As someone who's played PBR at E3, and who is currently in the beta, and who is a huge Smash Bros fan, I can tell you that PBR is NOTHING like Smash Bros.

I love them both, and because they are both different. The similarities end at

1) Mascot brawler with up to 4 players
2) A relatively light-hearted, colorful visual aesthetic.

The combat systems of both are very, very different, and feel incredibly different once you spend more than a few minutes with the game.

There's no reason to get butthurt over it. Smash is awesome. So is PBR. Some people will prefer one, some will prefer the other, some will prefer both. I like both, but I'm basing my opinion on PBR off of an incomplete beta that I've been playing once a day for the past 10 days.

What are you basing your opinion of PBR on? Some videos? A few screenshots?

Trust me, after actually playing the game, watching game play videos of the game in action make a lot more sense to me. I can see what the players are trying to accomplish; the set ups, the combos, the AP/Super strategies. It's much more compelling to watch a match now that I have the context for it from my own experiences.

I say give the game a chance first, and for more than just a few matches. You will probably be surprised at how much it differs from Smash, and that doesn't make it bad either.

If it was a 1:1 copy, people will bitch. If it's not a 1:1 copy, people will bitch. It's a tough position SuperBot and Sony are in producing this game, but fortunately, the game speaks for itself to those who have given it a hands on play.

You know the game could be something else right? Like a 3D fighter, one-on-one, 4 player co-op adventure and so on. It's not like making it look exactly like Smash was their only choice.

But I don't see why is so morally objectionable specially because Smash is not the first Mascot Fighter

I actually kinda wish it was MORE of a "ripoff" seeing as I still don't like the kill system in it. I'm a huge Nintendo fan and I don't mind Sony borrowing the idea to use with their characters since I do find a good amount of Sony characters to be pretty cool. Plus it'll help fill the void of the long wait to Smash U/3D. :P

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Watching trailers and gameplay do nothing to inform you about the game beyond the most superficial of it's features/functions.

How many trailers or game play videos of a game have looked amazing, only to have the actual game be weak sauce? How many were the opposite?

An example for me would be the first Demon's Souls game play trailer. I remember watching that and thinking, "Fuck, that looks boring and slow as shit. Poor animations and stiff looking controls." I was ready to write the game off. Then, after hearing about what people (that weren't paid game journalists) were saying about the game and it's atmosphere and game play, I took a chance, bought the import version (it was on sale for $46, as opposed to the usual $60 or more for imports here), and took it home and gave it a shot. Holy crap, playing it and watching it were two totally different experiences. I absolutely LOVE Demon's Souls, and it is one of my favorite games of this generation.

If I had simply went with my non-gameplay experience impressions of the game, I'd have missed out on a fantastic game, and it's spiritual successor, Dark Souls (which I also love). Now, watching Demon's Souls game play, I no longer see it as slow and boring, because I now understand the game play mechanics behind what I'm seeing, since I've spent some time with the game and understand it better.

Same applies to PBR. PLAY the game. Get educated about it's particulars from first hand experience, not GAF consensus or even my own impressions, THEN make up your mind about if it's a rip off, or if it's your type of game.

Writing it off from a few game play videos just seems kind of immature to me. I personally like to at least give something a hands on shot before I say, "Ok, that's not for me."

Especially if, as being a fan of Smash Bros, I'd imagine that genre of game holds interest for you. It doesn't have to be Nintendo branded to be good, you know.

I just experienced Power Stone for the first time this year, as I bought it for my Vita, and it's a fun game and I really like it, but after playing PBR, I'm glad it's not like Power Stone. I prefer the approach they've taken by making it a 2D brawler in the same vein as Smash.

EDIT: @Travis, I touched on it above, but I'm glad it's not a 3D fighter. I'm not actually the biggest fan of 3D fighters, and I think the 2D approach is a lot more approachable to non-fighter heavy fans than 3D. There is less you have to worry about when you take depth and lateral movement out of the equation. Smash is accessible because of it's presentation, and it's simple combat system. PBR is the same way, but there is enough depth there to intrigue more hardcore fighter fans as well. I'm sure Smash players feel the same about Smash (I'm not a competitive Smash player, so I don't know how they feel about it, but I just played with friends back in the day).

Might as well argue it's a Sega Saturn exclusive if you're going to be that insane.

That's not to say the game will be bad, or makes Sony evil or something silly.

It's a ripoff of SSB, but that's what you would want surely. SSB is the best in the genre.

I don't own a nintendo console anymore and 1 game I miss is SSB, now Sony are coming out with their own version I can't help but get excited.

I actually think the green/red/blue missiles are good, it's terrible to go against established colour coding when you enter an existing genre where people expect things to work a certain way. Just being different for the sake of being different isn't helpful and will probably confuse people.

I would keep your expectations in check.

Sure, aesthetically, they appear to be very similar: colorful mascot brawler, but the game play is very, VERY different.

I also expected it to play like Smash. It. Does. Not.. Initially, when you are first booting up the game, and in control of a character, and you start playing around with the attacks and what the buttons do, you're like, "Oh, yeah, this is totally like Smash! I got this!" Then, you start to try and play the game like Smash, and suddenly you aren't doing so well.

It's a bit of an oversimplification to say that your goal is to build AP to execute a Super, but then again, that's what makes games like this so fun, the goal is painfully, obviously clear to you. In Smash, your goal is to attack your opponent to build up their percentage meter so you can smash them out of the ring. Devilishly simple. But the HOW is where things get complicated. Other players have their own tactics and strategies. Characters have their own sets of moves and counters. It's a back and forth.

When a PBR match starts, yes, you are trying to hit that guy and build super. You get a Kill, you get 2 points. Great! But then, another player kills you! Crap, now you're down to 1 point, because each death subtracts 1 from your score. Dammit! He got another kill! Now he's up by 3 points, and you are still trying to recover from that death. But there are two other players in the match all trying to do the same thing.

It's no less chaotic in FFA in PBR as it is in SSB. That back and forth, ebb and flow, attacking, countering, executing supers, dodging supers, is just as exhilarating here as it is in SSB. The middle game is where it tends to get really exciting, when each player has gotten a few kills and deaths under their belt. It then becomes a matter of diminishing the leader's kills by killing them, while keeping your own kills untouched.

It's fun. And very different than Smash. I enjoy that both have a very different meta game in place, and both are very fun.

I know my posts will go ignored, but they are here for anyone wanting to bother to read an informed opinion about the game. And not just an informed opinion by a PlayStation fan (which I am, no doubt), but by a Smash Bros fan as well.

1 on 1 fights are where PS All-Stars will *look* obviously different from Smash I think.

Both games have a hectic FFA so it's hard to see much into it, especially if you don't really understand what PS All-Stars is doing.

Well that sounds very promising indeed. I like that it plays differently than Smash and isn't an exact copy when it comes to gameplay but still maintains the fun, haven't followed the game too much or seen many impressions but that sound great.

I don't mean it like that, if it plays completely different that Smash Bros. I wouldn't have a problem as long as it's fun to play. What I meant was I'm glad Sony have a 4 player local beatem up where you can select from a variety of different playstation characters.
