Ask me which Shakespeare novel is best

The Twilight Samurai, The Hidden Blade, and Love and Honour are some of my favourite films. They're what Yamada is best known for, and, in my opinion, are on par with other great Samurai based movies like Seven Samurai, and Zatoichi.
It's rare that I meet a person in real life who has actually watched them though, so I thought I'd make my first thread a place for fellow fans to discuss them.

In your opinion, how would you rank them?
Love and Honour doesn't seem as well known as the other two, but it's my personal fave. Each film is loosely based on the Samurai's code and finding true love, and I thought Love and Honour handled a mature subject very well. That, and the main character, Mimura Shinnojo, shows a lot more emotion than the Twilight Samurai's and The Hidden Blade's leads, acting in a very human like manner when he becomes blind and finds out about his wife's "affair". I dunno, while I did like Seibei and Katagiri, I found them to be too familiar to many Samurai protagonists (stoic, harsh past, kind), but Shinnojo had that dark streak in him, which made for a more interesting character. It also had the best "final battle", but Katagiri vs Hazama comes close.

I do love all 3 though, and I couldn't decide between Twilight and The Hidden Blade if ya asked me.
Surely there's other people on GAF who love these movies?

Well, I don't have a damn clue what you're talking about but you've made me curious so I'm gonna go right now and look those movies up, see how can I watch them and report back. For no particular reason.

Or maybe there is one. Didn't Zwick's The Last Samurai rip some of these off? Or am I making this up?

Hmm, there's not one sole thing I could say The Last Samurai ripped off from Yamada's trilogy, as a lot of Samurai films have many things in common. The Last Samurai is basically a classic Samurai movie for the hollywood audience, which isn't a bad thing mind you. Defo doesn't deserve the hate it gets, but this is getting off topic :P

But yeah, check the trilogy out if your into the Samurai. All three are really sweet tales, both romantically and epically.

Already coming my way. Will report back to either thank you or to whine at you.

Yay! Movie night!

I feel ashamed that I have never seen seven samurai before......it's on my list of movies I want to see before I die, but I think I should just go ahead and make it the next thing I rent.

Is it on anything like itunes, psn, or amazon vod? Are there English subtitles?

Is it an action movie? A drama? Or a mixture of the two?

Mixture but mostly drama to a large extent.. Put away a lot of time to watch it but at the end you'll be glad you did.

The Twilight Samurai is one of my favorite films ever. It is just such a beautiful film and brings out such fantastic emotions.

I really must get around to watching the other two.

Yeah, but it tends to pass by relatively quickly.

Some the most heartfelt Samurai movies I have ever seen. Love and Honor is my favorite from the three. I need to rewatch it.

As for Yamada's samurai trilogy, I couldn't divide them. But I think if you ask many people they will say that Twilight Samurai is what they are most fond of. It probably helps that you've got Sanada playing the lead.

As much as I like Twilight Samurai I wouldn't put it in the same category as Seven Samurai - Seven Samurai is one of the greatest films ever and stretches well beyond its genre. I think Twilight is about the same caliber as the Musashi trilogy (which is a complement because they're fantastic films).
