did i read this correctly? a korean bbq meetup in LA? I ... I might just make the drive. I found a good place near me that I enjoy, but it's nothing like the places I ate it in Hawaii. If LA-GAF can convince me of a good place there.. I'm down to meet up with you. I'm in.

Well if Korea Town isn't good enough for you then you might as well wait for a Korea-GAF meetup.

What part of L.A. did you find so bad?

I've been in West LA, North LA, live in East LA and love it, and I've personally walked through about 30 streets of South Central L.A and enjoyed meeting the people that live in it.

I love this city. What you went through musta been random.

Well it's a Saturday so up to you if you want to make the drive for most us it will probably be 20-30 minutes but traffic should be light on the weekend for you anyway.

I mentally assume everyone that calls la a cesspool and all other insults somehow arrived during the rodney king riots. I for the life of me can't figure out where all the hate comes from.

And with that, I'm sobering up, so I think I need to make another drink...

Since we are on the subject of LA. LAX is the filthiest and most ghetto airport I have ever been to. It's so bad that this is how most people are "welcomed" to southern California.

. . really? I've been to much grosser. I mean, it's huge and packed constantly and terribly laid out and a bitch to get to if you don't plan ahead and the people in it can be disgusting, but that aside (heh) it wouldn't enter my mind as the filthiest.

Now if you walk down to that taco bell or mcdonalds and just sit and wait an hour you'll come with stories you wish you didn't.

EDIT:

I will never get enough of this.

LAX is the worst major airport I've been to for certain. The worst overall was Newark.

Bob Hope or John Wayne are the ways to go.

Having been to several major airports in the USA I can confirm this as well, Austin, Dallas, Denver, San Francisco, etc all so much better.

When I landed at Newark though I thought LAX wasn't as bad in comparison LOL. Unfortunately not much can be done because it is such a major airport it's not like they can build a new one next door since all the land has been developed and closing one terminal for updates would cause a mess.

Let's be honest, LA is a shit hole with small pockets of decent city life. If you want a good experience in LA, you basically have to stick to your box: never go east of the 405, never go north of the 101.

Problem is that box is the most expensive and most crowded part of the city. There's a reason you never meet LA natives: they were smart enough to get the hell out when they had the chance.

Absolutely agree.

On one hand, I would say it's all perspective but I've been all over and I really don't get the hate.

It's got its ghetto parts, but with 9-10 million people you're going to have all sorts.

West LA, Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Los Feliz, a small part of downtown, Silver Lake, Little Tokyo, Glendale, Burbank, Pasadena, West Hollywood, La Brea, Studio City and Santa Monica are all great areas. Just as with any place, there are good areas and bad. I think the immediacy of how quickly LA can go from beautiful to grungy is what throws many off.

I dunno. I grew up in Orange County and when I think L.A. I think of extreme poverty, graffiti everywhere, gang bloodbaths, and homeless people scattered everywhere. LA is like New York was in the 70s.

Pretty much. Just in Pasadena alone you have super nice areas, Old Town, etc. Then you go north up Altadena past the 210...

1) Graffiti is cool

2) homeless people scattered everywhere/extreme poverty really only applies to the area of downtown immediately surrounding skid row.

3) gang bloodbaths? I've worked and hung out in Compton which is supposedly one of the worst areas for that kind of activity and didn't once feel unsafe. Yes, there's gang activity, but it's not 1992 any more.

There's a good amount of homeless people in every city over 2 million people. New York is just as bad and hell Orlando always felt worse.

Whooo-hooo! There are a couple of cats that live right around the block from me posting in here. It's kind of weird.

Parents were nomads, and I just sort of carried on the tradition. It's been fun, and I feel I have a pretty interesting overview on how the US works, but I've found the place I want to call home. NorCal or maybe Portland for vacations (TREES MAN) but that's about it.

That's cool I'm kind of sad I haven't seen as much of the country as I would like to.

Only been to NYC, Colorado, Chicago, SF and Las Vegas (but for someone from LA that doesn't count since half the temporary population of LV is from LA).

One day after I save enough money I will roam the country for a bit.
