out of nothing.

It's not nothing though is it, it's a fairly unique situation for any game to be in, and worthy of discussion, I guess it's a bit of a shame the game in question is NMS though.

Surely in a world so large is it really that unusual that nobody's found certain species yet, when the game was only released a couple of days ago? Genuine question as I haven't been following the development of this game for very long.

Every planet has species. (I am pretty sure) So people have seen probably millions of species by now. And not one of them looks that different to each other in terms of size, or form. I'd say the chance of there being Sandworms + huge dinosaurs is close to 0. And they'd be idiotic to make such cool variations so rare practically no one sees them.

but how much chaff should one have to sift through before finding any wheat? seems to be the problem of this game; lots of bullshit to wade through for the (very slim if next to impossible?) chance of finding something interesting.

I've been following this for some days now and I don't understand why people are saying that playing with friends wasn't something advertised. The dude at the head of this whole game said it was a thing, but it's not and they never corrected that before release. It's really weird.

But...people have "met" each other. They were on the same planet at the same time. And...nothing.

Actually yes, it is nothing. At least the sticker bit.

Can you explain why it's nothing?, I asked the question earlier does this kind of thing happen often, and the answer was no, so surely something that doesn't happen often isn't nothing?

There is probably a very simple explanation, but you can't fault people for bringing something that doesn't happen very often up for discussion?

Oh look, a bunch of people making something out of nothing.

The sole fact that the sticker repointed PEGI 12 to PEGI 7 is an interesting bit of game development's inner secrets. I doubt anyone will care, but I wonder whether it was really a fault of HG's description of the thing, or was it a case of some sort of minor feature changes, not necessarily involving multiplayer.

I've seen velociraptors.

Not the same as a diplodocus but still cool.

And one guy was on NAT3 while the other was not. I still don't find this compelling evidence to make a final judgement on.

Although the lack of a real answer from Hello Games is interesting. Either they are dancing around the subject, or maybe multiplayer is a secret to be unlocked in the game. Or any other possibility.

How would multiplayer even be a secret to unlock? What benefit would it add?

It would certainly be interesting. The game is about exploration and discovery. This could be an incentive to do just that through any number of plot devices. That said, I also said "any other possibility" to make the point that it's just as likely, if not more, that they simply removed it or maybe never got to finish it.

Even six months ago I started to say to myself that there's so small a chance game will be good (by my standards) that I'll only ever buy it after a week's or so of good impressions.

I dodged a bullet as big as 70 euros and I can't express how happy I am.

No.

It's just not in the game. Hello Games won't respond to why but it's pretty obvious they just couldn't work it out in time. Very shady not to be upfront and honest about it though, and for going silent now.

Them and Sony are probably being silent because they may have bought their own PR about the chances of people meeting being tiny. In which case they probably thought they'd have longer than a day to try and bake in "MP". Never underestimate the internet though, or buy your own PR if you're bullshitting.

Usually, faulty initial ratings are revised for the second print, with the first print staying on store shelves with a faulty rating. This time however, they managed to lower the age rating just in time for release. Since that's an easy way to sell more copies, they decided to reprint all the standard copies and cover the already-made limited edition copies up with stickers.

It might even be part of why the game was delayed the final time.

I see. Alright. Then why cover the icon up? Seems very weird to do so if there was never any need.

See above. Having a 7 age rating instead of 12 sells more copies. The online icon is completely unrelated and would in no way be cause for a reprint or stickers.

Nope, no secrets. It's just a conversation between PEGI and Sony regarding the contents of the game. They decided against a 12 in the end, and Sony managed to convince them down to a 7. This takes fairly little effort in my experience, but Sony could get fined if anyone takes offense.

Again, regarding my post #60; the game should still have had the online icon due to people potentially using foul language in naming the planets.

Thanks for the explanation.

I can understand the marketing reasons for bringing the rating down from 12 to 7, but I wonder what technicalities or omissions they had to make to the game to be able to do it, or is it just simply a case of reducing the rating without actually changing anything?

In mechanical sense, none.

Imagine however the mess that would happen if the game was actively advertised as single player and a week later people realized that post-finishing you can haunt the realms of other players or something. Some post-launch presence in the media would be guaranteed.

To go from that to not even being able to see anyone else at all...what happened?

Development, I'd imagine. I don't think Hello Games are liars, I think that this game's hype spiraled far out of their control and they did not get out ahead of the release and clarify older statements fast enough.

I speculate that they either forgot they had even said this stuff to the press (quite likely, given how hectic the development of this game must have been with such a small team handling everything), or they were terrified of pre-release backlash if they "canceled" multiplayer and just sort of... never said anything.

And one guy was on NAT3 while the other was not. I still don't find this compelling evidence to make a final judgement on.

They fixed that yesterday. They both were on NAT2 and fully connected and still could not see each other. Go look in the other NMS thread for more info.

The 12 age rating is for mild violence against human-like and animal creatures.

The 3 age rating is for violence against fantasy creatures or cartoon characters.

Given the fact that all of NMS' creatures are fully fantasy creatures, a 3 age rating would have sufficed. However, the game contains content that may be frightening to young children, so they bumped it to 7, which is what that age rating is for.

The initial 12 was most likely due to the alien creatures being categorised as creatures that could be recognised as animals. They probably countered that by saying that none of the creatures exist in real life, making it fully fantasy = 3 age rating.

Making changes to appease ratings is nothing new, and happens all the time. In this case though, I think no changes had to be made.

No, you don't understand. They LIED to us!!! On purpose! We should sue!

I'm sure there are quite a few planets that hasn't been explored yet though...

If they are so rare that with the combined efforts of hundreds of thousands (at least, could be millions) of players not one sighting has been confirmed, then they made them way, way too rare. That would mean that the vast majority of players (>99.999%) would never come across a single one.

And I find that highly doubtful.

The thing that doesn't seem to be possible is specifically the size. Huge creature sightings are at 0, yes? (despite advertisement showcasing them prominently)

Follow Earth's species evolution.

How many huge animals there are and how many mid/small sized?

Now think about the gazillion planets there are in the game.

Thanks for that, if nothing else, I've learnt something new today!

i agree with you 100%...he says extremely rare and all of sudden he lies... which makes it seem like they are expecting multiplayer lobbies, etc... now mind you the he lies started on the 2nd day after release... so how in the hell extremely rare translate into oh my god wheres the multiplayer... less than 24 hrs after release. i bought the game not even thinking about multiplayer. why would I? extremely rare means like hardly fucking ever.

I'm not sure what exactly you are trying to say. (the game is quite specifically not set on earth) And see my above answer about the rarity.

So, since they covered an icon that happens to be in other singleplayer games, now we're discussing darwinistic evolutionary parameters of fantasy worlds?

This has to be the new low in these threads.

That said, Hello Games should and could have been more open about this, as they did with other features.

And by the way, if you want to point your finger at someone, that should be Sony. They publish and market the game, it's their fault.

Pretty sure:

1) This opens the door for legal action
2) This will be the end of Hello Games

Not sure why some people are defending the devs. I have not seen a clusterfuck of this magnitude since maybe Driveclub.
